Kasen Ibaraki vs Fleetway Sonic the Hedgehog [2022] (Touhou Project vs Fleetway Publications / SEGA), Matchup Breakdown & Analysis

"Good and evil, there never is one without the other." Merlin, Excalibur

Kasen Ibaraki, the Wild and Horned self proclaimed “Hermit” Sage of the Touhou Project!

Sonic the Hedgehog, the Blue Bomber and Hero of Mobius from Fleetway Publications’ Sonic the Comic!

While these two monoliths of East and West may seem to be as far removed from one another as conceivably possible, these nature loving heroes have more in common than one would ever think. Within these two lie demons of incredible malice that they fight to stop on the regular, these struggles going on to define how they live their lives, pervade their entire stories, and hang over them like their own deaths, but despite it all, they face these parts of themselves head on and with full confidence.

Get ready for some fun folks, as not only is Touhou an absolutely batshit series, but so is Fleetway Sonic. Fleetway isn’t just any iteration of the Sonic Universe, no, it's not only one of the most wildly different interpretations of our favorite blue blur, it's also one of the most batshit insane. This is the same comic where Super Sonic is a homicidal maniac, Robotnik encases himself in an egg just to hatch later to change his appearance, Knuckles watches a man die in a stampede before riding away on a pterodactyl, Tails is a fucking moron for 90% of the comic, Amy is a dimension-hopping crossbow-weilding tomboy badass, where Santa Claus is a canonical character and also a powerful magical wizard, and where Metal Sonic is called Metallix and creates a robot uprising with his brothers called The Brotherhood of Metallix that try to erase Robotnik from time. Yeah, we’re in for some fun.

Kasen and Sonic are two formidable foes….

….but between the two, who will come out top in a DEATH BATTLE?

(Renders & Sprite edits throughout the blog not in the tributes section are by Origin the Hero!)

Preliminary Info:

This blog will be covering only the main canon of the Fleetway Sonic Comics, so the obvious limitations of not receiving any content from the games, Archie Comics, IDW Comics, Paramount movies, or any other major continuities of Sonic are in full effect. It’s also worth noting that any content from the fan continuation Sonic the Comic Online will not be used in this blog. While it has received praise and admonishment from one of the official main writers of the Comic, it’s not an official, canon product to the story of Fleetway, and will thus not be taken into consideration (I hear it's really good though you should check it out). Materials from the four Sonic novels produced by Virgin Publishing (yes it’s actually named that) will not be taken into account either, despite their close similarities to early Sonic the Comic, even utilizing a similar backstory and utilizing many Fleetway Original characters, they are ultimately made by an entirely different publication with no statements on their connection to Fleetway’s Comics. The secondary reason is that if I had to say a sentence such as “In page 127 of the 2nd Sonic Virgin Book” when listing off a feat, I think I would actually have to kill myself.

For similar reasons as above, the two part comic EXIT:SONIC, a comic taking place far into the future of the Sonic the Comic Online storyline, will also not be factored into this blog. These two issues need to be acknowledged separately, as they had official writers and artists from the comic, Nigel Kitching, Nigel Dobbyn, and Michael Corker reprise writing & drawing a STC story for the first time in over a decade, all of them having worked on the Fleetway Continuity for several years each. It’s essentially a final goodbye to the series, allowing them all to close the book of their work on Sonic on their own terms, due to them never getting the proper chance themselves due to the comic’s sudden cancellation at Issue #184. Despite all of that, it is not an officially licensed product within Fleetway Publications, ultimately being a fan work by previous writers on the comic, that has the attached baggage of the story elements introduced by Sonic the Comic Online, as well as introducing some new elements that were never discussed in the original Comics, such as aspects about Super Sonic’s personality, and new mechanics revolving around the Chaos Emeralds, and thus likely should not be used. It is a truly sweet sendoff to the Comic however, that I’d highly recommend reading over if you’re a fan of Fleetway’s Sonic.

Also of note, while Sonic the Comic mentions on a few occasions that the events of Sonic 1 and 2 occurred, meaning that Fleetway Sonic has definitely experienced a version of the events of both games, due to various differences such as his story for meeting Tails being different, and Super Sonic playing a completely different role, they definitely occurred a little differently than they did in the games, meaning I’ll generally be excluding them from this analysis. Not that anything from either game would add too much to the analysis, though.

Basically, Fleetway Sonic is just getting Issues #1-184 (185-223 were just reprints of previous issues with new covers, nothing new here to my knowledge), any relevant Sonic the Poster Mag issues, and the various specials the series accumulated, official canon materials only.

Touhou has no major notable restrictions that need to be gone over in regards to research in this blog, and will generally be using the same standards in my Marisa Kirisame vs Yuffie Kisaragi blog. PC-98 contents can be included so long as the information doesn’t contradict the Windows main canon, and any feats, abilities, and scaling from the Seihou Project crossover are prohibited. Not that Kasen really gets anything from either of those things, besides maybe scaling, though.

I will also be emphasizing that I will feel absolutely no shame if I use a few ability descriptions for Touhou word for word from VSBW, because either I or Fujiwara likely had those descriptions put there in the first place (:<

Connections:

You might be wondering, what in the blue hell does the British Sonic have to do with anything from Touhou? Well, these two characters are surprisingly thematic.

