Fleetway Sonic vs Kasen Ibaraki [2024] (Fleetway Publications & SEGA vs Touhou Project)

(Edits by Twice!)

Sonic the Hedgehog, the Freedom Fighter and Hero of Mobius from Fleetway Publications’ Sonic the Comic!

Kasen Ibaraki, the Wild and Horned self proclaimed “Hermit” Sage of the Touhou Project!

While these two monoliths of East and West may seem to be as far removed from one another as conceivably possible, these nature loving heroes have more in common than one would ever think. Within these two lie demons of incredible malice that they fight to stop on the regular, these struggles going on to define how they live their lives, pervade their entire stories, and hang over them like their own deaths! But despite it all, they face these parts of themselves head on and with full confidence, and try their damndest to help bring about a better tomorrow.

A lot has changed since the last go around in 2022, so why not stick around and give this behemoth of a blog a go over? It’s twice as long and even more comprehensive, and should deliver the true, final decision on who would win… in a DEATH BATTLE!

Preliminary Info:

(Because things just cant ever be simple, can they, eh?)

It's finally happening yet again! After over a full year and a change, it’s time for the revisit you’ve all been waiting for, Fleetway Sonic vs Kasen Ibaraki! As you’ll all remember, I’ve done this blog before, however, last time was a bit more limited in the scope of what was researched! I hadn’t covered as much ground in Touhou as I have now, and I only used the original STC Continuity for the blog, as I had a bit of a short timeframe to make the blog, and I wanted to cover the main canon of both characters specifically. However, while researching Sonic, I found out that Fleetway has a lot of arguable secondary media, and upon asking you all if you’d be interested in me covering it, it was pretty overwhelmingly a yes!

After Kasen vs Sonic made it to the Death Battle Season 10 Tournament of Champions, interest in the match only grew further, which was my ultimate motivator for getting back to progress on this blog! I’ll be using a lot more media for Fleetway Sonic this time, so I’ll give a quick rundown on what’s being used as secondary canon for the Hedgehog, as he’s where most of the new content has come from!

What’s new to be covered? Well:

  • Sonic 1 and 2 on Genesis are going to be considered for research, as both are considered canon to Fleetway. Stay Sonic also makes mention of Sonic 2 Master System, so it may be viable too.

  • Any new findings from the original 184 Issues of Sonic the Comic, and its specials.

    • While there’s 223 issues of STC, issues 185-223 were just reprints of all prior issues, 184 was the final issue to have a new storyline.

  • Any interviews or statements from the main writer of STC Nigel Kitching from various websites and the old STC Yahoo Group

  • Stay Sonic, The Penguin Books book under the Fantail imprint, which serves as the basis for what Fleetway Sonic would be built from.

  • The four Virgin Book Novels, which would use Stay Sonic as a basis and are very adjacent with early Fleetway’s story and lore. Those being:

    • Sonic the Hedgehog in Robotnik's Laboratory

    • Sonic the Hedgehog in the Fourth Dimension

    • Sonic the Hedgehog and the Silicon Warriors

    • Sonic the Hedgehog in Castle Robotnik

  • All of Sonic the Comic Online, the fan continuation of STC that’s currently released, which includes:

    • Issues 224 to 279

    • The Exit: Sonic special

    • Sonic the Comic Online Poster Mag 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007

    • All the specials including the Halloween, Christmas, and the 15th Anniversary specials

    • Special Sonic the Comic Con Issue 2

Why is this blog including Sonic the Comic Online despite it being a fan product? Well, for one, it’s been officially endorsed as a continuation of STC by the original writers and artists and is generally appreciated by them, to the point they worked on a special to conclude the plot of STCO on their own terms (Exit: Sonic), and SEGA themselves even printed an issue of it in the Summer Sonic event.

Now, on Kasen’s front, there isn’t really anything particularly different I’ll be using here, it’ll just be more findings in regards to Touhou’s feats, scaling, and cosmology as I’ve had more time to pinpoint the verse and where it lands! I’ve had a lot of calculations done for Touhou (and STC!), so a lot of new info should be covered!

Also to note, later on in the blog when discussing specific abilities or feats, if I’m covering something that’s exclusively from STCO, the Games, or the Novels, I’ll be sure to note it in brackets like this: [STCO] / [Novels] / [Game] so it’ll be clear that the feat I’m talking about isn’t from original canon.

Also if you notice any descriptions that are near identical to how they are in VSBW, it's because I probably wrote that description and/or helped Fuji put it there in the first place, and I have NO problem stealing my own work!!! (:

I also have no problem with Kirb stealing my work.

-Mad Dog of Fujiwara (real)

I also will be experimenting a bit in terms of how I classify stats in this blog, so if you see any strange terminology, just reference this document.

ALSO for fun, if you’d like to research these two yourself, I included media guides for both, one for Sonic which basically just covers everything, and one for Kasen which gives you the most immediately necessary and relevant info.

Backgrounds:

Sonic the Hedgehog (El Fleetway Edition):

(Edit by Twice!)
(This story description will largely cover new information from STCO! If you want to see a breakdown of Fleetway Sonic’s background covering the entire original comic, check my breakdown in the original blog)

“What a life! Never a dull moment... And that's the way I like it!

After defeating Chaos, re-merging with Super Sonic, and finally avenging Johnny Lightfoot’s death, Sonic continued what he’s always done, being a hero. But what Sonic would find after finally dethroning Robotnik was a world he wasn’t fully prepared for. Sonic would find himself faced with all manner of new threats, ghosts from the past in the appearance of Shadow working together with Doctor Zachary to cause the destruction of the Special Zone, and attempt to destroy Earth, the streets becoming overrun with gang wars, participating in two sisters’ Universe Game for the fate of his reality, and a wild court case with the Order of Magick featuring Blaze the Cat and a world ending time loop.

But the biggest and most shocking difficulty Sonic would ever run into… would be the media itself. Robotnik’s loyal ex-henchman, Grimer, began leaking secretive information gained from spying into the Kintobor Computer’s systems to the Kane Broadcasting Station, with KBS beginning to air constant smear campaigns, documentaries which painted Sonic out to be just as big a villain as Robotnik, and reporting on situations to make Sonic look in as bad a light as possible, until he was finally framed for an attack on Emerald Hill Zone, and a Metallix doppelganger attacked Sonic’s friends while disguised as him, making him out to be a true villain.

Despite being innocent, and despite being the Hero and Savior of Mobius, Sonic would find himself being hated by nearly all, and trusted by few. His heroics were no longer appreciated, and his friends no longer trusted him, leaving Sonic fighting for a cause that didn’t support him. For a brief while, Sonic’s resolve even wavered, with him considering leaving his home altogether, leaving for another dimension, where he could escape the hell his life had become, almost giving in to the mounting pressure. But upon learning of the return of Robotnik, funded by the Drakkon Empire (something he was technically responsible for), he strengthened his resolve, realizing he still had a purpose, a cause to fight for, whether people wanted him to do so or not, and stuck with Mobius, beginning to fight against Robotnik and his forces again, but on his own, doing what he thinks is right.

The only person that stood by his side was his little buddy Tails, who still believed in him, but Sonic, realizing that Mobius had lost it's hero in Sonic, begins to egg Tails on to become the true hero that Mobius needs in its time of need, being the final push Tails needed to become a true hero, and the temporary leader of the Freedom Fighters in his absence, leading the fight for freedom against the mad dictator, becoming the symbol of hope that Mobius needed… while Sonic would do what he could in the shadows.

In the meantime, Sonic would still struggle and do what he could, while constantly on the run from the authorities, the media, and even civilians angry at what they believed he had done, leaving him constantly exhausted and on the brink. This would result in catastrophe when he’d be captured, and his captors would try to forcefully turn him into Super Sonic and control him, trying to make him a dog that would follow whatever orders they wished… until Super Sonic broke out, and began his plan to cause mayhem yet again. In an alternate future, right here and now, Sonic would become the “Iblis”, going on to destroy the world and kill everyone on it, but with the inter-time intervention of Silver the Hedgehog, and all of Sonic’s friends working together, Super Sonic would be cast out of Sonic once again, freeing him from the demon for a time.

Now freed of Super Sonic, Sonic would be able to meet the rest of the Freedom Fighters in a major battle against Robotnik, helping to turn the tides in the war and defeat the Doctor, and then help stop the Drakkon’s attempted takeover of Earth, finally able to harness Chaos Energy in a positive way for the first time, becoming Hyper Sonic, as just him, just Sonic, and then destroying the Drakkon fleets and restoring peace to Mobius, and then proving his innocence to the public, and having his status as a hero restored, his tireless work and fighting for peace finally paying off.

Years into the future, well after many, many more adventures we’ve yet to see, Sonic has finally begun to get old, alongside all his friends, Amy even getting married to Tekno! In their older age, they finally want to find a way to possibly bring an end to their conflicts for good. In order to help Porker better understand Chaos Energy, to finally control it in a positive way, he began to undergo excruciating forms of Chaos Dialysis to help further the research, making him extremely ill in the process.

At this crucial time, he would come face to face with a sudden appearance from Robotnik… and Super Sonic. In their final encounter, Porker would use the knowledge he gained from studying Chaos Energy to align Sonic and Super Sonic’s quantum frequencies, finally merging them together, restoring Sonic to full health, and resulting in Super Sonic finally disappearing, his malevolent, evil personality gone from Sonic, returning him to normal… alongside Kintobor! With peace on Mobius finally restored, Sonic is able to live out the rest of his days happily, with his oldest friend Kintobar finally back, and the world he fought so long to protect finally safe. His fight for Freedom finally, truly, has come to an end.

Kasen Ibaraki:

(Edit by Twice!)

“My ideals exist alongside the laws of heaven!”

Hundreds of years in the past, there lived an incredibly fearsome and powerful oni, known as Ibaraki-Douji. One of the Big Four of the Mountain, alongside Suika Ibuki, Yuugi Hoshiguma, and another unknown member, she was one of the most powerful and respected Youkai of all, operating their base within Mt. Ooe. At some point, they would break into a rampage onto Kyoto, causing mass havoc. However, at some point during this rampage, Ibaraki-Douji would be fought off by a powerful warrior weiling the Onikirimaru, a powerful youkai blade capable of sealing away even the most resilient youkai. Using this blade, the warrior would sever her right arm, sealing all her malice and hatred within the arm, before taking the arm as a trophy and sealing it away within a protective box.

The Oni once known as Ibaraki-Douji, after losing all her malice, would find herself rapidly losing interest in the hellish reality she remains within, and would decide to pursue another world, a better world. She would disguise her Oni heritage and her previous life as a Deva, adopting the lifestyle and appearance of a Hermit, in order to pursue the path to Heaven, and in doing so, would take upon her new name, Kasen Ibaraki. With all of her malice removed, she would end up becoming an incredibly compassionate, and emotionally vulnerable person, who’d try to help others wherever given the opportunity while following her path as a Hermit. During the path she followed in her new self-created life, she would find herself becoming acquaintances with Yukari Yakumo and Okina Matara, a powerful Gap Youkai and God respectively, forming the group known as the Sages of Gensokyo. Together alongside them and the great Dragon God, would create the realm known as Gensokyo, a land of fantasy, and paradise for all who come to find it, whether they be Youkai, Gods, humans, animals, forgotten beings or those who were never accepted elsewhere. The land became sealed off from the outside world in 1885 A.D.

Kasen would continue her hermit lifestyle within Gensokyo, hiding her life as an Oni and even her position as a Sage of Gensokyo from all within, eventually becoming known as a “mountain hermit” at some point in 1980. All the while, she would occasionally leave Gensokyo for the Outside World in search of her severed arm, as Kasen was well aware of the power and malice withheld within the arm, and she knew that one day, the seal would weaken enough for her other half to escape, and wreak havoc upon the world. Eventually, after centuries, she would finally find the box her arm was sealed with, up for display at a run down old temple, its seal already immensely weakened. Realizing the gravity of this situation, and after failing to reseal the arm herself, Kasen realized she would need to enlist the help of a sealing specialist.

This would lead her to the shrine of Reimu Hakurei, Gensokyo’s primary incident resolver, youkai exterminator, shrine maiden, and most importantly, sealing specialist. Knowing that just dropping such a task on Reimu would only cause trouble and expose her true nature as an Oni to all of Gensokyo, she would instead aim to befriend Reimu, and slowly overtime, train her in whatever ways possible, so she would be ready to confront Ibaraki-Douji’s arm and reseal it when the day would come.

After several years, many more incidents, almost accidentally causing the destruction of Gensokyo, and a lot of Kasen trying her damndest to guide Reimu down the right path to be fully prepared, the day would finally come. Reimu would discover Ibaraki-Douji’s Arm, and after fighting with it for a short time, would have her soul separated from her body and sent to Avici to be trapped for eternity. However, anticipating this, the real Kasen would also send Reimu’s body with her soul to Avici, to allow her to escape what would have otherwise been an inescapable prison, and to confront Ibaraki-Doujin’s Arm. After a brief fight with the arm, Kasen herself makes her way into Avici, fusing with her missing right arm, becoming a full Oni yet again.

After doing this, she tosses a piece of food to Reimu, so she wont fight on an empty stomach and can put up a true fight. What Ibaraki-Douji doesn’t know is that hidden within the food, was a fragment of the Onikirimaru blade, the only thing that could seal her. With her body in turmoil with itself, and with Reimu having everything she needed to finally remove Ibaraki-Douji from Kasen’s body, she battles with the Oni yet again, finally sealing the arm away again for good.

After recovering from the ordeal, obtaining her sealed arm, and bringing it home with her, to keep it as a constant reminder of her past, of who she used to be, and who she must never, ever return to being. After Kasen takes some time off to herself and reflects about things, she eventually comes to the decision that she’ll continue living the life she created for herself in Gensokyo, following her chosen path as a hermit to eventually reach heaven, and to continue acting as a mentor to Reimu, keeping her and her shrine on the right path, because in her own words, “and if I don’t do it, who else will?!”

Intelligence, Experience & Skill:

Sonic:

Intelligence wise, Sonic isn’t a slouch, even if it's not his area of expertise. Sonic has about half the IQ of Kintobar, and considering that Kintobar had an IQ of 268 at the Age of 4, Sonic would at minimum have an IQ of 134 [Novels]. He’s rather perceptive, able to figure out that Brutus was programmed to think and act like Robotnik after a single brief encounter with him, and was able to pick up on bits of information and understand theories of physics by watching Kintobar [Novels]

He’s skilled enough to drive a tank and even (somehow) pull off a bootlegger's reverse in it, he was smart enough to know how to manually rapidly operate the Death Egg’s controls to make it crash into the ocean rather than Green Hill Zone.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about Sonic, is he’s actually a rather good strategist, having a shockingly tactical mind! He was the leader of the Freedom Fighters and their fight against Robotnik’s dictatorship for most of the comic’s run, and is often is the one who would come up with many of the Freedom Fighters’ plans, such as planning ambushes and baiting his opponents, or using the specific abilities of his teammates to work together to overcome a foe they couldn’t on their own. He was able to remember the exact layouts of the tunnels of Miracle Planet several months after he was there and use them to give himself an advantage when raiding the enemy. He was even able to recognize when things seemed weird, and was able to intuit that Robotnik was trying to track him, and instead of heading back to base, waited at a remote location for his forces to arrive.

Within combat, Sonic’s a master of on the fly thinking. He’s regularly able to battle with large groups of enemies, is able to utilize his enemies firepower, as well as their own stupidity against them, is able to quickly utilize the weaknesses of his opponents to dispatch them as quickly as possible even when in disadvantageous situations, or using robotic remains alongside the environment to his advantage. He’s also remarkably skilled, able to pick up and use weapons near masterfully even with no prior experience.

Super Sonic is significantly less so. While he was initially a complete berserker, acting with intent to destroy and destroy only, after absorbing the energy of the Complete Chaos Emeralds to become stronger, and after spending a long time within Sonic, learning and failing to wreak havoc on his own, he began to become more patient, eventually becoming able to formulate plans, learn from his mistakes and take advantage of those who may try to control him, and exploit those around him to grow even more powerful, and learn new techniques [STCO]. Super Sonic does still markedly struggle with much in terms of tactics though, especially with his overbearing cockiness and sadism, and as such, his own personality results in him not really relying on this side of himself much.

Kasen Ibaraki:

Kasen’s also incredibly smart. She’s stated that she’s able to remember every single event of her life, from the moment of her birth, which would encompass over a thousand years of knowledge, giving her some insane memory. She’s spent her time as a hermit undergoing constant training and meditation, as skipping out on her training could cause her body to crumble away; This would give her hundreds of years of training under her belt. Her centuries of living have given her a treasure trove’s worth of worldly knowledge, ranging from vengeful spirits and the metals they produce, tube foxes, various magical items, obscure medicinal herbs, or the nature of youkai. Like any oni worth her salt, she also knows a great deal about sake. She was able to understand Sumireko Usami’s incredibly confusing dream self astral projection predicament, as well as the logically paradoxical nature of the Occult Balls, to the point of being the very first person to understand them and the danger they posed in full.

Kasen’s also regularly showcased as one of the more intelligent individuals within Gensokyo. She was able to intuit the Moriya Shrine’s plans behind an artificial dam just by noticing small discrepancies in their story, doing her own research on the subject to further supplement her knowledge. Similarly, her research has also led to her finding out the true origin of Tori-no-Ichi, letting her (mostly) prevent a wildfire before it spread out of control. She was able to outsmart Mamizou Futatsuiwa, the leader of the Tanuki, a band of certified scheming tricksters, in their own game, making her lose a drinking contest by exploiting their hubris and their own weaknesses. She’s shown similar craftiness with close friends as well, goading Reimu into losing under the guise of hyping her up specifically so she could win a bet. She’s most notably outsmarted herself, hiding the fragment of the blade Onikirimaru away so that it could later be used as a trump card against herself, all without her alter ego finding out, showing excellent skills in planning ahead of time.

It also goes without saying that being able to hide her identity as an oni for so many centuries requires a great deal of intelligence in order to keep up such a deception for so long (especially when her last name is literally Ibaraki, which isn’t very subtle).

In terms of combat skill, Kasen is leagues above fodder fairies, who train by dodging natural snowy weather. She’d also compare to other youkai, who can roll dice so precisely that they can perfectly duplicate a previous roll’s angle, force, rotation, and result.

Arsenal & Familiars:

Sonic:

Power Sneakers:

Sonic’s iconic red and white striped sneakers, which are specially created to reduce friction while running, to prevent his shoes from wearing out and to allow him to run at top speeds with little resistance. Initially gifted to him by Dr. Ivo Kintobor, they were what allowed him to reach the speed of sound the first time.

After the events of Fourth Dimension, the Time Cops would upgrade Sonic’s sneakers to include automatic odor removers and a self cleaning system, which is cool I guess [Novels].

Hair Comb:

The most important piece of equipment of them all, Sonic carries a hair comb on him in the event his totally radical spikes should get ruffled in any way (Sonic branding notwithstanding). [Novels]

Game Gear:

As a certified SEGA Gamer, Sonic has his own Game Gear that he loves to play in his spare time. Probably seething at Sonic 2 Game Gear with that ridiculous fucking screen crunch.

Mobius Rings:

The rings of Mobius have a variety of effects. Their collection can allow the user to be protected from Chaos Energy, and also gives them increased durability / protection to oncoming enemy attacks, and Sonic even theorizes that enough of them could drain the Chaos Energy from an individual, and they’re also capable of “flowing good karma” in order to stabilize large quantities of evil [Novels]. They’re even able to, somehow, absorb the brainwaves of an individual, allowing for the storage of a perfect copy of their consciousness. Most notably however, is that they can be used to transport dimensions with a surplus of ring energy, such as when Sonic used them to travel into the Special Zone.

Sonic and Tails collectively stockpiled about 884 of them during the events of the novel Silicon Warriors [Novels] and have likely only collected more.

Underwater Suit:

When purely underwater combat is required, Sonic’s prepared with an underwater exosuit, which allows him to obviously stay underwater for extensive periods of time due to its oxygenation. It was also devised to give him complete underwater mobility, allowing him to travel underwater at high speeds and use all of his special attacks underwater, including the spin attack or blast attack. It’s also notably durable, being able to handle fighting other creatures underwater, smashing through walls/windows, and handle the impact of Sonic’s own speedy attacks.

The Tornado:

Sonic’s signature airplane, though it's mostly piloted by Tails while Sonic stands on the wings. While Sonic has never flown it himself, considering his other vehicle experience, he could likely use it himself. It's capable of traveling across Mobius at high speeds, for when chasing an aerial threat, or when Sonic needs to get somewhere fast, but not too fast as to leave his little buddy behind. It's been destroyed and rebuilt many times, but is a handy little plane, can’t go wrong with a classic.

Aircraft:

Should Sonic ever need to get to a location, aerial or otherwise, with a large group of friends, he has a special aircraft capable of carrying 4 people he can pilot with ease.

Sonic also seems to have a variant of this craft capable of traveling underwater, and to incredibly deep depths near the ocean’s surface as well.

Bob Beaky Disguise:

When he needs to go undercover or mask his identity, he has a consistent cover he uses called “Bob Beaky”, a penguin that’s completely covered in winter gear, masking his form completely. He’s used it to fool his enemies on several occasions, and frequently used it to go incognito for long stretches of time.

However, during the later events of STCO he retired the disguise after his cover was publicly blown by the media. [STCO]

Item Monitors / PCs:

Item Monitors are described in depth within Stay Sonic (though they’re named PCs), as Kintobar created devices that atomically reconstructed themselves or absorbed rings in order to become useful to Sonic in his fight against Robotnik. Considering that Sonic 1 and 2 Genesis, as well as Sonic 2 Master System can all be reasoned to be canon to Fleeway Sonic, he should reasonably get access to all Item Monitors available in those games. This gives Sonic access to:

Ring Monitors: Gives Sonic an extra 10 Rings.

Power Sneakers (Statistics Amplification): Increases Sonic’s speed significantly for a brief time.

Shield (Barrier Creation): A one time use barrier which will protect Sonic from any hit.

Invincibility: A temporary invincibility powerup, making Sonic invulnerable to just about any form of harm for a limited amount of time.

Kintobor Computer:

A computer system kept at Sonic’s bases, containing an exact replication of Kintobor’s brain waves before being transformed into Dr. Robotnik by the Chaos Emeralds, created when his brain waves were somehow burned into a Golden Ring that was on the scene of the accident. Through the technical know-how of Porker Lewis, he devised a computer system that could have Kintobor’s personality built into it. While typically stored in a master computer at Sonic’s Secret Freedom Fighting Base, the intelligence can be transferred to a Laptop or a Golden Ring should he need to be brought on the go

He’s an incredible, state of the art system, able to hack into and control nearly any device in his vicinity. He’s able to keep tabs on Robotnik’s transmissions, keep track of the location of all of Robotnik’s forces, monitor specific zones to ensure he could detect when a zone is attacked to alert Sonic and friends, track and pinpoint large accumulations of Chaos Energy, and at his best, was eventually upgraded to the point that he could monitor the entire planet through spying on satellites and various sensor readings throughout the globe. He’s also displayed the ability to manipulate machinery in order to manipulate Chaos Energy, such as when he used a Star Post to pull all of Super Sonic’s Chaos Energy out of Sonic, and sent it to the Special Zone. After being hacked into by Grimer, Robotnik’s second hand, Porker would install a protective sub-routine to ensure that Kintobor’s main system would be hack-proof.

The Computer also has incredible analytical and predictive abilities. When installed on a weapon, the computer had analyzed Sonic and knew him so well that he was able to perfectly predict any action he could or planned to take

Through unexplained means, he was once able to open up a portal through time that allowed Sonic and Johnny to travel several years into the future, and then another one that allowed them to go back in time as well [STCO].

Kintobor Wristwatch:

A wristwatch used by Sonic to communicate with the Kintobor computer. This allows for him to be relayed any and all necessary information at any point, allowing him to consult the Kintobor Computer for essentially any of its available resources.

The Wristwatch’s range is somewhat inconsistent throughout the series, however. At its worst, Kintobor’s communications systems lost connection to Amy on Miracle Planet when she was teleported through space-time to another part of the universe, but at its best, the Wristwatch could keep in touch with Tails in the Nameless Zone, an entirely separate dimension [STCO].

The Complete Chaos Emeralds & Master Emerald:

The Chaos Emeralds are sources of immense power and energy, containing an infinite supply of energy. They also have the notable ability to absorb the evil of those they’re near, turning those next to them into mellow, happier individuals (at least for a while). In fact, this evil absorption is what led to the direct creation of Super Sonic within Sonic, as he was blasted with a dose of evil infested Chaos Energy, creating Super Sonic within him.

Sonic initially protected the 6 Emeralds in their Incomplete States, having all of them safely secured in a box that would regulate their temperatures in a secure location so as to not make them turn volatile. The Incomplete Emeralds, while drained of most of their power, still held enough power within the release of a potent dose of negative Chaos Energy that created Super Sonic.

They would later be fused together with the other 6 emeralds (yes, there are 12 Chaos Emeralds), and then fully powered up, in order to form The Complete Chaos Emeralds. The Complete Chaos Emeralds are significantly more powerful, allowing whoever absorbs or draws power from them to achieve incredible reality warping powers, being the power source for Super Sonic, God Robotnik, and Perfect Chaos. Sonic no longer keeps the emeralds on hand once they became The Complete Emeralds, as he would forfeit them to Knuckles so they could be safely watched at and empower the Floating Island, though he regularly visits and even lives on the Island for a time. While they are not a part of his standard equipment, his Super Form has all the powers netted by them due to… being powered up by them…

Kasen Ibaraki:

Artificial Arm:

Kasen’s signature bandaged arm isn’t actually an arm covered in bandages, no, it’s an artificial arm composed of a vaporous black smoke and bandages. However, it can compress itself to look just like a bandaged arm, and despite being made of smoke and bandages, has the full functionality of a regular arm, able to grab, hold, and punch things just as any arm could. Its strange composition also gives it a myriad of different functions and abilities. It can disconnect from her body and be remotely controlled on it's own to grab things at long distances, it can stretch further than normal to extend her reach, it can grow in size, ensnare opponents, create cocoons to withhold opponents, twist and spin in contortions to spin opponents like a tornado, release energy blasts, and much more.

Its most important ability however, is its ability to grab and crush spirits, souls, ghosts, phantoms, any non-corporeal spiritual entity can be crushed by her prosthetic arm. Any spirit crushed by her arm is completely obliterated, to the point of being removed from the cycle of reincarnation, with even Shinigami being puzzled by its ability to do so.

Ibaraki Box of Medicine:

A special one shou box (approximately 2 liters) that has the special ability to cure all illnesses or heal any injury of the one who drinks from it. Should the drinker already be healthy, they’ll be granted extraordinary superhuman strength. It does have some drawbacks however, in that whoever uses it will temporarily become like an Oni in personality shortly after drinking from it, and should anyone repeatedly use it, they will become an Oni overtime as well. Considering Kasen is already an Oni, neither of those things are of concern to her, though, so she mainly uses it to drink Sake from.

Danmaku:

Do you like pretty colors? I sure hope you do.

Nearly every character in the Touhou franchise is capable of creating danmaku. Danmaku battles are the main method of combat within the Touhou franchise, and Kasen has participated in many herself. Danmaku within Touhou is typically intended to be overwhelming, flashy, beautiful displays of elegance for competitive purposes to solve disputes, but to still be completely dodgeable despite that. However, those rules of combat can be broken, and unfair, impossible to dodge danmaku patterns can be created just as easily, in fact, an entire Touhou game was based around this concept. The distinction between fair and unfair danmaku is entirely up to the user, and in a serious fight to the death, Kasen has no requirements to be fair.

Spell Cards:

Spell Cards are the most integral form of attack within the verse of Touhou. Originally designed as a non-lethal form of combat meant to allow youkai and humans to combat each other on even terms, it has since become the most widespread form of combat present throughout the series. Virtually all fights are handled via spell card duels, which are restricted by a number of rules. First, one must give a ‘name’ to their spell cards, which defines the meaning, and thus the power, of an attack. Second, one must make their attacks stylized or ‘beautiful’, usually in the form of complex danmaku patterns. In the words of Marisa Kirisame, if one were to solely opt for the strongest, most powerful danmaku, there would only be a single ‘best’ variation, leading to repetitive and boring fights, and thus, a boring and repetitive lifestyle. These patterns are usually used to represent concepts tied to the user (ie; Marisa’s penchant for star-based magic being commonly represented in her spell cards), their personality, or even their history. Third, the spell cards must be fair in nature; While Touhou’s danmaku is infamously difficult, in-universe it is designed to be dodgeable by even novice fighters, serving the aforementioned purpose of equalizing fights with a large discrepancy in power. Finally, a spell card duel concludes when one person has successfully dodged all the spell cards of their opponent, or has ‘timed out’ their opponent.

While spell cards are generally designed to be used for non-lethal combat, the rules are ultimately still just rules, and can be broken. It is stated that accidents do occur under spell card rules, implying that injury and death are still possible, and Marisa has compiled a small sampling of spell cards capable of outright killing their targets. Furthermore, Junko’s spell cards are ALL designed with the specific intent of killing people. Thus, spell cards are still capable of being used as fully lethal attacks; The distinction between lethal and non-lethal is ultimately the choice of the user. Finally, a spell card user is still capable of using unfair danmaku patterns, with many gladly using impossible to dodge patterns against those they deem threatening enough (such as Seija, who had an entire game based around Spell Card Rules not being followed, with Impossible Spell Card).

While spell cards were initially intended to be literal cards that one carried on their person, this idea has since been retconned, and spell cards are now solely stylized representations of one’s abilities that do not require any sort of extra equipment (save for instances such as Marisa’s Mini-Hakkero).

Koutei:

Kasen’s pet dragon Koutei is one of her most notable pets, as it can easily pick up or carry around her and other humans with ease, and is powerful enough to generate storms, causing severe downpours and lightning.

Kume:

Kasen’s pet Dapeng, a giant eagle cryptid. The bird is powerful enough to easily carry Kasen’s weight on her back and fly her long distances. It can also assist her in battle, attacking opponents and letting her hang off of its legs.

Kanda:

Kasen’s other pet eagle, and her planned successor for Kume due to his old age. While Kanda is still young and inexperienced, having difficulty with tasks such as shopping and navigation, he can still assist her in battle like the rest of her pets, and will one day grow to be as large and fearsome as Kume… probably.

Mukou:

Kasen’s pet Raijuu, is another cryptid of surprisingly immense strength, being one of Kasen’s deadlier pets despite its cute appearance.

Houso:

The Alpha of Awe. The Brute of Brawn. The Cultivator of Class. The Duke of Domination. The Emperor of Eloquence. The Fiercest of Fighters. The Greatest of Glory. The Height of Heroism. The Imperator of Intellectualism. The Jarl of Justice. The King of Knights. The Lord of Loquaciousness. The Master of Mortality. The Naysayer of Noobs. The Overlord of Obituaries. The Prince of Passion. The Que-hagen of Quixote. The Ruler of Ruination. The Sultan of Smite. The Taskmaster of Trembles. The Undertaker of Ubiquity. The Vaeyen of Vociferousness. The Warranter of Weaklings. The Xenophobe of Xenogeny. The Yardmaster of Yesteryear. The Zhar of Zoroastrianism. Kasen’s pet bigass fucking tiger. It guards her home within her Senkai, warding off intruders, though not attacking them unless provoked. Kasen can also easily summon it into battle. Houso is notably powerful, in fact, he was able to injure Marisa Kirisame, giving her a severe slash wound on an arm that she had to have treated, likely making it one of Kasen’s most powerful pets. Either that or it's a hilarious outlier but idc.

He also has enough frame advantage for Kasen to both declare and use a spell card in the same combo. Kneel for Houso-Sama, now.

Manzairaku:

A seal that somehow made its way into Gensokyo after being forgotten by the populace of the city in the real world. While he lives with the Kappa in Genbu Ravine, Kasen has the ability to summon him in battle in the floater fighters to get off a quick attack, before returning to his watery home. Even the artist of her manga doesn’t know how the fuck Kasen summons him.

(Kasen has a number of other pets living in her home, but any others aren’t worth talking about as they generally aren’t combat applicable and thus, are not worth mentioning, except for this puppy, he’s so cute he’s absolutely worth mentioning)

Ibaraki-Douji’s Arm:

Specifically sealed away within a box meant to contain it, is Kasen’s right arm. Within her right arm, contains her true form and power as an Oni, allowing her to unleash her full potential, but also contains an alternate personality, the festering manifestation of all her malice and hatred from her life as a warmongering Oni. Should she be re-formed with this arm, she shall become a full Oni once again, but also become an incredible threat.

The mummified arm itself is also markedly durable, to the point that after being sealed, Reimu tried for an extended period of time to destroy it, even stabbing it with the Onikirimaru, but to no avail. Even Kasen herself admitted the arm could not be destroyed, meaning it’s likely near indestructible.

Fragment of Onikirimaru:

It’s unknown how or where she got it from, but Kasen has within her possession a fragment of the Onikirimaru blade, the only thing that can sever and seal away her arm. She snuck a piece of the blade in food she provided to Reimu before fusing with her arm to allow Reimu the chance to seal her arm away yet again. While we don’t see her with it afterwards, it’s likely she kept this fragment in case her arm should ever need to be re-sealed. You don’t need to necessarily use the blade itself to slice the arm off either, as you could just use it to empower your own attacks to have sealing properties, like Reimu did with her Fantasy Seal.

Forms:

Before we can begin discussing abilities, haxx and feats, first we need to address and acknowledge the specific forms of the combatants, as some abilities are restricted to (or only shown by) a specific form.

Sonic:

Super Sonic:

The infamous and iconic form granted… well, moreso cursed upon Sonic by the Chaos Emeralds! Super Sonic isn’t a standard power up like it is in the Games or Archie in Fleetway, instead being a completely different personality… that comes with being a massive boost in power! Super Sonic is an absurdly powerful entity composed of Pure Chaos Energy, but also a complete psychopathic maniac due to being created by the evil contained within the Emeralds! Super Sonic is functionally hatred incarnate; who wants nothing more than to cause destruction and make others suffer, and have a grand ole time while doing so. Sonic actually spends the majority of Fleetway’s runtime trying to prevent him from taking over his body and gaining control, as every opportunity he gets to do so is another chance for him to wreak havoc upon the world, possibly realizing prophecy and acting as Iblis, destroyer of Mobius.

Super Sonic can be accessed in a multitude of ways, and isn’t limited to just the presence of the Chaos Emeralds or large quantities of Chaos Energy. Sonic can enter his Super Form if he collects too many rings, their energy transforming him, or he can tap into the latent ring energy he’s absorbed over the years to manually enter the state. The most common method of him transforming into Super Sonic however, is through too much stress! On multiple occasions, when put under too much stress, whether mentally or physically, or even “being pushed to his limits” Sonic has transformed into Super Sonic. When transforming in this way, Super Sonic simply runs off of the latent Chaos Energy remaining in Sonic’s body… which he has a metric fuckton of. Sonic simply fades back to his base form should Super Sonic run through the Chaos Energy in his body… or just get bored [STCO].

On a few occasions, Super Sonic has even had his body separated from Sonic’s. However, the sheer amount of Chaos Energy within Sonic allowed Super Sonic to manifest a full, physical form, existing as an energy being. However, existing on his own like this causes him to gradually bleed Chaos Energy overtime, and if he doesn’t absorb any in some way, he will eventually die.

Hyper Sonic:

Or Just Sonic, as Tails calls him. Hyper Sonic is the state Sonic was able to achieve after absorbing a ludicrous amount of Pure Chaos Energy. Not negative energy like what turned him into Super Sonic, but Pure Chaos Energy, not evil nor good, which allowed Sonic to harness it and do what he wished to with it.

Hyper Sonic is ludicrously powerful, likely just as, if not possibly even stronger than Super Sonic due to the amount of Chaos Energy absorbed, a combination of the Complete Chaos Emeralds, the Master Emerald, and the Chaos Tap’s totality, with a statement from the writer even implying that he had absorbed all the Chaos Energy in the “planet/galaxy/universe whatever”, and the Data Zone states that he tapped into “previously unseen power”, signifying it was a monstrous amount of power attained in this form. Sonic being able to enter this state at any point is dubious, as the massive amount of Pure Chaos Energy available when he attained the state isn’t something that’s likely easy to replicate, though it's likely not impossible, just very unviable in a fight scenario.

Merged Sonic:

Less a form and more a state of being, but in Exit: Sonic, the chronological final STC story to ever be told, Sonic is merged with Super Sonic by having their quantum wavelengths aligned, causing them to finally, permanently be merged into one being, with Super Sonic’s evil personality vanquished and gone forever, Sonic now the only one, and finally healed.