Also fuck you Sonic and Touhou are cool as fuck.

  • In base forms, both are heavily associated with nature/being protectors of it (Sonic being the hero of Mobius and protector of its natural inhabitants, Kasen being one of the creators of Gensokyo, and a hermit who has a several animals as a pet, such as a tiger, raijuu, dragon, and eagle, and considers guiding the animals of the mountain down the right path to be her duty)

  • Both have somewhat poor reputations with attitude (Sonic generally being seen as an asshole despite his heroism, and Kasen being found annoying by many due to her preachiness and lecturing)

  • They both withhold evil alternate personalities that they try to suppress or stop (Oni Kasen being Kasen’s personality back when she was a violent, malice-filled, warmongering Oni which was sealed in her arm, and Super Sonic being a psychopathic alter ego created by negative chaos energy, which is activated when he’s stressed or absorbs chaos energy)

  • Their evil personalities are are only released when they reach their strongest form (in Kasen's case, regaining her full oni body, in Fleetway's, being charged up on Chaos Energy or stressed out)

  • A large chunk of their story predicate around trying to repress or stop their alter ego from taking over and wreaking havoc (Sonic trying to either withhold or find a way to seal or kill Super Sonic, and Kasen weaving a plan to seal her evil arm away for good by training Reimu to be prepared to seal her evil arm again)

  • Both are aided in accomplishing their goal of stopping their evil half by another person versed in mystical arts (Ebony re-fuses Sonic and Super Sonic in the final issue of Fleetway, while Kasen entrusts Reimu with a piece of the blade required to slice off her evil arm and seal it away to prevent it from taking her over again)

  • Both resolve their issue by keeping their evil half close to heart (Sonic resolves his evil half issue by rejoining with him permanently and having to prevent Super Sonic from emerging, while Kasen forces out her evil half by having said the arm imbued with said personality removed from her body and re-sealed away completely, where she now keeps it in her home.)

  • Both have associations with a special alternate universe (Kasen's Senkai and the Special Zone)

Tldr; Protagonists associated with nature who withhold an alternate psychotic, violent, murderous personality in their strongest form, who spend most of their story trying to suppress or stop said half. Pretty solid connections with the neat contrasts of their base personalities being vastly different, while their psychotic halves are rather similar, and both originating from Eastern & Western properties/publications, manga and comics.

Now that all the preliminary info is out of the way, let's get to the matchup itself! Starting with…

Fleetway Sonic:

“What a life! Never a dull moment... And that's the way I like it!

The world of Fleetway Sonic is one wildly different from most iterations of the Blue Blur. Living as a denizen of Green Hill Zone, Sonic the Hedgehog was a brown, quilly hedgehog just like any other, but with one notable tenet, he was the fastest hedgehog in all of Mobius. One day while out exploring, he came across a brilliant scientist named Dr. Ivo Kintobor. Kintobor wished for nothing but the world to be rid of all evil, and had been collecting the Chaos Emeralds in order to absorb all the world’s evil to create a world of peace, after collecting 6 out of 7 and building a machine that effectively absorbed most of the evil in the world, he struggles to find the 7th. Upon meeting Sonic, the two formed a friendship and mutual agreement. Sonic would use his incredible super speed not only to search for the 7th Chaos Emerald, but he would also help Kintobor perform various experiments, and in the process, Sonic would not only learn how to run faster, but would be provided with friction reducing running shoes to allow him to move even faster.

On the first ever experiment utilizing the friction-reducing Power Sneakers Kintobor gifted him, Sonic would break the sound barrier, blowing up the treadmill he was running on in the process. This accident would result in Sonic’s visage completely changing, with his quills being fused together into larger, sharper ones, and his fur being changed to a blue color, giving him his iconic blue blur appearance. After this accident, the two would continue working together in their mutual goal, until finally, yet another accident would occur, this one much more disastrous. Kintobor would accidentally trip while holding a rotten egg, destroying one of his machines in the process, causing an explosion and the 6 Chaos Emeralds overloaded with all the world’s evil to release massive blasts of emerald radiation filled with said evil, all of that fusing with Kintobor. This mixture of absolutely baffling events would lead to Kintobor being transformed into the diabolical Dr. Ivo Robotnik (I am being 100% fucking serious).

From here, Robotnik would begin his conquest to conquer the entirety of Mobius, searching for the Chaos Emeralds to obtain ultimate power, and Sonic would stage his rebellion against the doctor, beating him back and defeating him time and time again. Sonic’s rebellion would begin to form a group of Freedom Fighters, including Porker Lewis, Johnny Lightfoot, and even an uploaded version of Kintobor’s consciousness onto a computer. Eventually, Sonic would obtain all 6 currently known Chaos Emeralds, while he was in the process of hiding them away, he would be blasted with a full blast of radiation from the emeralds, giving him a potent dose of negative Chaos Energy.

This incident would result in the creation of a significantly more powerful, psychopathic, bloodlusted alter ego within Sonic, his super form, Super Sonic. Super Sonic would go on to become a massive issue and huge struggle for Sonic throughout the entire series, becoming a demon within that he would have to try his best to control. If at any point he were to become overly stressed, enraged, or pushed into a corner, he would be converted to his Super Form against his will, though this form could also be accessed willingly if he absorbs a large dose of Chaos Energy.