Presumably, Sonic, having merged with Super Sonic, a being of pure, unbridled Chaos Energy, would likely have access to all his powers and be comparable in stats, as they’re just flat out the same person now. However, it is ultimately speculative, and there’s no way to be fully proven for sure, as STC as a whole ends immediately after these events.

Kasen Ibaraki:

Ibaraki-Douji:

Ibaraki-Douji is the evil, malevolent personality once carried within Kasen Ibaraki back when she was one of the Four Devas of the Mountain, a monster who killed and pillaged as she pleased, acting as a true, proper Oni, one of the most powerful and respected of them all. That is, until her arm was sliced off and sealed by the powerful blade Onikirimaru, which simultaneously forced all of Kasen’s malice into said arm. This process resulted in all the collected malice to congregate within the arm, developing into its own personality and individual, that being Ibaraki-Douji’s Arm. Ibaraki-Douji essentially represents the evil being Kasen used to be, never changing its ways and remaining as a purely evil, malicious entity intent to be a “proper” Oni, gladly killing and consuming any humans she comes across.

The arm, after being unsealed, is capable of constituting it's own body, described as a “non-existent real form”, looks nearly identical to Kasen, just with a slightly different outfit, more rough, ragged hair, having both her arms with long claws, and medium length oni horns.

Deva Kasen:

The true, original state of Kasen Ibaraki, back when she was one of the Four Devas, able to be created through the re-union of Kasen, as well as Ibaraki-Douji’s arm into the same body. However, after the separation of their beings caused by the severing of her arm, and the subsequent thousand years to allow both to develop into wildly different people, they no longer share one mind, instead being two minds existing within the same body.

In this state, Kasen is ludicrously powerful, having had the full might of her Oni strength restored, and become even more powerful through the merger of their bodies, to the point that she’s borderline undefeatable to Reimu. This comes at a cost however, as due to being of two minds, they essentially exist in turmoil with one another, as Kasen no longer aligns herself with the evil nature she used to have, having grown and changed across her thousand years of separation, and naturally, works against Ibaraki-Douji. However, Ibaraki-Douji is able to take full control of Kasen’s body, and act out her violent and malicious ways more easily.

Abilities & Haxx:

Sonic:

Bodily Weaponry and Body Control:

Sonic’s spines are sharp, dangerous weapons he can use against his opponents by spinning into a ball and slamming into them with his spin attack, and various other ways. He’s also a complete master at manipulating his body, able to twist and contort it in a variety of ways, with his spin dash being the most iconic example.

Underground Mobility:

Sonic can use his spinball abilities to burrow through the ground like a hedgehog.

Afterimage Creation:

Sonic can move so fast that he creates after images just from moving, which he can even use to try and disorient opponents.

Vibration Manipulation & Forcefield Creation:

Fleetway Sonic’s most unique and notable ability, would be his vibration manipulation. As seen above, Sonic can vibrate the air molecules in front of him at sonic speeds in order to create attack-repelling force fields (his Insta-Shield!). He can cause earthquakes just by running, move at super speed to cause a robot to vibrate into pieces, can disorient people by rapidly vibrating them, can loosen bindings such as ropes by vibrating the part of his body that’s tied, and even weaken the molecular structure of things, allowing him to bust out of most bonds [STCO].

Air & Wind Manipulation:

Through his speed, Sonic is able to manipulate the air and wind in many ways. He can rotate his arm quickly enough to create powerful windblasts capable of funneling gas away, as well as move fast enough that he can create tornadoes capable of putting out large fires, tear apart structures from within, create wind funnels, or even create a “Speed Cocoon” capable of suppressing a city destroying missile’s explosion. He could even run fast enough to create a vortex that let him reverse the rotation of a massive drill. Even Sonic’s slipstreams are notable, as he’s used them to suck up and redirect crossbow bolts. As Super Sonic, he was even able to hyper compress lava in order to turn it to stone.

His wind vortexes are even able to take advantage of the surrounding environment, creating small sandstorms or snow vortexes. His Speed Cocoons can even manage to redirect electricity. He’s even able to create a wind vortex strong enough to lift an entire moving train while it was moving at top speed, and pull it backwards off the tracks it was moving on [STCO].

Water Running:

He can run on water. Pretty simple.

Heat & Fire Manipulation:

While rather limited in application, Sonic can manipulate fire through sheer speed, being able to superheat sand into glass just by running on it, as well as run fast enough to cause enough friction to create intense heat [Novels] or bursts of fire. It’s also noted that if he’s not careful, he can build up enough static from moving fast enough to accidentally launch sparks around and light things on fire [Novels].

Acausality (Type 1):

Sonic’s undergone a lot of timey wimey bullshit in his adventures. He managed to be unaffected by the Brotherhood of Metallix changing history, completely altering the planet of Mobius. Most notably though, was when he was unaffected by Robotnik erasing him from history! While nobody else could remember him, and despite literally being erased from history, Sonic still existed just fine. Sonic was also able to exist and interact with himself from the past just fine. He once even fought with his past self as well [STCO].

Enhanced Senses:

Sonic gets a “prickling in his spines” warning him of potential incoming danger. Shortly after feeling the sensation, Robotnik arrives from another dimension [Novels]. He’s also noted to be especially sensitive to bad odors, and because of this he is always aware of when Robotnik is in the vicinity. [Novels]

Fourth Wall Breaking:

Sonic is, to an absolutely ludicrous extent, fully aware of the medium he exists within, and very commonly likes to make jokes and acknowledgements of that fact. Sonic makes reference to and acknowledgement of the fact that he, and the story being told right now, is within a book, even when other characters aren’t aware. He makes explicit reference to the existence of the readers, the fact that he and Tails originate as video-game characters, but are within a book right now, that he and Tails are stars of “screen and MegaDrive”, makes explicit reference to about Special Stages “in the next game”, and even knows how many pages are left to wrap up the story. In Stay Sonic, he even directly speaks to the reader (and makes fun of Mario). Tails also makes explicit mention of the amount of chapters that have passed by, with Sonic acknowledging it. [Novels]

Resistances:

Poison Manipulation: Sonic has a multitude of showings in regards to poison manipulation:

Mind Manipulation: Sonic has entirely too many showings of resistance to mindhaxx.

Limited Memory Manipulation: Was able to recall all his memories after suffering amnesia from a severe impact through the simple act of hearing his name.

Fear Manipulation: While initially affected by Chaos’ Fear Manipulation, after the death of Johnny Lightfoot, Sonic learns to focus on his own intense emotions (such as rage) to resist the effects of fear manipulation, and power through it, even against the heavily enhanced Perfect Chaos. While he still feels the fear, he cannot be frozen by it.

Electricity Manipulation: Has tanked lightning on multiple occasions, and could endure being fully electrocuted by a past version of Robotnik and be relatively unharmed after [STCO].

Sealing: Was able to break out of the Omni-Viewer’s hold, which is capable of sealing opponents within him. [STCO]

Super Sonic:

“HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! LET ME SHOW YOU WHAT A REAL HEDGEHOG IS CAPABLE OF!”

Flight:

Super Sonic can freely fly around with no issue, even able to do so to and from space.

Chaos Energy Absorption:

One of Super Sonic’s most common abilities is absorbing Chaos Energy, he’s an absolute fiend for the shit. If anything has a large amount, or any amount of Chaos Energy within it, Super Sonic can freely absorb the energy from it for himself, even gaining the wielders' powers in the process, such as when he absorbed Omni-Viewer’s Chaos Energy and gained the ability to use Chaos Control from it [STCO]. His most notable example however, would be when he jumped into Perfect Chaos, an entity who had absorbed all the Chaos Emeralds and gained their full power… and absorbed all of his Chaos Energy.

Energy Projection:

Super Sonic’s absolute favorite hobby, blasting fuckers with eye lasers. He does it all the time, constantly, way too often. If I listed all the times he has we’d be here all day. He’s also capable of releasing AOE energy bursts.

Forcefield Creation:

Super Sonic can create barriers around his body to protect himself from attack [STCO] as seen above, and can also create large protective force fields to protect others… just so he can kill them himself later. The Chaos Emeralds also allow the Floating Island to generate a large protective barrier.

Teleportation:

Super Sonic learned how to use Chaos Control, a teleportation technique. [STCO]

Explosion Generation & Fire Manipulation:

He can freely create massive explosions from his body, which leaves behind large swathes of fire in his wake.

Low-Godly Regen:

Super Sonic was able to manifest himself a full physical body after all the Chaos Energy that made him up was ejected from Sonic’s body, essentially regenerating from a state of pure energy. God Robotnik, who’s powered by the Complete Chaos Emeralds like Super Sonic, was also able to regenerate his physical form in a completely different location after his previous body was obliterated.

Electron Bomb Blast:

Super Sonic was able to supercharge himself into an electron bomb, and created a massive explosion which released a planet wide EMP. This one ability has various effects, which will be broken down below:

Chaos Energy Scaling Abilities:

There’s a large number of abilities that have been granted by or performed by wielders of the Chaos Emeralds, or the Chaos Emeralds themselves that Super Sonic himself has never actually performed. While that may cast doubt on his ability to use them, considering these powers are granted to their users explicitly from Chaos Energy/The Chaos Emeralds themselves, and Super Sonic is powered by that same energy himself, there’s no real reason he WOULDN’T be able to access them. Anything excluded for Super Sonic will be noted in Before the Verdicts.

Time Travel & Age Manipulation:

God Robotnik was able to nearly instantly travel forwards and backwards in time, and is able to forcefully drag others alongside him, such as when he traveled 65 years into the future in an instant to age Sonic to the point of being elderly, before traveling back to the current day. He could likely still age someone forwards and backwards in time without utilizing time travel, however. The Chaos Emeralds were also used by the Echidna to send Sonic back to his proper place in time.

Power Nullification:

Was able to nullify Sonic’s speed and skill, preventing him from using any of his combat abilities, these abilities can also be returned/un-nullified

Telekinesis:

God Robotnik used telekinesis to throw Knuckles across the room by simply pointing at him.

Duplication:

God Robotnik could create duplicates of himself.

Intangibility:

God Robotnik could turn intangible, causing Sonic to phase right through him. He can also pair this trick with some teleportation for funny gags.

Shapeshifting & Transformation:

God Robotnik can easily alter his body’s shape and form, such as transforming it to an extra durable crystal-like form. He was also able to take many different forms while reshaping the universe to his whim to toy with Sonic.

Transmutation:

God Robotnik can transmute beings to stone, and has also used the Emeralds’ power to turn Tails into glass.

Mind Control & Possible Dream Manipulation:

God Robotnik is able to easily brainwash and control the minds of others, such as when he manipulates Knuckles’ mind to make him a devoted servant, or how every creation or summon of his is loyal to him. It’s also implied he employs some kind of manipulation of dreams upon those he brainwashes, as upon being released from Robotnik’s mental control, Knuckles notes he was having a strange dream (it is entirely possible that this is just him perceiving his previous mental state as a dream, it's unclarified).

Size Manipulation:

God Robotnik could alter his own size to be large enough to be able to hold the entirety of the Floating Island in his hands, or to dwarf the planet of Mobius to the point he could hold it in his hand. The energy of the Chaos Emeralds were also able to shrink Robotnik to subatomic sizes.

Dimensional Travel & BFR:

Robotnik sends Sonic to the Special Zone, which is a completely different universe, and also travels there himself.

Acausality (Type 1):

God Robotnik, despite being able to rewrite and erase history, to the point that he changed the events of his past making it so that Sonic never existed, which would have resulted in him never becoming Robotnik, still exists, making him immune to time paradoxes.

Summoning/Creation:

God Robotnik could summon/re-create several characters from across the Fleetway series, even characters that were canonically dead, and could forcefully control them to do his bidding. He was able to summon/create Metallix Mark I, Megatox, Plasma, Arnhem Abacus (who exists solely to control Plasma), Commander Brutus, Metamorphia, and he could likely summon any other characters in the series, so long as he can visualize them. Meaning entities that he has created such as Metallix Mark II, Knuckles Metallix, many of his machines, and even the Death Egg could easily be summoned. Some of these characters have specific abilities of their own, which will be listed down below:

While God Robotnik, and by extension, Super Sonic, could likely summon/recreate almost any other character in the Fleetway Universe, listing all of all of the characters in Fleetway and their abilities would be a complete pain in the ass, and would kind of be going far beyond the matchup itself, and such summons happening at all would be quite unlikely. It’s also unlikely that Super Sonic would know to summon every character in the verse, as he wouldn’t have the experience or memory of them to be able to visualize them in the first place.

Warping:

Perhaps the most impressive, powerful, and multi-faceted ability of Chaos Energy, is its ability to warp things. Chaos Energy is able to warp reality on a fundamental level in a variety of ways, such as:

Resistances:

Resistance to Cosmic Radiations and Extreme Cold: Can survive in space (in an illusion representative of his abilities).

Fear Manipulation: Super Sonic is flat out unaffected by fear manipulation in the slightest, completely unphased by Perfect Chaos’ fear aura, even in a weakened, near death state.

Absorption: Super Sonic was completely unaffected by the Chaos Emeralds’ abilities to absorb evil, not being drained out of Sonic while he held the Emeralds.

Fire Manipulation: Was engulfed in a massive oil fire and was completely unharmed.

Magma & Extreme Heat: Super Sonic withstood generating heat in the millions of degrees all around his body for an extended period of time. In an illusion (representative of his abilities), he even drilled to the core of the planet and out, completely unaffected.

Space-Time Manipulation / Time Slow: Super Sonic seemingly can disrupt time slowing abilities, such as when he freed himself from Omni-Viewer’s hold by charging himself up like an electronic bomb. Despite being caught within Omni-Viewer’s time slow, he was able to think and formulate a way to escape as well.

Possibly Time Stop: Omni-Viewer stated that Super Sonic was “too much” for him to stop in time, so he opted to slow him down instead.

Kasen Ibaraki:

Youkai Physiology:

Youkai are one of the most common species in Gensokyo, but in spite of this, their supernatural state of being gives them access to a wide variety of abilities:

Oni Physiology:

Being an Oni, Kasen has some other special physiological traits that are more specialized than the usual bog standard Youkai traits…

Guiding of Animals:

Kasen has an innate, incredible ability to be able to communicate, guide, and control animals. This includes all kinds, from regular animals, to cryptids, beast youkai, dragons, and potentially even some other types of youkai. She’s able to effortlessly understand what animals wish to tell her, and they will gladly listen to whatever she says. She has a variety of animal servants, and is also able to freely summon in combat, or just in general. Her animals also seem notably more powerful than most, potentially due to her training and care of them.

However her ability does have a notable limitation, in that it doesn’t extend to fish, however water based mammals are fair game.

Fangshi (Hermit Arts):

(Kasen’s Senkai as pictured in AoCF)

Hermits are capable of a variety of special arts, including various magical abilities, but one of the most notable is their ability to create their own Senkai. Senkai are essentially separate pocket dimensions that the creator can manipulate the size and contents of. Kasen has the capability to control the seasonal cycle and weather of her Senkai, and can alter the “path” to enter it as she pleases. Senkai’s are showcased to contain entire regions with moons, starry skies, and are even stated to be able to be infinite in size. While most Senkai are typically accessed through a crack, Kasen found a way to make her Senkai only accessible by taking a specific route she created to it, though she has full capability to alter this route at leisure, and could likely still access her Senkai via a crack as well. This is where her home, a large mansion/dojo is located, and is where she resides most of the time.

She’s also afforded some various other abilities by the way of the Hermit. She’s functionally immortal, unable to die of natural age related causes, and can maintain her body by natural cures. She can harden her skin to be comparable to that of steel, and has access to an array of magical hermit arts.

Although these abilities don’t encompass everything hermits can do, this is because some powers are specific to Shikaisen, or hermits that achieve their immortality by “dying”, storing their soul in a physical object, and being reborn in a new body. There’s no indication that Kasen went through this process, so she won’t be given any of the appropriate abilities.

Magic:

One of the most common abilities within Gensokyo is magic, being so ubiquitous in its use that it’s outright said that everyone uses it. Spell cards are magic spells that release one’s magic power, every supernatural feat a human performs is a kind of magic, and youkai frequently make use of magic. Though the forms it takes can vary greatly, basically any feat that isn’t just punching really hard is magic, meaning Kasen’s myriad abilities should be the same.

Spirit Manipulation:

“I FUCKING LOVE VERSE MECHANICS!!!!!”

-Said by nobody, ever

All things in Touhou, both living and spiritual entities, possess ‘Spirit’, acting as a universal energy source across the series. Spirit is not only a fundamental aspect of the use of magic, but is also directly tied to the existence of magic itself due to its connection to the mental layer of reality. This is shown through how Spirit in the fighting games acts as the meter used to achieve supernatural feats such as flight and most projectile attacks, while in the danmaku games, Spirit is the measure of your current shot’s power. However, Spirit is more than just energy; As is explained throughout Scarlet Weather Rhapsody and a few supplementary materials, Spirit is in fact the same as temperament, the emotional state of living things. Temperament is then stated to be the same thing as phantoms, which are the souls of living things. A few separate statements confirm that Spirit is also the stamina, chi, and subconscious of an individual.

Throughout the games, in addition to using Spirit as a primary source of energy, characters are frequently depicted as being able to reduce or absorb the amount of Spirit available to their opponent. Hitting opponents with danmaku can cause spirit power items to drop, with attacks being said to cause spiritual damage. Particularly powerful attacks can drain all of a person’s spiritual energy in one go. In more recent titles, it’s said that spell card duels can result in the “breaking” of one’s spirit, and spirit power items can be gathered from enemies or even the danmaku itself. Finally, magic has the property of “afflicting” one’s spirit.

Fortune:

In order to use magic, there are several components one must utilize in order for a spell to be successful. Chief among these is fortune; Insufficient fortune can make a spell fail regardless of other factors, while an abundance of it can overcome a deficiency of the other components. Due to its necessity in the use of magic, and the nigh-universal use of magic in Kasen’s arsenal, it’s reasonable to say she also has access to the effects of fortune, which are as follows:

Flight:

Kasen can freely and easily fly around. She can also summon her animal familiars to fly her around if desired.

Soul Removal & Manipulation:

Kasen/Ibaraki-Douji, in a fight with Reimu, hit her with an attack that separated Reimu’s soul from her body, and forcefully brought it to Avici within Hell.