During his many battles against Robotnik for the freedom of Mobius, he would end up coming into contact with the power of the Complete Chaos Emeralds on the Floating Island, absorbing a massive amount of radiation from the emeralds, making Super Sonic even more powerful and run completely wild. After he nearly kills all his friends, they create a plan and work together to pull all the emerald radiation and Chaos Energy out of Sonic, launching the energy into the Special Zone through a Star Post. While the plan works, it doesn’t get rid of Super Sonic, in fact, it just allows him to create his own physical form of pure Chaos Energy, and he becomes an even larger threat now that he’s free of Sonic’s body.

After tracking down Super Sonic and engaging in a battle that eventually ends with Super Sonic being stuck within the Omni-Viewer, they finally seem to imprison him, having him be stuck in nearly slowed time for months. However, he eventually breaks out of his imprisonment with a planetary electromagnetic explosion, and comes down to Mobius to finish the job he started, but… his energy begins draining out of him and begins reacting in strange ways, the months he spent separated from Sonic and the act of releasing the explosion having created a strange effect on his body. He soon finds himself with amnesia, unable to remember who he is, and bouncing from home to home, trying to find out the secret of his past and carve out a life for himself, while Sonic continues to fight for the sake of Mobius, unaware of Super Sonic’s current state.

Eventually though, Super Sonic would have his memories restored, and after finding out that he used to be the equivalent of a demon sent straight from Hell, he tries to turn a new leaf, and live the rest of his life as a pacifist, enlisting the help of a sorcerer known as Ebony, working at her shop and becoming good friends with her. Due to having spent several months without any connection to Chaos Energy, his physical form is beginning to die, and he realizes that he has to find a source of Chaos Energy to absorb. This results in him and Ebony traveling the planet in search of a powerful Chaos Energy source, which leads them to Sonic and his friends trying to battle against Perfect Chaos, who had absorbed all of the Chaos Emeralds and was about to destroy the world. Realizing the gravity of the situation, Super Sonic jumps into Chaos, absorbing all of his energy and destroying the monster.

But the act of recharging himself changes something within him, driving him mad yet again, bringing him back to his psychotic personality before he had amnesia, making him a threat to the universe yet again. Sonic, realizing there’s only one true way to prevent Super Sonic from rampaging again, has Ebony use her magic to fuse him and Super Sonic back together, forcing himself back into control of the main body. Finally having recontained Super Sonic, Sonic sets out with the rest of his Freedom Fighting allies to continue the fight to protect Mobius from any and all threats, with Sonic having to live with the knowledge that he contains the ultimate chaos within, and that he must never let it out again, but should Super Sonic be released again, he has faith that he and his friends will be able to deal with it, like they always have done.

Kasen Ibaraki:

“My ideals exist alongside the laws of heaven!”

Hundreds of years in the past, there lived an incredibly fearsome and powerful oni, known as Ibaraki-Douji. One of the Big Four of the Mountain, alongside Suika Ibuki, Yuugi Hoshiguma, and another unknown member, she was one of the most powerful and respected Youkai of all, operating their base within Mt. Ooe. At some point, they would break into a rampage onto Kyoto, causing mass havoc. However, at some point during this rampage, Ibaraki-Douji would be fought off by a powerful warrior weiling the Onikirimaru, a powerful youkai blade capable of sealing away even the most resilient youkai. Using this blade, the warrior would sever her right arm, sealing all her malice and hatred within the arm, before taking the arm as a trophy and sealing it away within a protective box.

The Oni once known as Ibaraki-Douji, after losing all her malice, would find herself rapidly losing interest in the hellish reality she remains within, and would decide to pursue another world, a better world. She would disguise her Oni heritage and her previous life as a Deva, adopting the lifestyle and appearance of a Hermit, in order to pursue the path to Heaven, and in doing so, would take upon her new name, Kasen Ibaraki. With all of her malice removed, she would end up becoming an incredibly compassionate, and emotionally vulnerable person, who’d try to help others wherever given the opportunity while following her path as a Hermit. During the path she followed in her new self-created life, she would find herself becoming acquaintances with Yukari Yakumo and Okina Matara, a powerful Gap Youkai and God respectively, forming the group known as the Sages of Gensokyo. Together alongside them and the great Dragon God, would create the realm known as Gensokyo, a land of fantasy, and paradise for all who come to find it, whether they be Youkai, Gods, humans, animals, forgotten beings or those who were never accepted elsewhere. The land became sealed off from the outside world in 1885 A.D.

Kasen would continue her hermit lifestyle within Gensokyo, hiding her life as an Oni and even her position as a Sage of Gensokyo from all within, eventually becoming known as a “mountain hermit” at some point in 1980. All the while, she would occasionally leave Gensokyo for the Outside World in search of her severed arm, as Kasen was well aware of the power and malice withheld within the arm, and she knew that one day, the seal would weaken enough for her other half to escape, and wreak havoc upon the world. Eventually, after centuries, she would finally find the box her arm was sealed with, up for display at a run down old temple, its seal already immensely weakened. Realizing the gravity of this situation, and after failing to reseal the arm herself, Kasen realized she would need to enlist the help of a sealing specialist.