BFR:

Kasen can BFR you by sending you to Avici, such as when she sent Reimu’s soul there after tearing it out of her body with an attack, or when she sent Reimu’s body to Avici as well, in a manner described as like teleportation/disappearing. Avici is within Hell, and is a realm stated to be infinite in size, an eternal prison devoid of time that traps the mind and gradually removes one’s senses. One particularly notable aspect of Hell is how you can’t simply leave, even if you have dimension-hopping powers; Exiting Hell requires nothing less than the permission of someone with the proper authority. She could also theoretically BFR someone into her Senkai, by trapping them within and sealing it off completely.

Non-Physical Interaction:

As previously established, Kasen’s Artificial Arm is capable of directly grasping and affecting souls, but those aren’t her only feats of NPI. She regularly fights youkai, which as established previously, are also incorporeal beings. In Urban Legend in Limbo, she’s able to do battle with Nyuudou like Unzan, who is literally a living cloud, and Koishi Komeiji, who has shut off her third eye and become a being devoid of a soul or consciousness similar to the Buddhist state of Śūnyatā/emptiness as a result.

Forcefield Creation:

She can create a forcefield around herself to block incoming attacks, and can passively create a barrier around herself even while stunned.

Wind Manipulation:

She can fire out miniature wind tornadoes as attacks.

Light Manipulation:

She can create orbs of light, in large quantities, can dissipate them at will, and can manipulate their size easily.

Enhanced Senses:

Was able to sense distortions in the Hakurei Barrier. She has a sharp sense of danger, and is able to sense auras and spiritual power. Magic users are also sensitive to changes in temperament.

Spatial Manipulation:

Was able to open a rift in space in order to yank Yukari out from “the other side of space”. Kasen was also capable of punching a hole in the Hakurei Barrier to allow passage to the Outside World.

Dimensional Travel:

Can create magical circles to transport herself to Otherworlds, such as Avici within Hell. She can freely leave the Hakurei Barrier to exit and re-enter Gensokyo as she pleases (and was even chastised by Yukari for doing this thoughtlessly when she went to get fish from the Outside World’s Oceans), with Marisa (unknowingly) describing the feeling of Kasen re-entering Gensokyo as “almost like opening a door to Makai” (Makai being an Otherworld in Touhou) and like “space warping”, and opened a hole in the barrier in ULiL several times as well. Being able to access her Senkai from just about anywhere also likely counts as a form of dimensional travel as well.

Sealing:

Kasen sealed her home, and said seals were so powerful that even Tenshi was unable to break them, despite being a Celestial who can easily shatter seals.

Summoning:

Outside of her aforementioned pets, utilizing her Last Word, she can summon a massive claw to attack her opponents, a Monkey’s paw, specifically.

Possession:

During the events of Antinomy of Common Flowers, Kasen gained access to Perfect Possession, a technique that allows one to take over one’s body and mind. While this can be done consensually, it is still able to forcefully take control of a person if desired. While this ability was tied to a singular incident, it should still be accessible by Kasen even after the incident ended, as its existence was tied to that of the Urban Legend incident, which never canonically ended.

Acausality (Types 1 & 4):

Was unaffected by Keine erasing the human village from history, despite the fact that youkai rely on the continued existence of the human village in order to sustain their own existence. Exists within the Hakurei Barrier, which created a world with a different flow of time and different physical laws, where there is no defined history and only distorted versions of past events can be recalled. Gensokyo lacks any history, and even if history were to be created, it could easily be altered.

Necromancy:

She can manipulate and control the dead, such as skeletons. Ibaraki-Douji in particular controls the skeletons of all those she’s consumed or killed over her lifetime.

4th Wall Breaking:

Kasen has quite literally held the script to her own manga. She’s also somehow aware of when a manga chapter ends without a proper conclusion.

Resistances:

Feats & Stats:

Sonic:

Overall:

  • Lead the Freedom Fighters against all kinds of threats to Mobius, and helped Tails become a true hero

  • Prevented the Brotherhood of Metallix from rewriting history and taking over the timeline

  • Lived with the humiliation of being transformed into a toaster.

  • Managed to escape from the Digital World and save all his friends from its virus.

  • Prevented Robotnik from making a dogshit movie.

  • Still continued fighting for good, even when slandered by the media and hated by most of the populace.

  • Has overthrown and completely squashed Robotnik’s world domination on two occasions, and also ruined his shitty movie.

  • Prevented the Drakkon Invasion of Mobius, saving the world.

  • Absorbed his evil counterpart Cinos The Anti-Sonic and came out just as heroic as always.

  • Saved his universe, the Fourth Dimension, and all of reality from destruction by the Mythos Forces in a complex time travel plot where he met himself on at least four different occasions.

  • Managed the monumental task of growing and changing as a person

  • Finally managed to have his happy ending, merging with Super Sonic and reverting Robotnik into Kintobar, bringing peace to Mobius for good.

Attack Potency & Durability:

Scaling:

Freedom Fighters:

Sonic’s best friends, the Freedom Fighters, such as Tails, Amy Rose, and Tekno have all fought alongside him and keep up with him, though Sonic is regularly shown to be relatively superior to them, even if they’re comparable, as they’ve regularly had scuffles in the past.

  • Tails can destroy a tank in a single punch

    • Tails and the tank were traveling in opposite directions of time when he connected, but he managed to endure the impact of this, so it's likely scalable to physicals despite

Knuckles:

Knuckles was a frequent rival and ally to Sonic throughout STC, and they have relatively often had squabbles and fights, and are shown to generally be comparable, if Sonic not having a slight edge.

Father Christmas:

Sonic was able to surprise Father Christmas with a sudden attack (with good intentions), and Big the Cat, who Sonic is obviously faster than, was able to fulfill Father Christmas’ role for a night, giving solid enough reasoning to scale to him.

Misc. Scaling:

Handful of feats from characters Sonic should reasonably scale to, seeing as Sonic is generally treated as the greatest hero/fighter in Mobius, essentially always holding back against who he fights, and is generally at least able to match or rival most opponents he runs into.

Super Sonic:

Any feats performed by the Chaos Emeralds, Incomplete or Complete, will be treated as Super Sonic’s own, considering he’s not only powered by them just as any other Chaos Emerald user, but was born from them.

Attack Potency & Durability:

*While this feat occurs in an illusion for Super Sonic, it’s made very clear that it's something he could replicate on his own if he truly desired.

Speed:

Misc. Scaling:

As the absolute top dog of the verse, Super Sonic upscales damn near every notable feat or weapon in the verse. He’s never been overpowered or defeated through physical means, only ever stopped through exploits relating to Chaos Energy or temporary methods like haxx. He’s ultimately depicted as unstoppable and untouchable by any and all, and he’s never had to take a fight seriously, the only character he arguably doesn’t scale to being Hyper Sonic. So ultimately, most feats should be fair game, especially as the plot point for an entire arc of STCO is that Super Sonic ultimately goes wild and ends up killing everyone else in a bad future.

*Super Sonic scaling to Hyper Sonic is a little dubious, however, this feat is honestly nothing beyond what Super Sonic has been shown to do, so it's very likely he could replicate a similar feat if he wished to.

**The language could be read either as Psyche teleporting them or Psyche physically propelling them, it's debatable what you interpret it as.

Kasen Ibaraki:

Overall:

  • Was a member of the Four Devas of the Mountain

  • Is one of the Sages of Gensokyo, and helped assist in the creation of Gensokyo

  • Drank Mamizou Futatsuiwa under the table

  • Helped resolve the Urban Legend Incident and Perfect Possession Incident

  • Kicked the everloving dogshit out of Reimu Hakurei as Oni of Hell Kasen

  • Ultimately spun the plan to allow Reimu to be prepared enough to take on and seal away her Ibaraki-Douji half, ensuring she’ll remain sealed and in her care for the remaining future.

  • Acts as a guardian figure to Reimu, helping to make sure she keeps her head on straight

Reimu and Marisa:

(Edit by Twice!)

Kasen has a rather good track record against the two main protagonists of the series. Having had bouts with Marisa Kirisame (while Kasen was holding back, no less), and most notably, pretty casually blocking Reimu’s angered blows and knocking Reimu on her ass as both Ibaraki-Douji and Oni of Hell Kasen, and utterly no-selling her attacks, leaving Reimu shocked by Kasen’s ludicrous power, to the point of thinking she was unbeatable. These characters have their own fairly lengthy scaling chains, which Kasen naturally also scales to, so this section will encompass characters who frequently show up as main protagonists.

Other Incident Resolvers:

(Edit By Twice!)

Seeing as Reimu and Marisa are the most powerful of the protagonists, that would naturally mean Kasen would scale to others such as Sakuya Izayoi, Reisen Udongein Inaba, or Youmu Konpaku, and other protagonists such as Sanae Kochiya, who are all generally on, or slightly below the level of Reimu or Marisa.

The Taoists:

(Edit By Twice!)

Kasen, being a Hermit, has interacted with other Taoists in the series a plenty, ranging from winning a fight against Mononobe no Futo while holding back (even with Futo attacking all of Kasen’s weak points), and with the Taoist leader Toyosatomimi no Miko outright admitting that Kasen’s power was far superior to her own. There’s also Seiga Kaku, who is noted to not even be especially versed in many Hermit Arts, and was nearly killed by Marisa on accident, who should be safe to scale to as well.

Being that the Taoists are direct rivals to the Buddhists of the Myouren Temple, and have had a multitude of battles with one another where they’re shown as on equal footing, Kasen should reasonably scale to their feats as well.

The Oni:

(Edit by Twice!)

Kasen should safely be able to scale to other members of the Oni species such as Zanmu Nippaku due to her especially high standing among Oni. Kasen was a member of the former group The Four Devas of the Mountain, which consisted of the high tension Japanese Oni Suika Ibuki, and Yuugi Hoshiguma, a group of the most powerful and respected oni of all. Yuugi Hoshiguma has been directly named as the most physically powerful character franchise on multiple occasions, and Yuugi generally only really likes the company of those who are strong, she wouldn’t sit among a group of characters so significantly below her either.

The Sages of Gensokyo:

Yukari Power Hour featuring Okina. (Edit By Twice!)

Seeing as Kasen was able to stand among Yukari and Okina as a Sage of Gensokyo, and Yukari genuinely revered Kasen’s stance as an ally, Kasen should be at least somewhat comparable in power to these two.

Cosmologies:

“The death of versus, the epitome of wank, the foolish idea of my infinity being larger than yours, I spit upon ye, and wish plague upon ye young.”

- Discount “Still Thinks Alucard Beats DIO and would happily be Lenore from Castlevania’s pet” Ginger

STC and Touhou are both rather underexplored verses, especially a composite STC, which means that I could throw out a bunch of metrics and people wouldn’t really understand fully, so I think it's important to do everyone’s favorite thing, and cover the cosmologies of both franchises at length.

However, I’ll be covering the basics that need to be understood of both verses within this blog, and not getting into every finer detail. If you wish to see a more elaborate deconstruction of both franchises’ cosmologies, check here for a coverage on STC, and here for Touhou.

Fleetway Composite Cosmology:

When compositing STC, STCO, and the novels, Fleetway’s cosmology get a lot larger and a noticeable bit more complicated, but I think it looks something a bit like this.

Mobius’ Universe:

To start off simple, let's talk about the main universe of Sonic the Comic, the “prime” universe, if you will. There’s not much in terms of explicit details in regards to the universe given in STC. We know that it's a regular universe, likely comparable in size to our observable universe. It has a replication of our real world solar system somewhere within it (although sometimes it's referred to as “in a parallel dimension”, it's inconsistent), and a multitude of made up planets and galaxies, some of which being millions of lightyears from Mobius. All in all there’s nothing really special to note here beyond it being a regular old universe with its own space-time. If you take the parallel dimension line at face value then it means there’s about two regular universes.

Something of note however, would be that the Universe, or more specifically, planet Mobius, was merged with Shanazar of the Microverse, an entire subatomic universe small enough that it exists within a single atom. Robotnik used a Dimensional Blender to cause the Microverse to rapidly expand, merging Shanazar with Earth, and possibly the rest of the Microverse with the main universe.

The Special Zone:

The Special Zone is a unique case compared to its Game Counterparts, not being some weird pocket reality created by the Chaos Emeralds that’s possibly a universe, instead being confirmed to be an entirely alternate universe, with its own planets and stars completely different from the main universe. It can be accessed via dimensional warps in various ways. The Special Zone still maintains a strange relationship with the Chaos Emeralds, however, being that should the Emeralds become unstable, they’ll warp to the Special Zone.

It should be noted though, that as of Issue #233 of STCO, the Special Zone was obliterated by the Chaos Emeralds meeting, changing Special Zone’s form into nothing but a white void of empty space.

Digital World:

The Digital World is introduced in the novel Sonic The Hedgehog And The Silicon Warriors, being a digital world that exists within a computer system spanning across the entire planet of Mobius, connected to various Robotnik outposts, among other computerized devices.

While the Digital World itself isn’t much of note, typically being described as large silicon like expanses, or outright digital locales, like walking directly into Sonic 1… the real actual game. It’s also explicitly noted multiple times to be a real location that physically exists, despite it existing within the Computer systems and being generally digital. Programs from within the computer can be transported out of it as physical entities, and real physical beings such as Sonic and Tails can be transported into the computer as physical, 3D entities, with Sonic even making note that within one of the games you can enter in the Game Directory, that there’s a specific obstacle that turns you from 3D to 2D, further implicating this is a real space of sorts.

What makes this most notable though, would be the fact that within the Digital World, exists Cyberspace, an area of pure, raw machine code. Which is described as a network of luminescent dots, lines of light, and clusters of data, with constellations being formed, the space spreading out into infinity in all directions surrounding them, with the planet spanning computer system they had been exploring until this point “laid out in miniature in front of them”. Pure electronic data forms shapes, with huge blocks of information making up the physical structures of Cyberspace, the surface of the blocks flashing with letters and numbers, a synopsis of data. Infinite size is further solidified when Sonic and Tails are launched through Cyberspace to escape it, with them being launched “from one infinite end of Cyberspace to the other”. Further support for infinite size comes by the mention of “shapes wavered and changed, their designs developing like deep fractals”, with fractals being infinitely complex shapes. Iggy also believed that Sonic and Tails might become lost inside Cyberspace forever after entering it.

Wish World:

There’s also an interesting world only seen once, that being The Wish World, a world Amy and Tekno reached through the Limbo Dimension (will be discussed later). It’s essentially a realm in which thoughts can become reality, which was being ruled by the villain Max Gamble. Max states that he “could have ruled the universe” if they had never intervened, implying that if this world isn’t already a universe, that if one were to think of this dimension as a universe, it will be one, meaning it could probably be filed into the cosmology as another universe/dimension.

Mirror Zone:

Mirror Zones are a rather underdeveloped topic within STC, only really appearing once within the comic itself, Issue #168 - Mirror Image, but the name is what you’d expect. A Mirror Zone is a parallel universe, one that acts as a mirror to a pre-existing universe, in this case, the “Prime” Universe.

The one Mirror Zone we see in the comic would be King Sonic’s Zone, an alternate universe where Sonic is actually an evil dictator who rules over Mobius. It’s never really clarified on if there are other Mirror Zones, and if so, how many.

One thing to note about Mirror Zones, is that it’s never stated if they were created by the merger of Mobius and Shanazar, or if they existed beforehand and the act of the merger created a tear into an alternate version of Mobius. Due to the uncertainty, I decided to simply make Mirror Zones their own thing, rather than just file it into the upcoming alternate dimensions section.

Alternate Dimensions:

This is where things get spicy. The Virgin Novels expand the cosmology by a much further degree by getting into alternate dimensions and timelines (which we’ll touch on later). Alternate dimensions are introduced and largely spoken of by the Time Police, who should be viewed as the most knowledgeable source of info on the cosmology at large, as it’s their job to monitor alternate dimensions and the time-stream to prevent mass chaos.

When discussing the technology they have access to, they make some peculiar statements. Agent Orange presents a device that can process up to 57 dimensions at once, while Agent Grey presents one that can function for travel through up to 5 Million Dimensions before needing to be replaced. Now, there’d be no reason for the Time Police to have equipment capable of traversing this many dimensions if there weren’t at least this many dimensions within the cosmology to begin with, meaning that as a solid lowball for the amount of alternate dimensions/universes within Fleetway’s cosmology would be 5 Million. There’s likely more, but there’s no current way to solidly calculate the amount.

Timelines:

The Time Cops also pay lip service to alternate timelines as well. Every dimension has its own timeline (naturally), and the cops take care to mention how big of a deal time travelers can be to the timeline. A single alteration to a timeline is stated to be capable of creating hundreds of thousands of alternate futures, compared to a piece of rope getting unraveled at the end, with it being their job to piece things back together.

Considering the way the cops are speaking, and considering the very existence of them in the first place, it implies this is a consistent issue and something that’s occurred many, many times in the past and is an issue they still have to work to resolve, meaning that there’s potentially hundreds of thousands of alternate timelines for various dimensions in the cosmology. However, due to the semantics involved there’s no way to get an exact number though.

The Limbo Dimension (The 4.5th Dimension):

I will refer to this exclusively as the “Limbo Dimension” in this document to avoid confusion for reasons you will see in the next section, however this space was also referred to as the 4.5th Dimension in its first appearance, though it's most synonymous with the name Limbo Dimension and is what it’s called most frequently

The Limbo Dimension is seen within STC a handful of times, and is most relevant within the Amy & Tekno series. The Limbo Dimension doesn’t really have a consistent design, ranging from an outer-space like appearance to a Special Zone-esque meld of colors, and sometimes even something in between.

The Limbo Dimension is mainly accessed through Ring of Eternity, a portal built by an Ancient Race of Space Dinosaurs (yes, seriously) so they could propagate life throughout chosen planets in other worlds. The Ring of Eternity can transport you throughout time and space to not just different locations within the “prime” universe (even at different points in time!), but also to all other dimensions, and for some reason, even into people’s mindscapes and to subatomic levels. It even took them to a weird space where representations of years (such as 1930 & 1999) come to enter the time-stream to signify a new year, with an interruption in this timestream collapsing history and causing the end of the timeline.

To put it simply, the Limbo Dimension essentially acts as the connective tissue between all dimensions, its name being the “Limbo” dimension is literal, it's essentially the “Limbo” between zones. Using it can allow one to travel between space, time, and other dimensions.

While the Limbo Dimension has been shown to be able to traverse a timeline on multiple occasions, it's uncertain if it could allow you to traverse across multiple split timelines like what the upcoming Fourth Dimension allows.

The Fourth Dimension:

Not to be confused with the previously covered 4.5th Dimension from the comics, the Fourth Dimension originates from the Virgin novels, specifically Sonic the Hedgehog in The Fourth Dimension (inspired title, I know).

The Fourth Dimension is noted to be “completely outside the normal universe”. It’s notably disconnected from the time-stream of all universes and timelines below it, as it’s stated that time travel and time paradoxes cannot occur within the Fourth Dimension, as the very dimension itself is programmed to prevent them. In order for someone to access alternate timelines, they must exit the Fourth Dimension and enter into the dimension they want to access, and then they’re free to select the point in time or the timeline they wish to visit.

It’s also referred to multiple times by multiple characters to be infinite in size, stated to go on forever in all directions. Within this infinite space, are “billions upon billions of floors” of space, and “endless corridors”, all of which “stretch out in all directions”. It should be noted however, that this does not mean the Fourth Dimension is a construct of billions of different infinite spaces containing their own space-times, it's more so just like partitioning an infinite space into multiple sectors.

The Fourth Dimension also notably has its own timeline and flow of time, with multiple statements of time passing within, the fact that the Fourth Dimension is used to monitor the passing of time and creation of temporal disruptions in other timelines, as well as a character named Captain Karl, who returns from a month into the future of the Fourth Dimension’s timeline, who reports on the progress of the war ongoing within it

Seeing as, if you take its name at face value, and this is actually the Fourth Dimension, it being stated to be an infinitely sized dimension as well as having its own temporal dimension via a timeline, thus 4 infinite spatial dimensions + 1 temporal dimension makes a relatively solid argument for 5D. One could also argue the Fourth Dimension as a hyper-timeline, seeing as it's used to monitor the timelines of all the dimensions within the cosmology.

The only way to access the Fourth Dimension are through specific technology, such as through the specialized technology developed by the Time Cops (Robotnik was also capable of developing a dimensional transference device that took him there as well).

Final Breakdown:

In short, Fleetway Sonic’s cosmology is shockingly large, it consists of:

There’s a single “Prime” universe, with a Special Zone, Wish World serving as a separate universe, and at least one “Mirror Zone” universe. There’s also upwards of 5 million other alternate dimensions, and potentially hundreds of thousands of different timelines within some of these dimensions and their timelines. Connecting to all of these dimensions is the Limbo Dimension, which acts as a connecting tissue to space, time, and all dimensions. Outside of all of this sits the Fourth Dimension, an infinite sized construct removed from space and immune to time paradoxes which acts as a governing force for all dimensions and timelines below it, ensuring reality remains safe, possibly being a 5 Dimensional construct (despite its name).

Touhou Cosmology:

Touhou’s cosmology can be viewed in a myriad of ways based on which viewpoint of tiering systems are used, so I’ll try and present one more conservative cosmology graph using the interpretation with what I consider to be the most solid foundation and evidence.

Gensokyo:

(Gensokyo is not actually surrounded by a sphere)

To start off, let's begin with Gensokyo, the main setting of most of the series. Formerly a small section of Meiji-era Japan, Gensokyo was sealed away with a barrier in order to isolate it from the oncoming age of reason and logic that would threaten Gensokyo’s native youkai and gods. This is known as the Hakurei Barrier, and it’s a non-euclidean barrier that causes space to loop, making it impossible to leave Gensokyo through physical movement alone; Specialized abilities, such as interdimensional portals, are required instead.

As Gensokyo is a small section of pre-industrialization Japan, it’s naturally quite small. There’s a human village, a mountain range, several lakes, a forest, and so on - No larger than Japan as a whole, naturally. That is, of course, excluding the Probability World, a parallel world containing alternate versions of characters within Gensokyo, containing a sun and being a separate world from Gensokyo - Albeit one still within the same dimension, somehow.

Gensokyo also acts as a connecting point to a variety of Otherworlds that we’ll get to. Heaven can be reached from the top of Youkai Mountain, a barrier (used to) block a path to the Netherworld, Makai has a gate or barrier that connects to Gensokyo, specific hidden passageways can lead into the Dream World, you can access the Sanzu River from Gensokyo, etc etc. Although many of these spaces are their own, separate dimensions sectioned off by conceptual barriers (much like the one surrounding Gensokyo itself), Gensokyo’s denizens can come and go between them with ease so long as they have enough power. While Gensokyo itself may be only a relatively small landmass (likely no larger than 60 km across, initially), it's an incredibly interconnected point within Touhou’s cosmology.

Now, mentioning Gensokyo after saying things would only entail a cosmic scope may seem strange at first, but it’ll make sense after the next location…

The Netherworld:

The Netherworld is… well, the netherworld, it's one of the Afterlifes you can end up in.

The Netherworld was increased in size by the Yama herself, in order to be even larger than Hell, a realm stated to be infinite in size (check the Hell section). It’s also stated to stretch on so far that “...no matter how fast you fly over it, it seems like it will never end”.

Although formerly one of many Otherworlds in the cosmology, during the events of Perfect Cherry Blossom, the barrier separating the Netherworld from Gensokyo was shattered. This has made the two realms physically coterminous with one another, making it so it’s easy to come and go between the two. Thus, for the purposes of this blog, Gensokyo and the Netherworld will be treated as the same space.

Hell:

Let's get a little bit of lore out of the way first. Within Touhou, the current Hell as we know it wasn’t the original Hell, it’s the “New Hell”. Hell was originally located in a location underground which can be accessed through tunnels and other methods. This location was finite in size and thus, became far too full to keep operating as is. This led to a massive movement of Hell from its original location to a new one, thus, there’s a location within Touhou known as “Former Hell” (or occasionally the “Underworld”)', this is specifically where characters such as the Komeiji Sisters and their pets live, containing locations such as the Palace of the Earth Spirits, The Moriya Nuclear Facility, or the Abandoned Hell of Blood Pools. The location we’re specifically talking about is specifically the “New Hell” where things were located, which I shall now refer to as just “Hell” for simplicity’s sake.

With that out of the way, let’s actually discuss Hell now. Hell exists as a multitude of different realms all under the name of “Hell”, meaning it's really several Hells. In the character bio for Hecatia, the Goddess of Hell herself, it’s stated that there’s a Hell for Gensokyo/Earth, The Moon, and for the “Otherworlds” (which is stated to include things such as the Dream World), for instance. Meaning that there’s at least 3 major Hells in total, however, likely far more.

Hell is stated to be infinite in size on a multitude of occasions, such as by ZUN himself in Strange Creators Interview 01, where he says “Hell is stupidly large… just you know, infinitely large.” Yachie, a denizen of the Animal Realm, which resides next to Hell, states this when referring to Hell: “Feel free to wander forever in Hell’s infinitely vast space.”

Avici:

An example of one of the “Other” Hells spoken of earlier, Avici is another Hell that is found in Chapter 49 of Wild and Horned Hermit, when Kasen banishes Reimu’s soul there. Avici is said to be (hilariously enough, presumably by an intercom system by those that watch over Avici) infinite in size (even saying “please enjoy infinity”), where not even time passes, and in appearance seems to be an infinite void of darkness.

Not much else is known about Avici, as the final few chapters of WaHH is the only time it's ever appeared, but it seems pretty congruent with what we know of other Hells to assume that this is likely a subsection of Hell or the Hell of some Otherworld.

Heaven:

Heaven is a rather prominent location within Touhou featured in a multitude of ways. It's the home of the Celestials, is supposed to be one of the locations the dead can be sent after being judged, and a whole bunch of characters love fucking with it. Heaven can be accessed from Gensokyo by going above Youkai Mountain, somewhere within the skies above it. It’s been stated that Heaven is somewhere in the clouds multiple times, somewhere far above the Netherworld, and once even in space. It exists somewhere between above the skies of the Earth, but under the Moon/Lunar Capitol.

Heaven was created long ago when the keystone was pulled from Earth, and has been referred to as paradise, even being stated as the astral plane. Visibly, Heaven appears to resemble a world in the skies, which even spreads to an area that resembles space, containing a large amount of galaxies within.

If we were to try and determine a finite size for Heaven, there is a method to do that. It’s noted that the god Amitabha resides in Heaven. Amitabha is 6 x 10^125 yojana tall (within Touhou, 1 yojana = about 7 kilometers). This would make Amitabha, and by extension, his Heaven, at the very least 108,787 Centillion times the volume of our observable universe.

However, finite sizes aren’t really necessary, considering that it’s been stated multiple times by several characters that Heaven is infinite in size. Yuyuko Saigyouji, the Lady of Hakugyoukoru within the Netherworld (essentially its “ruler”), states that “Heaven is even larger than the Netherworld.”, which is already an infinite realm. Kasen Ibaraki’s Dream Self, when referring to Dream Tenshi in Heaven, states that she’ll be found in the “limitless heights of the sky!”.

Another thing in support of Heaven being infinitely sized would, funnily enough, be Kaguya’s Corridor. In Imperishable Night, Kaguya Houraisan creates an infinite corridor made of infinitely linked pieces of space-time, stretching all the way up into the space between earth and the moon. This appears to be a contradiction at a glance, but is explained away with context given later in the series; The distance between the earth and moon is not what we know it to be in real life, but rather, it is separated by the expanse of Heaven. In order for Heaven to contain an infinitely long corridor in this manner, it must logically also be infinite.

What’s most notable however, is that Heaven isn’t just a single infinite realm/universe. In fact, the name Heaven might be misleading, it's actually Heavens! In Gensokyo Geography, it's stated that “there’s as many heavens as there are gods”. This is supported further by Yuyuko, who states that “It’s called Heaven, but they are actually separated like many worlds.”

This statement is notable, as within Touhou, there are a lot of Gods. In fact, let's cut straight to the point, within Touhou there’s a group of Gods known as the Eight Million Gods. The Eight Million Gods, the gods that existed before the world as we know it today, and were involved in the fundamental creation of reality, have their own heavens contained within the realm. Despite the name Eight Million, it's actually a pretty severe lowball, as even Perfect Memento in Strict Sense states that the count would likely be far higher. In fact, it’s likely even countless (in fact, the kanji used for “Eight Million” is “八百万”, which literally translates as “countless things”), and no matter how many gods one exterminates, there will always be more. The ‘ya’ in Yaoyorozu no Kami can be interpreted as a very large number of something, being treated as merely one step below ‘kyuu’, or infinity.

In total, Heaven contains at least a single Heaven that is at least 108,717 Centillion times universal, has been stated to be infinite in size by multiple sources, and at maximum, includes at least 8 Million Infinitely Sized Universes, and potentially even a Countless Amount of them, making Heaven a Multiverse.

Note: There was initially some confusion in regards to “Heaven” and “The Heavens” due to specifics related to Japanese kanji/katakana, and how they could be referring to two different places, meaning that they were technically different locations. However, they are treated as the same thing within the series multiple times, and has even been hard confirmed that Heaven isn’t a term exclusive to Tenkai.

Note^2: In regards to the “as many Heavens as there are gods” statement, the text does imply that “gods” in this case refers to “buddhas”; From an outside perspective, this would make this statement inapplicable to the Eight Million Gods. However, gods and buddhas are treated as the same entities in-universe, with Manifestation Theory (the idea that Buddhist deities took on the forms of Japanese kami) being a canonical part of the setting, and the buddha himself being likened to a god or divine spirit rather than, well, a buddha.

Makai:

Makai is an interesting case, as it’s actually something that originates from the PC-98 Era of Touhou, that was later re-tooled into Windows canon, unlike most PC-98 exclusive locations which were just never spoken of again. Makai was a realm created by Shinki, a Goddess who’s known as the, well, Goddess of Makai. It’s inhabited by a variety of demons and monsters of all sorts.

Within the PC-98 Era, specifically Mystic Square, Makai was originally only shown to have a starry sky and the arm of a galaxy contained within it. However, in the Windows canon, within Unidentified Fantastic Object, it's stated to be much larger. Minimatsu, the navigator of the Palanquin ship traveling to Makai to retrieve her master, states that Makai is infinite in size, with her master’s location being in Hokkai, which resides on the edge of Makai.

Senkais:

Senkais are personal pocket dimension realms that can be created by Hermits, which they can access from cracks anywhere at any time, or alternatively they can create special entrances where they’d like.

The Senkais we’ve seen the most of would be Kasen Ibaraki’s, and Toyosatomimi no Miko’s. Kasen’s Senkai has been shown to contain a fair amount of landmass, her home being surrounded by a large forest, and even containing an entire mountainous region. Miko’s Senkai in particular however, has been shown to contain not just a moon, but even an entire starry sky.

As illustrated above, Senkais can vary a bit in size, but this is by intention, as the creator can size Senkais however much they’d like, even being able to be expanded infinitely into any crack

All in all, Senkais range from Large Planet Level to Multi Solar System level in size, with a maximum size of Infinite should they be expanded to infinite size.

The Outside World:

The Outside World, otherwise known as… our universe! Touhou takes place relative to our real world timeline, with changes and occurrences in our real world affecting Touhou’s universe. The Outside World exists as a representation of our real world, and is intended to be essentially identical to it, with the difference that hundreds of years into the future, it becomes a hyper-capitalist dystopia. Which likely isn’t that far off, so it’ll probably stay accurate into the future.

The Outside World being heavily based upon our universe, obviously can be compared to at least the size of our observable universe, meaning it's at least a universal space, but that’s not all, in fact there’s far, far more to it…

In the stories attached to the music CD, Dr. Latency's Freak Report, Maribel Hearn is able to see Gensokyo through gaps, describing it in a scientific report as "infinitely small" relative to the Outside World. This is pretty notable since Gensokyo is infinite itself, having the barrier between it and the infinitely-large Netherworld destroyed during PCB. The Outside World itself is finite, being smaller than Amitabha (who is quite large - 108,717 Centillion x the observable universe, in fact - but not infinitely so). So Gensokyo is an infinite 4D space that is infinitely small relative to a universe with explicitly finite space.

It is stated in several guidebooks how the Outside World (not our real world; the in-universe equivalent of it) views Gensokyo much the same way we do: As games and manga, with the incidents within Gensokyo being viewed as nothing more than games to be played and manga to be read within The Outside World. From an out of universe perspective, the Outside World is deliberately written to be a “meta” element of the setting.

As an extension of this, ZUN is an in-universe character, retaining his role as the creator of the series, with characters directly acknowledging his presence at times. This is further elaborated upon by the existence of the Akyuu's Untouched Score CDs, in which Akyuu has direct access to CDs containing music from past games, which are noted to have been composed by people from the Outside World. There are even concerts held for these songs in Gensokyo, like this flier advertising one, and ZUN has stated that his own CDs frequently pass into fantasy (ie; enter Gensokyo). Characters like Marisa have even met and interacted with ZUN directly, being able to deliver letters written by him (as he’s too busy traveling between Gensokyo and the Outside World to do it himself).

There’s also an abundance of weird meta interactions between Touhou characters and The Outside World. Yukari was conceived as an inherently meta character, one whose power separates the world of games from the world of gamers, and who’s capable of killing abstract genres. Seija and Shinmyoumaru have overthrown ZUN's position as the "creator", Kosuzu interviewed the person creating her own figure (with Kosuzu being shown to own that figure in a later chapter), Sumireko, a human from the Outside World, makes mention of how Marisa’s outfit looks like ones seen at cosplay stores, and the opening to SCoOW's first issue is an extended description of how the people who create both official and fan works for Touhou partly exist within Gensokyo itself. That last bit is strongly reaffirmed in an interview with ZUN at the University of Peking, where he confirms the interviewer’s assertion that Touhou is a ‘meta’ series where the doujin community itself (in this case, the real-life Touhou convention Reitaisai) is a part of the setting, with ZUN noting that such things are actually commonplace in the series.

Fourth Wall breaking is also astoundingly common within Touhou. While debatably a large amount of them are gags and such, they’re still worth noting as auxiliary evidence. Random background characters reference things like hidden endings, game mechanics, or previous manga chapters. Main characters can advertise their place in the manga, describe events using game mechanics like difficulty options, or directly speak to the people reading the manga. In the latter case, Cirno is the one asking what "SaBND" is, implying the manga actually exists in-universe. Reimu and Marisa can also both talk to the player and explain game mechanics, and Marisa can even show Reimu future content in the game within its demo version. Reisen and Tewi are both aware of their own merchandise, and can respond to people who’ve bought their manga in-universe, Kasen can hold the script to her own manga, Marisa can break out of manga panels, characters can show each other footage from their own games, or speak directly to the audience.

In conclusion, there exists a vast amount of evidence to suggest that the Outside World views Gensokyo - and by extension, most of the cosmology - as both infinitely small and fictional, making it a higher dimension relative to these spaces. However, if you’d like even more evidence…

A Brief Tangent on Hero Yamada-kun

The above examples are not comprehensive, but to elaborate further would require us to get into secondary canon. Hero Yamada-kun (also known by its english title, Dandy Dungeon - Legend of Brave Yamada) is a parody RPG smartphone game, which has collaborated with multiple IPs in the past - Including Touhou Project. This specific collab is notable by virtue of it being worked on by ZUN himself, including programming and writing character dialogue. ZUN notes that Hero Yamada-kun is not a secondary work (as an aside, the bit of text Touhou fan products usually have designating that they aren’t official, which is required by the official fanwork guidelines, is conspicuously absent in this game), and he deliberately chose to have the collab take place outside of Gensokyo in order to preserve the worldview of the main series, implying ZUN wanted to keep the collab roughly accurate to canon. From this, we can reasonably conclude that the game is canon to an extent, though obviously not a part of the main series, so it’s being given its own subsection that can be ignored.

So why is this game notable? Well, the basic outline is that ZUN shows up in the game, installing a special program on the protagonist’s computer that forces him to play through a number of Touhou-themed dungeons. At the end of this gauntlet, ZUN teleports Yamada-kun into the Outside World, specifically the Twilight Bar (a location in the doujin shooter Uwabami Breakers, which ZUN also worked on, and has an implied connection to Touhou). Yamada-kun then fights ZUN directly, with ZUN summoning copies of Reimu and Marisa (the latter of which references grazing, another game mechanic), and manipulating the so-called “program world” as he pleases. Seija and Shinmyoumaru also show up and fight Yamada-kun, although they aren’t summoned or created by ZUN, they just arrive of their own accord through methods that aren’t really explained. From this, we can see that ZUN is clearly a character present within his own world, possessing the same control over the game world as he does in real life, and characters within the same setting can fight evenly with those who possess a similar degree of control as ZUN, while evidently aware of their own existential state.