This would lead her to the shrine of Reimu Hakurei, Gensokyo’s primary incident resolver, youkai exterminator, shrine maiden, and most importantly, sealing specialist. Knowing that just dropping such a task on Reimu would only cause trouble and expose her true nature as an Oni to all of Gensokyo, she would instead aim to befriend Reimu, and slowly overtime, train her in whatever ways possible, so she would be ready to confront Ibaraki-Douji’s arm and reseal it when the day would come.

After several years, many more incidents, almost accidentally causing the destruction of Gensokyo, and a lot of Kasen trying her damndest to guide Reimu down the right path to be fully prepared, the day would finally come. Reimu would discover Ibaraki-Douji’s Arm, and after fighting with it for a short time, would have her soul separated from her body and sent to Avici to be trapped for eternity. However, anticipating this, the real Kasen would also send Reimu’s body with her soul to Avici, to allow her to escape what would have otherwise been an inescapable prison, and to confront Ibaraki-Doujin’s Arm. After a brief fight with the arm, Kasen herself makes her way into Avici, fusing with her missing right arm, becoming a full Oni yet again.

After doing this, she tosses a piece of food to Reimu, so she wont fight on an empty stomach and can put up a true fight. What Ibaraki-Douji doesn’t know is that hidden within the food, was a fragment of the Onikirimaru blade, the only thing that could seal her. With her body in turmoil with itself, and with Reimu having everything she needed to finally remove Ibaraki-Douji from Kasen’s body, she battles with the Oni yet again, finally sealing the arm away again for good.

After recovering from the ordeal, obtaining her sealed arm, and bringing it home with her, to keep it as a constant reminder of her past, of who she used to be, and who she must never return to being. After Kasen takes some time off to herself and reflects about things, she eventually comes to the decision that she’ll continue living the life she created for herself in Gensokyo, following her chosen path as a hermit to eventually reach heaven, and to continue acting as a mentor to Reimu, keeping her and her shrine on the right path, because in her own words, “and if I don’t do it, who else will?!”

Fleetway Sonic Equipment & Notable Techniques:

Power Sneakers:

Sonic’s iconic red and white striped sneakers, which are specially created to reduce friction while running, to prevent his shoes from wearing out and to allow him to run at top speeds with little resistance. Initially gifted to him by Dr. Ivo Kintobor, they were what allowed him to reach the speed of sound the first time. He would also later upgrade them every now and again for increased grip.

Super Speed:

Fleetway Sonic, being an iteration of the Blue Blur, of course has super speed, and can use said speed in a variety of different ways for a variety of different effects and attacks. He moves so fast he can create afterimages, his pure speed can create bursts of fire and superheat sand to glass, he can create Sonic Booms, create gusts of wind, create vortexes strong enough to eject large quantities of liquid, spin his leg to rev it up for a super sonic kick, and create tornados strong enough to rip apart steel structures from the inside. He can even create strange wind vortexes called Speed Cocoons, which can redirect projectiles, redirect lightning, and also has the ability to encase objects within the cocoon. Doing so he was able to contain the destructive effect of an explosion, and in his Super Form was able to hyper-compress a volcanic eruption into stone in just a few seconds.

Bodily Weaponry:

Due to the freak accident that turned Sonic’s fur blue and fused his quills together, Sonic’s body has become a verifiable weapon in of itself, his quills now sharp enough to allow him to turn into a concussive spinball of machine smashing devastation that can burrow through the ground, easily tear through Robotnik’s myriad of baddies, smash through steel, shatter a tank on impact, smash through solid rock, and much, much more.

Vibration Manipulation:

Sonic’s super speed gives him some extra benefits as well, as he can vibrate his body at supersonic speeds to a wide range of effects. He can vibrate the molecules in the air in front of him to create force fields (his Insta-Shield), he can cause earthquakes just by running, can disorient people by rapidly vibrating them, can loosen bindings such as ropes by vibrating the part of his body that’s tied, and even weaken the molecular structure of things, such as when he vibrates his arms so fast that he was able to weaken and then shatter the chains his arms were locked in place with.

Mobius Rings:

Utilizing Mobian Rings, Sonic can use them to travel through dimensions, such as when he traveled to the Special Zone. He could likely also travel to other locations directly if needed, though he would later on use Star Posts instead.

Underwater Suit:

When purely underwater combat is required, Sonic’s prepared with an underwater exosuit, which allows him to obviously stay underwater for extensive periods of time due to its oxygenation. It was also devised to give him complete underwater mobility, allowing him to travel underwater at high speeds and use all of his special attacks underwater, including the spin attack or blast attack. It’s also notably durable, being able to handle fighting other creatures underwater, smashing through walls/windows, and handle the impact of Sonic’s own speedy attacks.

Laser Gun:

An actual real fucking gun. Part of most Badnik infantry, Sonic snagged it off of a Badnik before taking a shot with it and tossing it aside. Surprisingly he has quite good marksmanship with it, able to snipe a badnik while free falling in the sky from a good distance away. He’s snicked guns off of Badniks plenty and considering his allies have wielded them before, it’s not unlikely he may have a cache of them at his secret base.