Sanzu River:

The Sanzu River is a river that separates the world of the living from the afterlife of Higan, Higan being where souls are judged, deciding the fate of which afterlife they’ll be permanently placed in. It is a barrier that separates, yet connects the two worlds, while also not existing under the Hakurei Barrier. Similarly to how the Hakurei Barrier is the boundary between Gensokyo and the Outside World, the Sanzu is the boundary between the mortal world and the afterlife. Befitting its status as a difficult-to-cross border, the river is infinitely large, possessing an infinite supply of water and an infinite width. This width is somewhat variable, as it is frequently manipulated by shinigami depending on the value of the lives they ferry into the next world; Those who are wealthy will enjoy a leisurely boat ride across a short river, while those whose lives are worthless will find themselves trapped in an endless hell. That said, the river is generally kept at its full infinite width so as to prevent wayward humans and spirits from crossing it as they please.

The Sanzu River isn’t just a river in a literal sense, but in a more metaphysical sense as well. The reason traveling between Otherworlds is so difficult for most is because there is a force lying between each and every brane world, strongly resisting the transit of anything wanting to move from point A to point B. This is compared to the flow of a river, where each world is an object with a pattern dyed on it immersed in the river; The patterns dyed on each object (in other words, the people and objects contained within that world) can be washed away in the river’s currents, eventually reaching and “staining” another world, being seen as a foreign contaminant as a result. On the flipside of this, the reason why it’s so hard to travel between worlds is because of that same force; Just like trying to swim upstream is impossible, so too is it impossible to fight against the currents of this metaphorical river. This river is, of course, none other than the Sanzu River.

However, this containment and separation of worlds is not limited to physical space, but time as well. As shown prior, Maribel’s ability to travel between worlds is somewhat limited by the currents of the river, although as her powers grow in strength over time, this eventually becomes a non-issue. This teleportation doesn’t just let her move across dimensions, though, but time periods as well; Although the time when this occurred isn’t clear, at some point, her abilities accidentally carried her into Gensokyo’s distant past, where she wrote a letter that later ended up in the hands of Hieda no Akyuu in the present day. So, if the Sanzu River restricts Maribel’s abilities by virtue of its flow acting as the separating space between worlds, then this must also extend to her ability to move through time, and therefore acts as the separating force between the flows of time of each world.

This also raises another point: The Sanzu River has its own flow of time. This has to be the case, as Maribel is flowing through points in time via the river just as she does with the physical space that encompasses each Otherworld. There’s some auxiliary evidence backing this up, too - for starters, Komachi can manipulate the space of the river without issue, despite the fact that space and time are inseparable in Touhou. If there wasn’t a flow of time present in the Sanzu River, there wouldn’t be anything for her to manipulate at all. Furthermore, the Sanzu River exists outside of the Hakurei Barrier, which encompasses the earth and moon. By ZUN’s own account, such a space would be considered an Otherworld, and therefore another dimension with its own space-time.

In short, the Sanzu River is an infinitely large space containing all of the countless Otherworlds that exist embedded within its waters. The current of the river is what keeps these worlds separated, both spatially and temporally; As an infinite space embedding at least one 5D realm in its physical space, while also containing its own flow of time, it should qualify as a hypertimeline, and the “bulk” of reality that contains all of existence as an infinitesimal subset on its surface, and is therefore 6D.

The Three Layers of Reality:

Within Chapter 27 of Curiosities of Lotus Asia, Reimu explains in pretty great depth the mechanics of Fortune, and then explains the three fundamental layers of reality within the world of Touhou, and how they relate. These three layers being the Physical Layer, the Mental Layer, and the Memory Layer.

The Physical Layer:

The Physical Layer is, as the name implies, the layer of reality that deals with physical space. Reimu explains the layer as so:

First is the physical layer that moves in accordance with the laws of physics, including all living things, objects, etc. It is on this layer that an object falls towards the ground, and that the water of the river flows.

Essentially, anything that occupies regular, typical, physical space, resides on this layer of reality. Basically, everything within the cosmology listed  in this document above this section, resides in the Physical Layer. Gensokyo, the various otherworlds, The Outside World, and the Sanzu River, all being regular, physical spaces, would all exist on the physical layer.

The Mental Layer:

The second layer, The Mental Layer, is described as:

...One that moves with the spirit, which includes things such as magic and sorcery, the mental layer. One's mood turning sour when meeting an unpleasant person, and releasing all your stress and cares during a party lie here. Since most youkai can control the world through both the physical and mental layers, they say that history repeats itself and the future is predetermined as a prank.

This layer is, obviously, less physical in nature. Dealing with the feeling and release of emotions, thoughts, spirit, and magic.

Something interesting of note, is that Doremy Sweet, ruler of the Dream World, refers to the Dream World as existing in the “mental world”, supporting the idea that dreams and the Dream World exist on the Mental Layer.

The Memory Layer:

The third and final layer, the Memory Layer, plays a bit more of an esoteric role within the world. Described as:

...there is a third layer that rejects loops. The third layer is the layer of memory, which is the recollection of events that lies within all things. Since it's only possible to add to the memory layer, it's impossible to completely recreate the past. If something were to happen that already occurred in the past, then there would be a contradiction because that would imply that memory was lost, which is impossible. The memory layer always continues to build up.

The Memory Layer is ultimately the layer that “remembers” everything. It keeps account of everything that has ever happened, and prevents things from ever repeating, constantly building up as memory is attained more and more. This layer fundamentally prevents concepts such as, say, time loops, from existing or occurring within Touhou’s cosmology, reality itself working to ensure that something that occurred in the past never repeats again.

Dreams:

Are you ready for your daily dose of dream scaling? I sure am!

Dreams within Touhou are identical to reality, and this is made apparent many times on many different occasions.

Marisa, in Chapter 29 of Wild and Horned Hermit, states that “While dreams do make it easier to talk to the gods, ultimately they’re just another reality. If you try to do something to them, they might just do something back.”. It’s also stated in that same chapter that “A dream is a reality that Dream Souls see”.

Another important thing to note about Dreams, is that they can contain everything in the Physical Layer as we know it. It’s stated in Doremy Sweet’s bio, the baku who watches over dreams within the Dream World, that dreams can “go anywhere and become anything at all”. This is no exaggeration, either!  In Violet Detector, Sumireko can enter The Netherworld, despite having never been there herself, which as stated before, is an infinite space. Sumireko also has a multitude of Dreams that take place within Gensokyo, and Gensokyo is essentially her own Dream World. She’s also been to places such as the Lunar Capitol, and the Underworld.

In Chapter 29 of Wild and Horned Hermit, when put to sleep by a Dream Soul, Marisa finds herself in Sumireko’s Dream taking place in the Outside World. Dreams are frequently stated as being one to one with reality, with the Dream World being “the opposite side of the same coin” as reality. Dream selves, which originate from the Dream World, are perfect copies of their original self (save for small differences in their personality).

One particularly notable trait of dreams is that they seem to be infinitely recursive with one another. As mentioned prior, dreams are merely realities that dream souls see. But what are dream souls? Well, they’re one’s own dreams, separated from them and floating freely. This means that, contained within that dream, there lies another dream, so on and so forth. This is backed up by one of Yuyuko’s spell cards, in which she dreams of butterflies… which are entire dreams in and of themselves. In conclusion, there’s a strong implication of dreams existing with dreams in an infinitely recursive fashion, making a single dream a collection of an infinite number of 6D realms. At minimum, a dream can contain a single 5D or 6D realm.

The Dream World:

The Dream World is a fascinating location, and it’s where a large amount of our higher cosmology mumbo jumbo will come from…

The Dream World contains all dreams that have ever been dreamt, where they’re watched over, created, or consumed by the baku Doremy Sweet, who has a “Dream Journal”, which, in her words: “The dreams of everyone who’s ever dreamt are recorded here”. This means that, contained within the Dream World, are the dreams of every being currently living, and potentially even the dreams of every being that has ever lived. This is proven in Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom, where the Lunarians retreat inside a single dream, yet are shown to be in the Dream World itself. When Reimu and Marisa both start dreaming, they enter separate dreams from one another, yet both of them are said to be traveling through the Dream World.

While it’s impossible to know the exact extent of dreams contained within the Dream World at once, considering that Doremy is constantly eating and creating new ones, we can make rough guesstimates. During the events of Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom, the game where Doremy and the Dream World were introduced, the game would have taken place in 2015, its release year, the current World Population of Earth was 7.3 Billion, meaning that the Dream World would have to contain at least 7.3 Billion Dreams within itself. This number is a very generous lowball, as it doesn’t take into account any of the Otherworlds, such as the entities living within Heaven, Hell, Gensokyo, or anything else. This is also excluding the interpretation that dreams exist within dreams, which would make the Dream World a container for an infinite number of dreams, which could bring it up to an infinite amount of infinitely sized dreams.

Something of note, is that Doremy Sweet, the ruler of the Dream World, refers to it as the “mental world”, possibly supporting that the Dream World, and by proxy, dreams, would exist on the Mental Layer of reality.

One thing to note about the Dream World is that, despite containing so many copies of Otherworlds within itself, it is ultimately still an Otherworld in and of itself, making it an extradimensional space-time much like the Sanzu River.

In conclusion, the Dream World contains innumerable, possibly an infinite number of infinitely sized infinitely recursive 6D spaces within its physical space whilst possessing its own flow of time, making it solidly 7D.

The Boundary of Red and White:

While not exactly a place or space in any meaningful way, the Boundary of Red and White (sometimes Red is referred to as ”Scarlet”) predicates something of note, and that would be the entire goddamn cosmology. The Boundary of Red and White dictates the difference of “existence” and “non-existence”.

Red and White must be separated, they cannot be mixed. Red is symbolic of life, its color is that of human blood, “the color of a human’s first perception of life, a color of genesis”, and you can think of it as “existence itself”. White, however, represents zero, it can be turned into anything, but on its own, represents nothing, as white is not recognized as a proper color, just the absence of it. Effectively, it’s nothingness.

This single boundary in particular represents the boundary between all of existence, and complete nothingness. Essentially, destroying this boundary would effectively wipe the entire cosmology out of existence.

Final Breakdown:

So in conclusion, Touhou’s cosmology is comprised of a multitude of infinitely sized dimensions such as Gensokyo/The Netherworld, Hell and it's multiple sub-Hells such as Avici, Heaven and its multitude of individual Heavens, Makai, and possibly even the numerous Senkai made by Hermits. Beyond this however, viewing Gensokyo as a fictional realm, would be The Outside World, existing as a 5D space, which can be embedded within the physical space of the Sanzu River, an infinitely sized realm that contains all the various Otherworlds within Gensokyo’s Cosmology, existing as a 6D hyper timeline. Everything mentioned up to this point exists within the Physical Layer of reality.

Beyond the physical layer however, we enter the further layers of reality, the Mental and Memory Layers, and from here dreams are contained within the Dream World. Dreams are capable of containing every space that exists within the Physical Layer of reality, meaning they can not only contain infinitely sized constructs, but also the higher dimensional Outside World or Sanzu River, these dreams potentially acting as infinitely recursive. Containing all Dreams within the cosmology, would be the Dream World, an Otherworld likely residing within the Mental Layer is capable of containing an innumerable amount of these 5D-6D dreams within itself, acting as a 7D space.

Acting as the culminating point of all of this, would be the Boundary of Red and White, which represents the existence and non-existence of all reality within the cosmology, affecting this resulting in directly affecting all of existence.

Notes:

It should be noted however, that everything listed above is just the basic rundown of Touhou cosmology, there’s many further arguments to be made in relation to the Three Layers of Reality, Theory of Everything/String Theory/Brane Cosmology, among other things, that could be argued to bring the cosmology to higher levels as well. This is just the baseline coverage for what’s necessary in this blog. However, I do plan to make a full cosmology doc at a later date!

Also, it's time to address the elephant in the room. One major occurrence that happened during the process of creating this blog, would be the current proposed standards change for R>F Transcendence on VSBW. Currently, it's proposed that rather than being a single dimensional tier increase, R>F would actually jump straight up to the new 1A tier, being straight up Outerversal, at the expense of R>F requirements being tighter.

Seeing as Touhou likely meets those stricter guidelines, should they go through to pass and you prefer to follow those guidelines, essentially rather than Touhou’s cosmology starting at 5D with the Outside World, it would start at Outerversal, and then potentially get even larger cosmological scope through aforementioned realms such as the Sanzu and Dream World.

Weaknesses:

Sonic:

Sonic is a bit of a cocky dipshit, which can occasionally get him in over his head if he rushes in with little plan. While he doesn’t do it often, it is something he’s occasionally susceptible to. Sonic also notably holds back, never really intending to, and outright refusing to kill others, even pure evil individuals such as Robotnik he’s outright refused to kill in the past.

Sonic is notably vulnerable to power absorption, as when Robotnik hit him with a beam that absorbs energy/powers, Sonic was reverted to his original, brown, quilly hedgehog state, having completely lost his powers, including his super speed, putting him in deep shit if someone could pull this off.

As for Super Sonic, he’s got a few issues. First off, is his own damn personality. Super Sonic is a batshit insane sadist with a massive amount of arrogance, meaning he LOVES to hold back and toy with his victims while fighting them, never using his full power and very rarely using any sort of ability besides his laser vision or energy blasts in combat, preferring to physically dismantle his opponents. He’s NEVER once ever had to use his true power in combat, and every appearance he’s ever made is him intentionally holding back for fun, sometimes even FAKING being “hurt” in combat just for kicks, with it frequently resulting in his downfall. He’s also victim to tunnel vision, focusing so hard on fucking with his opponents or so deadset on getting more power that it could leave him in a bad spot.

Someone with powerful enough control over Chaos Energy or with artifacts capable of containing, forcefully removing, or controlling Chaos Energy could potentially disrupt or paralyze Super Sonic, such as in STCO when Zachary was able to briefly paralyze Super Sonic using the same staff that sealed away Chaos, or when Shadow’s control over Chaos Energy prevented Sonic from being able to absorb their Chaos Energy, the Gray Emerald being able to neutralize Chaos Energy, the Star Post tearing all the Chaos Energy out of Sonic, or when the Floating Island’s ejection systems forcefully jettisoned the Chaos Energy out of Sonic.

Most damning for Super Sonic however, would be that when he’s a separate entity from Sonic, Super Sonic will die if drained of all his Chaos Energy, though this process can take months to pass. This weakness is not present when he resides within Sonic, however.

Kasen Ibaraki:

Kasen, while kind, definitely is a little haughty at points, which might cause her to be shortsighted and try to solve things her own way, despite things not necessarily needing to be “solved”, such as her trying to train Reimu for perceiving her as “having too much worldly desire” or when she nearly inadvertently caused the destruction of Gensokyo by trying to solve the Urban Legend Incident herself. However, she’s generally mellowed out overtime, and these issues aren’t nearly as prominent, especially by the end of WaHH.

She also typically holds back her true power against opponents, both out of trying to hide her Oni nature from others, and likely not really wanting to kill others accidentally. She also seems to share the same weaknesses of most Oni, or at least, still has the psychological fear of them, those being fried soy beans and sardine heads pierced by holly branches. Kasen, or at least her arm, is notably susceptible to the Onikirimaru blade, the sword that severed her arm in the first place. Even a shard of it is powerful enough to lop off her arm and seal it away yet again.

Should Kasen fuse with Ibaraki-Douji’s arm, and go full Deva state, her Ibaraki-Douji personality is generally shown to be the more “dominant” one, able to shut Kasen out and take full control of her body. While Kasen is still conscious and able to pay attention, she’d be unable to take action. This essentially means that her own mind and body can be in turmoil with itself.

Kasen will also fold and take in any animal she finds cute, because she has no self control.

Before The Verdicts:

This is the part of the blog where we cover funny little quibbles and questions that are relevant to the debate, or just things that I felt needed to be addressed! I should note that my original KaSonic blog covers multiple specific interactions in this fight in its BTVs section, and those explanations still hold up! So feel free to look over those aspects there, I’ll just be covering the new shit here.

What’s up with R > F Transcendence?

One aspect of Touhou’s cosmology that may not be immediately well understood is how and why the Outside World seeing Gensokyo as fictional is so impressive. This is what some VS circles (primarily VS Battles Wiki) refer to as “reality > fiction transcendence” - the idea that seeing a reality as fictional is grounds for a dimensional jump. In the same way that fictional characters can never leap out of the pages of a book and hurt us in real life, a character who views what we consider reality as fictional also couldn’t be affected by anything we do down here, regardless of scale. It’s no different than how we view 2-dimensional space; Insignificant, and any destruction of 2D space is of no consequence to anyone chilling in the 3rd dimension. Because of this, R > F transcendence can be considered equal to other kinds of additional dimensions, like those granted by hypertimelines.

In the past few months, VSBW has also been leaning towards instituting a new take on R > F scaling, suggesting that it might be beyond dimensionality entirely (or Outerversal/Omniversal, in other words). Simply put, this is because R > F transcendence is based on a qualitative difference - one world being “more real” than another. This is incompatible with quantitative differences, such as those tied to mathematics; No matter how many universes, dimensions, or joules you stack on top of one another, it will never make a setting or character more real, making "realness" a factor transcendent of all of those measurements. It’s not clear just how widely this will be accepted off that wiki should the changes come to pass, so we’ll be ignoring Outerversal R > F scaling for this blog, and we’ll be sticking to VSBW’s current definition of the term (that is to say, a single additional dimension). Just know that there are ways to interpret this scaling as much higher than what we gave it here.

Does Kasen Without Deva State Scale High?:

Kasen is a top tier of the verse even without Deva status, frankly, Deva isn’t even fully necessary to scale to Reimu or other top tiers. Even without her arm, she was able to stand among the ranks of the Sages of Gensokyo, Yukari Yakumo and Okina Matara, two of Touhou’s absolute heaviest hitters, to the point of being a respected and desired ally by Yukari even in the current day. Even god tiers aside, she can have battles with Marisa Kirisame while holding back, and Ibaraki-Douji was beating the living shit out of Reimu Hakurei, both of which being main protagonists who scale to 90% of the feats in the verse, which as you saw in the scaling section, get pretty high up!

Considering Kasen on her own is able to physically restrain Ibaraki-Doujin completely, it’s not hard to believe that they’re likely about equal in power. Just when fused, they’re even monstrously beyond that. Deva Kasen is likely among the strongest characters in the verse, just generally upscaling everything Kasen has further. Considering that Deva Kasen was even a part of the Four Devas of the Mountain, alongside Yuugi Hosihguma and Suika Ibuki, another set of the strongest characters in verse, with Yuugi specifically being stated as the most physically powerful character in the series, it just further pushes that point home.