Bob Beaky Disguise:

When he needs to go undercover or mask his identity, he has a consistent cover he uses called “Bob Beaky”, a penguin that’s completely covered in winter gear, masking his form completely. He’s used it to fool his enemies on several occasions.

Tornado:

Sonic’s signature airplane, though it's mostly piloted by Tails while Sonic stands on the wings. While Sonic has never flown it himself, he’s capable of controlling a spaceship and manually changing its course with no prior experience, meaning he’s likely capable of flying a plane. It's capable of traveling across Mobius at high speeds, for when chasing an aerial threat, or when Sonic needs to get somewhere fast, but not too fast as to leave his little buddy behind. It's been destroyed and rebuilt many times, but is a handy little plane, can’t go wrong with a classic.

Aircraft:

Should Sonic ever need to get to a location, aerial or otherwise, with a large group of friends, he has a special aircraft capable of carrying 4 people he can pilot with ease.

Kintobor Computer:

A computer system containing an exact replication of Kintobor’s brain waves before being transformed into Dr. Robotnik by the Chaos Emeralds, created when his brain waves were somehow burned into a Golden Ring that was on the scene of the accident. Through the technical know-how of Porker Lewis, he devised a computer system that could have Kintobor’s personality built into it. While typically stored in a master computer at Sonic’s Secret Freedom Fighting Base, the intelligence can be transferred to a Laptop or a Golden Ring should he need to be brought on the go. He’s an incredible, state of the art system, able to keep tabs on Robotnik’s transmissions, keep track of the location of all of Robotnik’s forces, monitor specific zones to ensure he could detect when a zone is attacked to alert Sonic and friends, track and pinpoint large accumulations of Chaos Energy, and was eventually upgraded to the point that he could monitor the entire planet. He’s also displayed the ability to manipulate machinery in order to manipulate Chaos Energy, such as when he used a Star Post to pull all of Super Sonic’s Chaos Energy out of Sonic, and sent it to the Special Zone. After being hacked into by Grimer, Robotnik’s second hand, Porker would install a protective sub-routine to ensure that Kintobor’s main system would be hack-proof.

Kintobor Wristwatch:

A wristwatch used by Sonic to communicate with the Kintobor computer. This allows for him to be relayed any and all necessary information at any point, allowing him to consult the Kintobor Computer for locations of current badnik attacks, relay to base to communicate to his allies, gain advice from Kintobor, and generally access any information he needs from the planetary surveillance Kintobor offers. A truly useful reconnaissance tool.

The Complete Chaos Emeralds:

Sonic initially protected the 6 Emeralds in their Incomplete States, having all of them safely secured in a box that would regulate their temperatures in a secure location so as to not make them turn volatile. The Incomplete Emeralds held enough power within the release of a potent dose of negative Chaos Energy that created Super Sonic. They would later be fused together with the other 6 emeralds (yes, there are 12 Chaos Emeralds) to form The Complete Chaos Emeralds. The Complete Chaos Emeralds are significantly more powerful, allowing whoever absorbs or draws power from them to achieve incredible reality warping powers, being the power source for Super Sonic, God Robotnik, and Perfect Chaos. Sonic no longer keeps the emeralds on hand once they became The Complete Emeralds, as he would forfeit them to Knuckles so they could be safely watched at and empower the Floating Island, though he regularly visits and even lives on the Island for a time. While they are not a part of his standard equipment, his Super Form has all the powers netted by them due to… being powered up by them…

Super Sonic:

As mentioned prior, the Chaos Emeralds are responsible for the creation of Sonic’s super form, Super Sonic. Though in the Fleetway Comics, Super Sonic is very, very different from its counterparts in every other iteration. Super Sonic is instead its own entity, created after Sonic was exposed to a potent dose of negative Chaos Energy from the Incomplete Emeralds, having a darker yellow color, sharper fingers and quills, red spiral eyes, and fucked up snaggleteeth (it's how you know he’s British). Super Sonic is a psychotic, maniacal murder machine, wanting nothing more destruction and havoc. He would become even more powerful when he would later be exposed to the Complete Chaos Emeralds, absorbing a large dose of Chaos Energy in the process. Super Sonic is a complete menace, and has no qualms with killing Sonic’s friends, in fact, he wants nothing more than to do just that, making him a dangerous prospect to ever be released. Speaking of released, Super Sonic can be released in more ways than just absorbing Chaos Energy, collecting a large amount of Mobius Rings can also prompt the transformation, and should Sonic ever become too stressed or pushed into a corner, he can involuntarily be transformed into Super Sonic. While he’s transformed willingly before to take on dangerous threats, it most often happens under times of extreme stress.

Super Sonic was separated from Sonic for a long portion of the story, after absorbing the power of the Complete Emeralds made him too difficult to control and too big a threat. Even after being removed from Sonic’s physical form, Super Sonic would instead just gain his own fully formed body made of pure Chaos Energy. He would continue to wreak havoc and generally shit on everyone’s days for nearly the entire length of the comic, until he would eventually be re-sealed within Sonic at the end of the story, when sealing him away or allowing him to roam free was no longer an option. While Sonic seems to have slightly better control over him now, if he were to be too stressed or absorb too much Chaos Energy again, the Golden Demon could be released at any time.