So even without Deval, Kasen still reliably scales to characters such as Tenshi, Reimu, etc which nets higher end Touhou scaling. Kasen doesn’t necessarily NEED to be in Deva Kasen state or involve Ibaraki-Douji in order to scale to the feats listed above, not that she would likely want to though.

Fleetway Atomic Universes?:

So, something I want to address that I covered in the cosmology section is the idea of Fleetway’s universe having an atomic universe within every atom, as if you account that fact for the size of a single universe in Fleetway, it can get some insane numbers.

AdamTheMango calculated that, assuming that every atom in the universe was universe sized, it would make the Fleetway Sonic Universe about … , and if we took into account the 5 Million Dimensions/Universes statement from Fourth Dimension, contained within those 5 Million dimensions there'd be around 5 Septenvigintillion to 5 Novemvigintillion Universes contained within! A batshit insane number for sure, but how much does the logic of there actually being a universe in every atom hold up?

Well, likely not. It's never really made clear if the Microverse we see was the only Microverse within the cosmology, as the Microverse is only ever referred to as a singular, and is rather often referred to as a “dimension”, heavily implying that the Microverse is centralized to its own dimension that you can access by shrinking down to subatomic levels. So ultimately, I don’t feel safe in saying that every single atom in the universe contains its own Microverse, rather, that the Microverse was one single dimension that existed on a subatomic level that you could travel to and from by shrinking and enlarging.

Also, just to note, even taking the high end of 5 Novemvigintillion Universes at face value, the Amitabha feat would still be about 1e200 times more impressive.

Heaven Is How Fucking Big???:

So I’m sure some people likely noticed the absurd size of the calc that Heaven got for its size and destruction, and while I initially didn’t give any major acknowledgement cause I figured it wouldn’t need any, but upon further thought and realizing that this is technically one of the highest finite AP calcs I’ve ever seen, it probably deserves a bit of a section covering it, so I’ll address a few points to get across why Heaven being a shitzillion times universal is consistent in universe and why characters scaling to it is fine.

So first off, this number is technically a gigantic lowball anyways, seeing as Heaven is stated to be infinite in size by multiple sources and as addressed is actually more of a multiverse of collective infinite spaces, which means any finite number is inherently underselling how actually vast it is, so Amitabha’s size is, inherently, a method used to get a minimum size for Heaven, and also for funsies.

Secondly, I’ll address the consistency of actually using Amitabha as a measurement for Heaven’s size. For a long time Amitabha’s size wasn’t really accepted as a possible way to measure Heaven due to how it was believed that him only being mentioned and explained within one music CD, Neo-Traditionalism of Japan, and those mentioning him not originating from Gensokyo making them possibly questionable as sources. Ignoring the fact that they’re humans relatively versed in the occult, and the way that common belief = reality works in Touhou, this isn’t actually true, as Amitabha is mentioned quite a few times in the main series itself, such as by Byakuren in Hopeless Masquerade, or Akyu in Forbidden Scrollery, both characters being rather knowledgeable on matters of the gods., further cementing his existence in universe as a real god residing in Heaven. Ultimately, there’s no real reason not to use Amitabha’s size for Heaven.

Finally, I’ll mention the consistency of feats of characters affecting Heaven within Touhou just to drive home the consistency of characters operating on this scale. As mentioned before, Suika Ibuki not only destroyed all of Heaven, but also pieced it all back together shortly afterwards, and Dream Tenshi shook all of Heaven while threatening to destroy it. Later on in a separate game, the real Tenshi’s Danmaku was stated to be able to split Heaven and Earth. The Celestial Dragon Tenyu is also stated to be able to make Heaven and Earth tremble, and the Dragon God is stated to be able to “rend the Heavens with his roar”. So ultimately, there’s 6 different instances of characters either directly affecting, destroying, or being stated to affect/destroy Heaven. That’s not even counting the feats that would scale to Heaven by proxy, such as any dream creation / destruction feat, Remilia’s Scarlet Mist, or Yukari’s Cosmology Wipe statement. There’s ultimately no less than 10 separate instances in verse where a character can, in one way or another, affect all of Heaven.

So in conclusion, not only is Heaven being a shitzillion times universal fine and supported within the series itself, it's ultimately a low end, and characters scaling to Heaven within the series is very supported with a wide multitude of feats.

What Chaos Abilities Weren’t Scaled to Super Sonic?:

As mentioned before, a few abilities weren’t given to Super Sonic despite us scaling him to 90% of all Chaos Emerald applications. What gives? Well, there are two specific circumstances I view as a bit too much to grant to Super Sonic. Those being most abilities performed by Shadow or Shadow II in STCO, as Shadow is explicitly a master at manipulating Chaos Energy beyond anyone else in the series, to the point he can even prevent Super Sonic emerging from Sonic, as well as and God Robotnik’s nigh-omniscience/omnipresence, as it would contradict just about everything plot wise in every arc Super Sonic appears in.

Does Fleetway Have NPI?:

A big thing in my blog that I made note of was that, aside from Super Sonic’s reality warping abilities, I couldn’t find any potential instances of NPI for Sonic! In fact, he only had anti-feats relating to NPI, not being able to properly hit liquid entities like Megatox or Chaos, and there’s multiple instances of ghosts or spirits being completely untouchable to him in the original comic. I couldn’t find anything NPI wise for Sonic in STCO however, but Knuckles had some rather interesting showings! He was seemingly able to punch a Echidna spirit in the face, damaging its face, as well as attack and damage Vichama, the God of Death, which was stated to be a “spiritual entity” and a “specter”, which means Knuckles can be argued to have non-physical interaction!

Now, there’s an issue of if it would even scale to Sonic however. Due to the nature of Knuckles’ stories often leaning into more spiritual or occult-like incidents, it could potentially just be an attribute exclusive to Knuckles. There could be a potential argument for Sonic or Super Sonic sharing the ability with Knuckles, but I still don’t feel fully safe agreeing with that idea fully.

Also I imagine you were confused reading all of this. God of Death? Echidna spirits? What the fuck is going on with Knuckles in STC/STCO? Well, I can summarize Knuckles’ entire life story in Fleetway with a single image actually, funnily enough.

How Strong Are Kasen’s Pets?:

There’s no exact tier to give them, but considering much of Kasen’s moveset in ULIL and AoCF is based around using them, and that Houso was even capable of injuring Marisa, it's likely that they’re all meant to be relative to the cast in some sense, even if they’re not exactly as powerful. You can have some give or take with this if you’d like, but there’d be no reason for Kasen to bring her pets into fights if she believed they would be at risk of dying instantly, especially with how much she cares for them.

Shouldn’t The Chaos Wave Only Be Universal?:

So something that could be used to try and knock down the Chaos Wave feat from Fourth Dimension would be the idea that, by proxy of it altering the Big Bang in Sonic’s main universe, it would solely be a universal feat. And, while yes, this feat is at minimum universal, there’s pretty reasonable arguments that the wave would go well beyond the scope of just a single universe.

While Kintobor makes explicit mention of how it will affect the Universe, he also makes use of terms such as “all of existence”, and Arctur, the one who crafted the plan in the first place, intends to wipe everything out for the express purpose of affecting the Fourth Dimension, which is made clear to “exist completely outside of the normal universe”. If the Chaos Wave is reaching the Fourth Dimension, it's likely reaching even further, and should likely encompass the entire cosmology just fine.

Don’t Spell Card Rules Invalidate Scaling?:

Not at all actually. While in a lot of cases Spell Card Rules can help create an equalized set of rules to make combat fair, for example, allowing Cirno to have somewhat ”””fair””” bouts with other characters, the SCR are not all encompassing. To start, they don’t equalize speed in any meaningful way, meaning that if you’re keeping up with someone in a duel, you have to be at least somewhat comparable in speed. SCR’s also don't equalize stats either, as one can still be overpowered in Spell Cards Duels, characters such as Suika Ibuki have their fighting styles revolve around physically overpowering people, and often her “spell cards'' are just physically beating the shit out of her opponent. Spell Cards can make lethal attacks non lethal in some circumstances, but it's not lowering the strength of a blow in any way. With this in mind, it makes instances where one character “goes all out” or uses their full power especially viable for scaling, as it still means their opponent is overpowering them despite using all their power.

The SCR also aren’t all encompassing, and can fail, as even within the SCR’s very own rules, it stated that accidents can and will happen, meaning that injury and death are still very possible. Spell Cards in of themselves also aren’t inherently intended for exclusively non-lethal combat, as Marisa has collected a sampling of various Spell Cards that can and will kill you. Not to mention, many of Junko’s Spell Cards were made with the express intention of killing people (and that’s why she’s the GOAT). During Grimoire of Usami, Seija and Shinmyoumaru show up and start using danmaku that’s noted to be potentially lethal, ignoring the typical spell card rules in doing so.

It should also be noted that not every fight in verse is fought under Spell Card Rules, and there’s been multiple instances where characters have fought with intent to kill. During the PC-98 games from Touhou 1-5, Spell Card Rules quite literally didn’t exist, as they hadn’t come into fruition until some point before Touhou 6. Mokou is known to never hold back in her duels, and in her fight in Imperishable Night the protagonists kill her several times, despite the fight being under SCR. Reimu’s fight with Ibaraki-Douji and Deva Kasen in WaHH also notably didn’t utilize Spell Card Rules, and was just Kasen trying to murder the shit out of Reimu, and Dream Tenshi’s fight with Jo’on and Shion was notably Tenshi trying to kill everyone and destroy Heaven to recreate it in a better image (in her eyes).

So in short, no, SCRs do not invalidate scaling, it just means you have to be a bit more vigilant when keeping track of feats and battles to see what qualifies for scaling.

What Happened to the 11D Touhou Arguments from MarisaYuffie?:

Those never happened. I don’t know what you’re talking about. That wasn’t me. Idk who that fraud was.

Okay, in all seriousness, the dimensional tiering sections in that blog were a complete and utter fucking mess, and frankly the whole blog was. Consider the dimensional tiering sections in this blog to be an apology, as I stand by them much more than I did what I had in MarisaYuffie and I think I have a much better understanding of d tiering arguments now.

While I think there are arguments to be had for 11D Touhou, the direction I took in MarisaYuffie was a massive misfire and I definitely should’ve waited longer before firing off such a thing. I do truly plan to redo MarisaYuffie one day to fix that mistake, as that matchup deserves much better coverage than what I’ve currently given it. Can’t guarantee it’ll be anytime soon, but I will make absolutely fucking sure it happens.

What Happened To The Dream World Crossing Calc From KaSonic 1?:

You all might remember the 22.5 Septillion C calc that was paraded around in the last blog quite brazenly, the Dream World crossing feat from LoLK, but it was suspiciously absent this time around, why is that? Well, while there’s nothing wrong with the math present for the calculation (that I know of), the feat itself, upon further investigation, had some holes in it. Particularly, the fact that it wasn’t 100% provable that the cast crossed the ENTIRE Dream World to get to their destination. While it is true that the Dream World exists between Gensokyo and the Lunar Capitol, it isn’t really known if the entirety of the Dream World exists in the space between, or if it's simply just that passageways can lead from Gensokyo into the Dream World, and then back out to the Lunar Capital through predetermined Passageways.

So ultimately, we decided to scrap the calc, and instead calc it as just crossing Kaian Passageway #4, the name of the place that they cross in LoLK, and had Rina redo the calc which got in the 200k C range.

So yeah, apologies on that y'all, we might’ve jumped the gun on that feat a lil bit. We found better stuff anyways though so lol. There’s a few other feats in the original blog that didn’t quite hold up to scrutiny as well, or simply just haven’t been recalcd which were also removed, but they were less egregious than the Dream World feat. Everyone makes mistakes I suppose.

Verdict:

Sonic:

(Edit by Twice!)

"Change reality anyway you like Robotnik! Whatever you do, I'll still fight you! And somehow, I'll win! Because no matter how ridiculous the situation. I'll never give up Robotnik! I'll never give up!

Advantages:

  • Warping would allow Super Sonic to directly attack Kasen’s information, bypassing her regen and killing her

  • Equal Speed with infinite ends

  • Regen prevents most traditional methods of Kasen killing him

  • Can resist Kasen’s Guiding of Animals, and should be able to endure the effects of Avici

  • Reality warping and Insta-Shields could negate much of Kasen’s danmaku or ranged attacks

  • Could possibly resist the Raijuu’s poison, at least for a while, as well as resist or escape any attempts at sealing, and could even resist an insta loss from fear manipulation

  • Insta-Shields, Forcefields, and Wind/Air Redirection could allow him to redirect or block many of Kasen’s ranged options

  • Vibration manipulation would allow him to escape any sort of bandage binding

  • Comparable combat skill…

  • Is an LGBT ally (based)

  • Grew and changed as a person & now treats Tails like a true little brother (heartwarming)

  • His comic got an actual ending by it's original writers, unlike Archie ):

Disadvantages:

  • Base Form is AP stomped badly

  • Super Sonic (and Hyper) are weaker than Base and Oni Kasen, with both finite and infinite ends

  • Is slower with finite ends

  • Super Sonic is unlikely to ever use any of his more notable haxx because of his own personality, and would never lead with any Chaos Abilities besides eye lasers

  • Has no resistances to soul haxx, making him vulnerable to perma-death by Kasen’s numerous soul based attacks

  • Has no resistance to possession, and no way to counteract Fortune

  • … though outclassed in sheer experience and training

  • Less likely to land the killing blow first

  • God Robotnik is carrying blud’s haxx list on his fucking back

  • The novels make him job out in really funny ways (bro folded to a net weighted with copper bruh) ((unbased))

Kasen Ibaraki:

(Edit by Twice!)

“I've always been looking for my arm. But not the unsealed arm, or the living arm that moves on its own. What I wanted was what's in this box, my dried up mummified arm. To keep it right beside me, like my own death. To take both opposing paths to their extremes. For that itself, is the way of the Hermit.”

Advantages:

  • AP stomps Base Sonic badly, and is still significantly stronger than any of his forms, finite or infinite ends

  • Equal speed with infinite ends, faster with finite ends

  • Soul Manipulation & Destruction would allow her multiple ways to instantly kill Sonic and bypass Super Sonic’s regen, killing him

  • Regen and resistances prevents her from being killed by nearly all of Sonic’s arsenal

  • Can likely resist Sonic’s reality warping and matter manipulation…

  • Oni Physiology & nature would make her resistant to Kintobor’s analysis

  • Comparable combat skill, and is significantly older and much more experienced

  • Fortune’s fate and probability altering abilities would be a major advantage

  • More likely to land the killing blow first

  • Fortune and the Ibaraki Box of Medicine would allow for her to work-around having her power nullified…

  • HOUSO-SAMA THE GOAAAAAAAAT

  • Kind of a MILF. (Reblog)

  • Homoerotic Yuri (based)

Breakdown:

The new additions from the novels and STCO have made this match nothing if not more complex, so let's break things down bit by bit, starting with the stats!

Stats:

To be blunt, no matter which end is used, Kasen is going to end up monstrously stronger than Sonic. Starting with their finite ends, Sonic’s best potential finite numbers would be the statement from Agent Orange about having devices that can access upwards of 5 Million dimensions, and the Chaos Wave’s complete rewriting of all reality would mean he’d be able to destroy and affect all of that, putting him firmly into the Multiversal range. However, the sheer massive scope of Heaven within Touhou completely and utterly dwarfs this. Due to Amitabha’s size, a single Heaven would have to be 108,717 Centillion times the size of our universe! To put it into perspective, Kasen would simply be 21.74 Novemnonagintillion times more powerful than Sonic. Using infinite ends, the Chaos Wave would have annihilated the Fourth Dimension and Cyberspace, both of which are stated to be infinite in size, comparing it to Heaven yet again though, it still falls short. Using the higher ends for the size of the Heavens, would mean that at minimum there’s about 8 Million Infinite realms contained within, possibly even a countless amount, once again, edging out Sonic by a ludicrous degree. Finally, there’s the higher dimensional ends. Taking STCs cosmology to its biggest, the Fourth Dimension at its highest interpretations, could be read as being an infinite Fourth Dimensional space containing a temporal dimension, or outright being a hyper timeline, with either reading planting it firmly as 5D. Touhou’s cosmology however, is just far larger in scope. Scaling to things such as dream creation and destruction, or Yukari or Remilia’s complete cosmology wipes, which would affect the Outside World, a 5D construct which views Gensokyo as fictional, the 6D Sanzu River, which acts as a hyper timeline encompassing space and time across all Otherworlds, including infinite realms and the Outside World, or the 7D Dream World, Touhou is simply on a much higher level of cosmology scope, and can be argued even further! In short, Sonic is simply outclassed in terms of strength no matter which route you take.

However, speed is a rather different debate. Using finite ends, both have an assortment of relativistic feats, though Kasen having more FTL ones, as well as a variety of MFTL+ feats. Using their highest finite numbers however, Kasen has Sonic beaten out, as while Santa’s feat being possibly 876 Nonillion times faster than light is batshit insane, Suika’s destruction of Heaven would get 223.5 Octotrigintillion times faster than light, a gap so obscenely large it's unbelievable. Finite values aren’t the end all be all however, as both these fighters bring a multitude of incalculable feats to the table! Kasen scaling to several of Reimu and Marisa’s feats of crossing infinitely sized realms such as the Sanzu River, Kaguya’s Infinite Corridor, or catching up to the Palanquin Ship, which could cross the infinite realm of Makai, as well as scaling to Sakuya compressing an entire timeline would give her some very solid incalculable speeds, Sonic can actually keep up just as well! In one of the flat out rawest speed feats in all of fiction, Sonic was capable of outrunning the Chaos Wave, which was not only going to consume all of the Fourth Dimension, a dimension of infinite size, but was also ripping through all points in time and history, effectively outrunning the rewriting of time and history itself, an absurdly blatant incalculable speed feat, and one he did in base form! Shockingly, this makes Sonic able to pretty easily match Kasen’s highest ends in speed, making them equal in speed!

Equipment, Abilities & Haxx:

In a matchup like this though, stats aren’t the only things that matter, and the ability tradeoff was truly the most ridiculous part of this match. One thing to get out of the way first, is both fighters’ regen. Both fighters have extremely solid regeneration, Kasen’s mid-godly spiritual regen and Super Sonic’s low godly energy regen, means that physical destruction isn’t the end all be all for securing a win in a match like this, which means this fight is largely going to come down to one anothers’ respective abilities, of which both have a lot! So let's break this down character by character, comparing Sonic’s abilities against Kasen, and then Kasen’s against Sonic!