Other aspects worth noting of his Super Form are that Sonic retains almost no memories of what happens post transformation, and that the Super Form doesn’t really have a set time-limit. Before being exposed to the Complete Emeralds, the time he would spend as Super Sonic would usually be brief, but after that, Super could be in control for long stretches of time, and once he was separated from Sonic, was able to stay transformed for literal months before beginning to suffer any consequences, and then living for several months even after that.

Kasen Ibaraki Equipment & Notable Techniques:

Artificial Arm:

Kasen’s signature bandaged arm isn’t actually an arm covered in bandages, no, it’s an artificial arm composed of a vaporous black smoke and bandages. However, it can compress itself to look just like a bandaged arm, and despite being made of smoke and bandages, has the full functionality of a regular arm, able to grab, hold, and punch things just as any arm could. Its strange composition also gives it a myriad of different functions and abilities. It can disconnect from her body and be remotely controlled on it's own to grab things at long distances, it can stretch further than normal to extend her reach, it can grow in size, ensnare opponents, create cocoons to withhold opponents, twist and spin in contortions to spin opponents like a tornado, release energy blasts, and much more.

Its most important ability however, is its ability to grab and crush spirits, souls, ghosts, phantoms, any non-corporeal spiritual entity can be crushed by her prosthetic arm. Any spirit crushed by her arm is completely obliterated, to the point of being removed from the cycle of reincarnation, with even Shinigami being puzzled by its ability to do so.

Ibaraki Box of a Hundred Medicines:

A special one shou box (approximately 2 liters) that has the special ability to cure all illnesses or heal any injury of the one who drinks from it. Should the drinker already be healthy, they’ll be granted extraordinary superhuman strength. It does have some drawbacks however, in that whoever uses it will temporarily become like an Oni in personality shortly after drinking from it, and should anyone repeatedly use it, they will become an Oni overtime as well. Considering Kasen is already an Oni, neither of those things are of concern to her, though, so she mainly uses it to drink Sake from. In fact, she has to drink from it relatively consistently, as if she doesn’t her Artificial Arm will begin to gradually rot away.

Guiding of Animals:

Kasen has an innate, incredible ability to be able to communicate, guide, and control animals. This includes all kinds, from regular animals, to cryptids, beast youkai, dragons, and potentially even some other types of youkai. She’s able to effortlessly understand what animals wish to tell her, and they will gladly listen to whatever she says. She has a variety of animal servants, and is also able to freely summon in combat, or just in general. Her animals also seem notably more powerful than most, potentially due to her training and care of them, notably making her Dragon stronger by feeding it a young lightning lizard’s liver. However her ability does have a notable limitation, in that it doesn’t extend to fish, however water based mammals are fair game.

Koutei:

Kasen’s pet dragon Koutei is one of her most notable pets, as it can easily pick up or carry around her and other humans with ease, and is powerful enough to generate storms, causing severe downpours and lightning.

Kume:

Kasen’s pet Dapeng, a giant eagle cryptid. The bird is powerful enough to easily carry Kasen’s weight on her back and fly her long distances. It can also assist her in battle, attacking opponents and letting her hang off of its legs.

Kanda:

Kasen’s other pet eagle, and her planned successor for Kume due to his old age. While Kanda is still young and inexperienced, having difficulty with tasks such as shopping and navigation, he can still assist her in battle like the rest of her pets, and will one day grow to be as large and fearsome as Kume… probably.

Mukou:

Kasen’s pet Raijuu, is another cryptid of surprisingly immense strength. Raijuu are electricity generating beasts, able to output enough electricity to cause electrical shocks and even form entire thunderstorms. A Raijuu’s electricity also contains a specially potent poison, one that’s so ancient that most humans, even those with inherent resistance to poison, no longer know how to deal with it. This poison will slowly affect the afflicted, causing them to feel unmotivated, before eventually reaching the point that “you lose the ability to think and become an invalid”, likely, the complete shutdown of your brain, or at least entering a vegetive state. The only cure for the poison, funnily enough, is corn, consuming it allows for a quick recovery.

Housou:

Kasen’s pet bigass fucking tiger. It guards her home within her Senkai, warding off intruders, though not attacking them unless provoked. Kasen can also easily summon it into battle. Housou is notably powerful, in fact, he was able to injure Marisa Kirisame, giving her a severe slash wound on an arm that she had to have treated, likely making it one of Kasen’s most powerful pets.

Manzairaku:

A seal that somehow made its way into Gensokyo after being forgotten by the populace of the city in the real world. While he lives with the Kappa in Genbu Ravine, Kasen has the ability to summon him in battle in the floater fighters to get off a quick attack, before returning to his watery home. Even the artist of her manga doesn’t know how the fuck Kasen summons him.

(Kasen has a number of other pets living in her home, but any others aren’t worth talking about as they generally aren’t combat applicable and thus, are not worth mentioning, except for this puppy, he’s so cute he’s absolutely worth mentioning)

Fangshi (Hermit Arts):

(Kasen’s Senkai as pictured in AoCF)

Hermits are capable of a variety of special arts, but one of the most notable is their ability to create their own Senkai. Senkai are essentially pocket dimensions that the creator can manipulate the size and contents of. Kasen has the capability to control the seasonal cycle and weather of her Senkai, and can alter the “path” to enter it as she pleases (Senkai’s are typically entered through a crack, however, Kasen seems to have found a way to enter a Senkai via navigating a very specific route). Senkai’s are showcased to contain entire regions with moons, starry skies, and are even stated to be able to be infinite in size. While most Senkai are typically accessed through a crack, Kasen found a way to make her Senkai only accessible by taking a specific route she created to it, though she has full capability to alter this route at leisure, and could likely still access her Senkai via a crack as well. This is where her home, a large mansion/dojo is located, and is where she resides most of the time.