Sonic’s Abilities:

First off, both fighters are acausal, meaning that any timey wimey bullshit isn’t gonna have much of an effect on the other, which instantly takes Super Sonic’s history alteration or time travel off the table as viable wincons, as the Kasen of the present would still be completely unaffected by anything he could try to do in the past. Kasen’s immortality and physiology would also make her unaffected by any attempts to age her to death.

Something interesting would be if the Kintobor Computer would be able to give Sonic a leg up in the fight, as his analytical abilities could potentially allow Sonic to evade Kasen for long enough to learn about her, and possibly even make a form of counteraction. However, this wouldn’t be possible, due to the inherent physiology and nature of oni. Oni and their tools are unfathomable beings, who live and thrive off of being incomprehensible, and their magic being near impossible to decipher. Only one character has ever made any headway on learning about Oni tools and magic, and that’s Marisa Kirisame (my wife (: ) a verifiable genius in the field of magic and the occult, and even then, it took her an extensive period of researching and experimentation across nearly a full week to even learn how the hidden power of Oni worked, and to even partially understand how a single Oni tool worked, and eventually learn how to recognize Oni magic on sight. While something as intelligent and impressive as the Kintobor Computer COULD theoretically get some handle on what Kasen is or how her abilities or tools work, it would simply take far, far too long, and definitely wouldn’t occur within the span of a fight.

Transmutation would be completely ineffective on Kasen as well, seeing as she was able to survive in Hell completely unscathed for an extended period of time, despite the fact that Hell purifies one's soul into crystal while they’re there, and seeing as Kasen is a spiritual being entirely, she should be entirely resistant to any sort of transmutation attempts. Even if she weren’t, youkai are effective shapeshifters, and she could likely transform into mist and reconstitute herself in her regular form.

Size manipulation is a similar case, while Kasen has no shown instances of resisting size manipulation, meaning that Super Sonic shrinking Kasen to subatomic sizes could potentially work on her, youkai being able to freely change their shape and form as they wish likely means she could just reconstitute herself in the off chance she does get shrunk.

While Sonic and Super Sonic have shown to be capable of absorbing Chaos Energy plenty, they don’t have any instances of absorbing other forms of energy that could pose any reasonable danger to Kasen or her abilities. Even if one were to stretch and say that somehow, Chaos Energy and Spirit were analogous, and that Sonic could absorb Kasen or absorb her spiritual energy to some capacity, Kasen and other youkai are frequently able to regenerate from spiritual harm, and have even recovered from Tenshi’s spiritual absorption in SWR.

Going intangible? Kasen’s NPI allows her to hit intangible entities just fine. Heat manipulation? Youkai are unaffected from the effects of heat stroke, and oni regularly bathe in magma just fine, meaning Kasen would largely be able to endure it. Telekinesis? Kasen’s greater AP would allow her to break out of any telekinetic hold Sonic could try to put on her. Sonic’s duplication however, could pose a potential issue to Kasen, as it could give him a notable numbers advantage on her should he take advantage of it and should Kasen not put down his clones fast enough. Mind control? Youkai such as Kasen are completely unaffected by the True Moon, which casts hypnotic waves that can control the minds of humans.

Power nullification is an interesting case, as while Kasen actually has no inherent resistance to having her power nullified, meaning that she could actually have her abilities largely nullified, which would put her in a bad spot! However, Kasen does have workarounds. Her Ibaraki Box of Medicine would allow her to restore her health and even restore the level of strength of an oni back to her. On top of that, Kasen would still have access to Fortune, which would allow her to still cast her spells and use magic despite lacking any of the other necessary tenants of magic due to being nullified.

Super Sonic’s reality warping is where things get interesting though. While definitely a more potent option, it's unlikely it on its own would be able to affect Kasen either. Seeing as she, as well as all other youkai in Gensokyo, would have survived the effects of Remilia’s concept erasing Scarlet Mist, any attempt to rewrite or erase her from reality would likely be ineffective. What about if Sonic tried to warp her into something else, manipulating her matter or changing her form in some way? Well, the inherent physiology of youkai means they’re composed of entirely different particles than what's scientifically known, making it questionable if Sonic would really be able to manipulate her matter in the first place. Warping Kasen’s form would likely run into similar issues, as after entering Gensokyo, Kasen became unbound from their prior form of existence, where their forms and characteristics could be decided and changed by the belief of others. This likely means that, any change Sonic may try to impose upon her reality, she could simply undo, making his reality warping largely ineffective against her.

However, most dangerous of all, would be Chaos Energy’s ability to warp, rewrite, and corrupt information itself. The Chaos Wave, in its destruction of all reality, would have affected Cyberspace, which means that it can warp and affect things down to the very information of things. While arguments exist for a resistance or the ability to regenerate information within Touhou, there’s nothing that could be argued to allow Kasen to survive something on the level of having her very information corrupted or warped to a degree of what the Chaos Wave would have been capable of. If she wouldn’t be outright killed by this, she would certainly be warped into something that would no longer BE Kasen anymore just through sheer corruption of her very information, giving Sonic an extremely solid win condition!

Kasen’s Abilities:

To start off, Sonic’s mental resistances are far too good for Kasen’s guiding of animals to be able to hold any sort of affect over him. Anything she could try he would just be able to resist or ignore. This would likely extend to Avici as well, he would likely be able to resist the effects of Avici “trapping” his mind, considering he was able to break out of Robotnik’s Brain Drain Machine, which has relatively similar effects of convincing your mind you’re in a completely different reality and a completely different person. Kasen could also theoretically manipulate and erase Sonic’s memories, but if she ever utters her name mindlessly his memories would likely come back to him just as quickly.

Kasen’s methods of sealing would also likely be largely ineffective as well. Considering base Sonic has been able to break out of sealing such as the Omni-Viewer’s through sheer force, or his Mobius Rings/Super Sonic’s abilities allowing him to teleport out of something like her Senkai. Even with the more complicated sealing arguments, like Kasen trapping Sonic within Hell, which wont let someone leave via their own power, could be circumnavigated by simply destroying all of Hell. In terms of cosmology, Hell is on the lower rungs of things, being a collection of infinitely sized realms, which would place it within the range of power that Super Sonic could, to be frank, just blow it all up or warp it all via the Emeralds’ powers, allowing him to escape.

Kasen’s wind tornados could be counteracted by Sonic’s own, both have enhanced senses to the point of sensing spatial disruptions, both have methods of traveling dimensions, making BFR a relatively unhelpful option, and both have hilariously potent instances of fourth wall breaking that likely wouldn’t give one an advantage over the other. They equal out in a lot of ways.

However, Kasen’s arsenal happens to pick a few holes in Sonic’s that he doesn’t quite have methods to counteract. Notably, Sonic doesn’t have a counter to possession of any sort, meaning Perfect Possession’s takeover of the body and mind would likely allow Kasen to take control of Sonic’s body, even if she couldn’t subjugate his mind, which could leave him, or any potential duplicates he makes, vulnerable. Kasen’s Fortune would also be a major advantage in the fight, as the ability to manipulate fate and probability in your favor inherently will help any situation magically find a way to tilt itself in Kasen’s favor

Kasen’s biggest advantage in this fight however, would be her potent soul manipulating abilities. Sonic has no showcased resistance to spiritual manipulation of any kind, this leaves him completely open to any form of spiritual attack, which Touhou characters specialize in. Kasen’s Spirit Manipulation could allow her to gradually sap Sonic of his spirit through her attacks over the length of the battle, should his body be destroyed in any way, she’d have a clear line of attack on his soul to destroy it, and most notable, is that she could flat out just remove his soul from his body at any point she’d like, leaving it completely vulnerable to attack, being sealed, or outright destroyed. Kasen’s Artificial Arm in particular is a potent tool in this fight, as if Sonic/Super Sonic’s soul were to be crushed by it, not only would he be killed, his soul would be removed from the reincarnation cycle completely, killing him permanently and preventing any sort of resurrection or regeneration.

All in all, Kasen’s spirit/soul manipulating abilities grant her a variety of potent wincons in this match, and Perfect Possession and Fortune give her a few other notable legs up in the ability tradeoff that Sonic doesn’t quite have an answer to.

Tertiary Factors:

Kasen and Sonic are both shockingly intelligent and perceptive individuals, both have fought a wide variety of opponents across their lives, Sonic fighting a wide rogues gallery of 90s comic villains, and Kasen throwing hands with much of Gensokyo’s whacky roster of superpowered youkai, humans and gods. To be frank, through sheer combat capabilities, they’re likely relatively comparable. However, Kasen does have a massive advantage in one spot, and that would be sheer experience. Kasen is simply centuries older than Sonic himself is, with it known that her arm was sliced off and sealed away over a thousand years ago, meaning she’s likely even older than that. After having her arm sealed though, she would proceed to spend the next several centuries training in the arts of the Hermit, constantly studying and training to improve herself, and accumulating an absurd amount of info about the world, the things that live within it, and how they work. While Sonic is by no means a slouch in this category, Kasen has simply been around far longer, seen far more, and had more time to learn, giving her a major experience advantage, despite how relative their respective combat skill can be argued.

There’s some various other factors that we could cover as well to be more comprehensive as well. Super Sonic’s “time limit” wouldn’t really apply or be of a concern in this fight. Super Sonic’s been able to sustain himself for months even with a complete and utter lack of energy, and in the bad future of the timeline even stayed as Super Sonic for 70+ years and brought about the end of the world. It's unlikely that he would flat out run out of Chaos Energy and die during the duration of this fight.

Kasen’s greater AP, while not a deciding factor, would give her a bit of an advantage in the long term, in that she’d be more easily able to destroy Super Sonic’s body to access his soul or energy, and then directly destroy that to kill him for good. Sonic also technically lacks any showcases of NPI on any of his physical attacks, making it questionable how effective many of his means of attack would be on Kasen in the first place.

While Kasen’s regen is technically “superior” to Sonic’s, being spiritual rather than complete physical from energy, it’s not too big of an advantage seeing as both have methods capable of bypassing the other’s regen for a permanent kill regardless.

While both are equal in speed, Sonic is admittedly, far more “skilled” at using his speed in combat. While Kasen’s fast and effective in combat, Sonic’s speed is one of his main methods of combat and is what he uses to help control the flow of battle, and his speed can generally be used in many more ways to help him out, such as afterimage creation to disorientate Kasen or creating vortexes strong enough to redirect her attacks.

Kasen also has a notable advantage in that she’s liable in holding most advantages no matter she’s Kasen, Ibaraki-Douji, or Deva Kasen, as she’ll still have all her wincons accessible to her at any point, and will only become more violent and willing to kill with her more evil stages. Sonic meanwhile, doesn’t directly have a way to kill her in base form, unless we’re generous in assuming Merged Sonic does carry all the abilities of his Chaos Energy laden self. Super Sonic would be the only combatant with a notable win condition here.

Conclusion:

So effectively, that leaves both fighters with a handful of ways to interfere with the opponent, and one main, solid way to permanently kill the other. Kasen destroying Sonic’s soul, or Sonic warping/corrupting/rewriting Kasen’s very information, bypassing her regeneration and killing her. Seeing as speed is equal, a blitz isn’t an option, meaning that it ultimately comes down to tertiary factors, who is most likely to go for their main wincon first, and most likely, it would be Kasen.

One thing I’d like to dispel, is that Super Sonic isn’t a complete idiot. While he may have started that way in early STC when he was largely little more than a bruiser, as the comic has gone on, Super Sonic adapted and grew, becoming more intelligent, and even beginning to employ strategy and learn new applications of Chaos Energy, honestly becoming rather perceptive, able to use the lengthy time he would spend while stuck within Sonic planning a rather well executed revenge against Sonic’s friends. However, while he isn’t an idiot, he certainly is flawed, and that’s where Super Sonic’s biggest disadvantage comes from, his own damn personality.

Super Sonic is a violent, sadistic maniac, who takes eager glee in physically dismantling and taking his time with his opponents. Frequently, he’s even become victim to the Bill Cipher Effect™, of hardcore tunnel visioning on one thing, whether it be killing someone or obtaining further power, that he loses sight of more minor factors which proceeds to result in his downfall, to be frank, this results in his defeat in basically all of his appearances.

While it's likely that, after long enough of fighting Kasen, he’d realize that his normal strategies aren’t going to work, and he’ll have to try using some other powers. However, even having that timeframe of a wait is all the time Kasen would need to secure her victory. Kasen has shown herself much more willing to go for a kill, or use her soul manipulation abilities against someone, as even ignoring Ibaraki-Douji’s massive body count, one of the first things she did against Reimu after a brief scuffle was hit her with an attack that tore her soul out of her body, before banishing her to Avici. Kasen herself has also regularly destroyed the souls of vengeful spirits she’s come across without much hesitation. In a fight to the death against something as monstrous as Super Sonic, and likely even being able to see a bit of her own demons within Super Sonic, she’d be unlikely to hesitate in putting down such a monster as quickly as possible.

I’d be remiss not to mention that, technically, in a Reverse Bill Cipher Moment™, Super Sonic has never actually been in a battle against an opponent on his level before, and thus, we don’t have a general idea of how he would react in such a situation. But seeing as we can’t hypothesize about something that’s never happened, we simply have to go off of what he regularly gets up to, and as is, he’d be too unlikely to go for the necessary wincon before Kasen. It should also be noted that, Super Sonic’s main wincon of warping Kasen, while completely viable and something he should be capable of, is flat out an ability that Super Sonic has never once used, or ever considered using in canon, compared to Kasen who regularly deals with things on a spiritual level and frequently takes advantage of her soul manipulation abilities. Kasen being the one to take advantage of one of her main capabilities before Super Sonic would go for a random technique he’s never actually used, and would be questionably in character for him, would be rather unlikely.

So, while it is possible that in some versions of this fight, Sonic does go for his win condition quickly enough to kill Kasen permanently, more often than not, Kasen would be faster on the draw. Add that on top of having superior AP, equal speed, resisting the vast majority of his abilities, and having a handful of haxxes he has no direct counter to, and Kasen happens to have all the tools she needs to finally help Sonic put down his demon. It might’ve been a batshit insane debate, and Sonic put up a fight for the fucking ages, but I think I can safely say that, once again…

…The winner is Kasen Ibaraki!

Afterword:

First and foremost, I’d like to thank a few people who assisted in the creation of this blog. Without their help, it likely wouldn’t have come out on as good a timeframe as it did, and might have even missed some important things.

First off, I want to give a huge thanks to Mad Dog of Fujiwara. Fuji’s been my Touhou research partner in crime for the past couple years, and honestly in places her knowledge might even eclipse mine. While this blog was largely a solo effort, she helped directly write some of the Touhou Cosmology section, as well as fill in some details for Kasen’s intelligence/exp/skill section, youkai physiology info, as well as help with sourcing her abilities! Without her help this blog might have missed it's deadline, and on the whole, lord knows where Touhou research would be at this point lol.

I’d also like to thank Rina Antiqua, who was a massive help in calculating various feats within this blog. Due to my woefully weak calcing abilities, I had to rely heavily on her help with getting solid numbers on various feats in these rather under researched verses. Without her help we wouldn’t have gotten the fuck massive number for Heaven’s size, for instance, as well as the variety of feats for both verses she’s helped calculate. If I didn’t shout for Rina-Chan to save me so many times, who knows where we’d be.

I’d also like to give a huge thanks to Twice, who helped make the image edits used in the Media Guides, as well as interspersed throughout this blog, it helped a ton with giving something nice visually to the blog here and there and really making it something special! They all look incredible and I absolutely can’t thank you enough for the help man (:

ShakeResounding and KousokuSonikku were also both big helps when it came to discussing and verifying information on the Fleetway side of things, SimplyShake especially helping me build the arguments for Cyberspace’s info manipulation and the Fourth Dimension’s higher dimensional arguments (we might try and push an upgrade on VSBW soon, we’ll see). Ishi_Yuki also gave some helpful feedback for Sonic as well.

Greymerlion2 and Pasbros also deserve thanks, who gave their input on various feats and points of discussion as I did my research, and were generally just helpful for me to spitball ideas off of. Grey has also requested that anyone reading watch Owl House, if they haven’t yet, and PasBros, to be a little contrarian, said to watch Amphibia. I’d also like to thank Mafurara, who did the little Benadryl Knuckles doodle seen in this blog, for taking such a silly comm on such short notice. I’ll also give thanks to Ultraguy.EXE, for being the big kick in the ass to finally finish this blog on time, as I thought it would be funny to have two KaSonic blogs available around the same time to see where they differ. Definitely check Ultra’s KaSonic blog out as soon as it's released as well! It should drop within a couple days of mine releasing.

Lastly, I’d like to thank all of YOU, yes that’s right, YOU, the readers! I’d like to thank you all for your continued interest in this matchup, as well as both verses as a whole, many people seemed rather interested in the idea of a full analysis for both, and so I decided to deliver! I hope that my goal of providing the ultimate resource on Fleetway in versus, as well as an extremely thorough, yet comprehensive coverage on Touhou in versus was achieved!

Not to mention, your support and help pushing this matchup has helped immensely in getting it more popular, to the point that it even managed to reach the Death Battle Season 10 Tournament of Champions’ first round, and managed to hold its own against some really steep competition! All I ask is that you all continue to help push for this matchup, as it's become a real, viable possibility to finally happen in Death Battle!!! Don’t stop pushing for it and letting the team know you want to see this episode happen someday, and it really could happen!!!

By the way, Remember in the first blog when I said “if I had to say a sentence such as “In page 127 of the 2nd Sonic Virgin Book” when listing off a feat, I think I would actually have to kill myself.”. I was fucking joking. I didn’t actually know the 2nd book would actually be the one hiding a motherfucking immeasurable speed and Multi - 5D feat bruh I just made that shit up on the spot for a joke. Apollo please stop giving me the gift of prophecy!!!!

In the meantime, my currently planned next blogs are still in production, expect the Mario Cosmology Blog to be next, ideally rather soon, as it's pretty far along as is, and sometime within Q1 2024 I want to get Mario vs Sonic out!!! I have a variety of plans alongside that, with many collab blogs likely able to make good progress once this blog releases and my free time opens up. I hope you all enjoyed it, please give feedback on the blog, let me know if you liked the new formatting I tried (I’m mostly ripping off G1 lol) as well as what you’d like to see from me!

See you all next time!

Edit 1 (1/13/2024): Adjusted credits. Fixed small errors. Added “Heaven is How Fucking Big?:” to the BTV section, fixed “Does Kasen Scale High Without Deva”.