She’s also afforded some various other abilities by the way of the Hermit. She’s functionally immortal, unable to die of natural age related causes, and can maintain her body by natural cures. She can harden her skin to be comparable to that of steel, and has access to an array of magical hermit arts.

Oni Physiology:

Kasen, despite her best efforts to hide it and her pursuit of the Hermit lifestyle, is still physically an Oni, a type of Youkai. Oni have been stated to be the strongest Youkai in Gensokyo, even surpassing the incredible might of vampires, which are capable of ripping out centuries old trees single handedly. Oni have immense physical strength, incredibly physically resistant bodies capable of withstanding incredibly high temperatures, and can also put down alcohol to a ridiculous degree before getting drunk. Due to Oni having disappeared for ages, most of the extermination methods to deal with them have been lost to time as well, making them especially difficult to deal with. However, being an Oni specifically, it does come with the specific weaknesses of an intense fear of fried soy beans (yes, seriously) and sardine head on a holly stick. While it's unclear if Kasen is truly weak to these items or is just psychologically trained to fear them, she does nonetheless.

Likely due to her Oni nature, Kasen repeatedly notes throughout the fighting games that her true strength is simply too big a threat to be released at most points, meaning she holds back in most of her fights in ULiL and AoCF. It’s also worth noting that her “full strength” during both games wouldn’t be her maximum power, as she wouldn’t be at her full Oni power after being fused with her arm. So she’s essentially holding back, while already having been restricted from her full strength.

Youkai Physiology:

Oni also get most of the general abilities granted to those with Youkai physiology, due to Oni being a type of Youkai. Their abilities range from things such as incredible regeneration, incredibly long lifespans, complete control over their physical form, intangibility, being able to transform into a vaporous black smoke, and much more.

Spell Cards:

Spell Cards are the most integral form of attack within the verse of Touhou. Originally designed as a non-lethal form of combat meant to allow youkai and humans to combat each other on even terms, it has since become the most widespread form of combat present throughout the series. Virtually all fights are handled via spell card duels, which are restricted by a number of rules. First, one must give a ‘name’ to their spell cards, which defines the meaning, and thus the power, of an attack. Second, one must make their attacks stylized or ‘beautiful’, usually in the form of complex danmaku patterns. In the words of Marisa Kirisame, if one were to solely opt for the strongest, most powerful danmaku, there would only be a single ‘best’ variation, leading to repetitive and boring fights, and thus, a boring and repetitive lifestyle. These patterns are usually used to represent concepts tied to the user (eg; Marisa’s penchant for star-based magic being commonly represented in her spell cards), their personality, or even their history. Third, the spell cards must be fair in nature; While Touhou’s danmaku is infamously difficult, in-universe it is designed to be dodgeable by even novice fighters, serving the aforementioned purpose of equalizing fights with a large discrepancy in power. Finally, a spell card duel concludes when one person has successfully dodged all the spell cards of their opponent, or has ‘timed out’ their opponent.

While spell cards are generally designed to be used for non-lethal combat, the rules are ultimately still just rules, and can be broken. It is stated that accidents do occur under spell card rules, implying that injury and death are still possible, and Marisa has compiled a small sampling of spell cards capable of outright killing their targets. Furthermore, Junko’s spell cards are ALL designed with the specific intent of killing people. Thus, spell cards are still capable of being used as fully lethal attacks; The distinction between lethal and non-lethal is ultimately the choice of the user. Finally, a spell card user is still capable of using unfair danmaku patterns, with many gladly using impossible to dodge patterns against those they deem threatening enough (such as Seija, who had an entire game based around Spell Card Rules not being followed, with Impossible Spell Card).

While spell cards were initially intended to be literal cards that one carried on their person, this idea has since been retconned, and spell cards are now solely stylized representations of one’s abilities that do not require any sort of extra equipment (save for instances such as Marisa’s Mini-Hakkero).

Spirit Manipulation:

All things in Touhou, both living and spiritual entities, possess ‘Spirit’, acting as a universal energy source across the series. Spirit is not only a fundamental aspect of the use of magic, but is also directly tied to the existence of magic itself due to its connection to the mental layer of reality. This is shown through how Spirit in the fighting games acts as the meter used to achieve supernatural feats such as flight and most projectile attacks, while in the danmaku games, Spirit is the measure of your current shot’s power. However, Spirit is more than just energy; As is explained throughout Scarlet Weather Rhapsody and a few supplementary materials, Spirit is in fact the same as temperament, the emotional state of living things. Temperament is then stated to be the same thing as phantoms, which are the souls of living things. A few separate statements confirm that Spirit is also the stamina, chi, and subconscious of an individual.

Throughout the games, in addition to using Spirit as a primary source of energy, characters are frequently depicted as being able to reduce or absorb the amount of Spirit available to their opponent. This triggers on most basic attacks, and while the depiction of this mechanic varies somewhat, it is consistently shown to be a result of someone hitting their opponent.

Ibaraki-douji’s Arm:

Specifically sealed away within a box meant to contain it, is Kasen’s right arm. Within her right arm, contains her true form and power as an Oni, allowing her to unleash her full potential, but also contains an alternate personality, the festering manifestation of all her malice and hatred from her life as a warmongering Oni. Should she be re-formed with this arm, she shall become a full Oni once again, but also become an incredible threat.

The mummified arm itself is also markedly durable, to the point that after being sealed, Reimu tried for an extended period of time to destroy it, even stabbing it with the Onikirimaru, but to no avail. Even Kasen herself admitted the arm could not be destroyed, meaning it’s likely near indestructible.

Oni of Hell Kasen Ibaraki:

Kasen’s full Oni form, her maximum strength is unleashed, and she’s able to operate at full, crushing Oni power, one of the highest ranking members of her species. However, in this form, she withholds two personalities, her main personality of Kasen Ibaraki, the kind, helpful Hermit, and Ibara-douji, the brutal, violent, psychotic Oni she used to be. While the personalities can switch back and forth, eventually Ibara-douji will take full control of the body, being the more dominant personality between the two. Meaning that Kasen’s full, unbelievable power will be controlled by a maniacal, murder happy Oni.

In this state, she’s nearly immune to any method of sealing, even Reimu Hakurei’s absurdly powerful attacks intended to seal her away, such as Fantasy Nature, were completely unable to do so. The only thing capable of sealing arm away at this point is the blade that looped her arm off in the first place, the Onikirimaru blade, which contains the power necessary to sever Kasen’s arm and seal away her malice-filled half.

Fragment of Onikirimaru:

It’s unknown how or where she got it from, but Kasen has within her possession a fragment of the Onikirimaru blade, the only thing that can sever and seal away her arm. She snuck a piece of the blade in food she provided to Reimu before fusing with her arm to allow Reimu the chance to seal her arm away yet again. While we don’t see her with it afterwards, it’s likely she kept this fragment in case her arm should ever need to be re-sealed. You don’t need to necessarily use the blade itself to slice the arm off either, as you could just use it to empower your own attacks to have sealing properties, like Reimu did with her Fantasy Seal.

Fleetway Sonic Abilities and Haxx:

BASE FORM SONIC:

Afterimage Creation - Can create after-images through sheer speed, and occasionally uses them to disoriented opponents.

Underground Mobility - Can easily dig and create tunnels through the ground

Limited Fire Manipulation - Through his sheer speed, he can melt sand into glass by running on it, likely creating small fire/heat sparks

Bodily Weaponry & Body Control - Sonic’s spines are sharp, dangerous weapons he can use against his opponents by spinning into a ball and slamming into them with his spin attack, and various other ways.

Air Manipulation - Through his sheer speed he can create gusts of wind, wind funnels, mini tornados, sandstorms, and with moves such as the Sonic Cyclone, generate entire tornadoes/cyclones capable of putting out fires, even ones capable of ripping apart machinery from the inside, can reverse the rotation of a drill, can spin his arm so rapidly he can create a wind blast, he can also create a type of wind vortex called a Speed Cocoon (or Sonic Vortex, he comes up with a lot of fucking names), that has the ability to repress the explosion of a missile and redirect and divert attacks, such as when he rediverted electricity.

Vibration Manipulation - Created an earthquake simply by running, and he can rapidly vibrate his body for various effects, such as vibrating air molecules, disorienting his opponent, loosening bindings, and even weakening the molecular structures of things.

Forcefield Creation - Can vibrate the molecules of the air around him to create force fields

Supernatural Willpower - Despite every odd being stacked against him, being physically incapable of having any hope at defeating him, and Robotnik having full control of all of reality, Sonic still refused to give into and accept defeat from Robotnik, proclaiming that he’d fight to the end and that he’ll always win.

Self-Sustenance (Type 1) - Could survive in space as he traveled from Mobius to Miracle Planet. Somehow.

Teleportation and Dimensional Travel - With Mobius Rings, he can travel to different locations across the planet or to alternate universes. He typically uses Star Posts to do this, but usually doesn’t carry them in person as they need to be transported by vehicle.

Underwater Mobility & Self Sustenance (Type 1) - With the Underwater Suit, he can move completely uninhibited underwater, and can survive for a long stretch of time due to the suit’s oxygenation.

Flight - With the Tornado & Aircraft, though these would be quite impractical in combat.

Transformation & Multiple Selves - When highly stressed, backed into a corner, after absorbing too many Mobian Rings, or upon absorbing a large dosage of Chaos Energy, Sonic will transform into Super Sonic, a psychopathic, bloodlusted alter ego created by negative Chaos Energy.

Super Sonic:

SUPER SONIC HAS ACCESS TO ALL PRIOR ABILITIES BUT ON A MUCH HIGHER LEVEL

(You will see “God Robotnik” mentioned for many of Super Sonic’s abilities. God Robotnik and Super Sonic both use the Complete Emeralds as power sources, gaining their abilities from their energy. Nearly any ability of God Robotnik’s should be accessible to Super Sonic, and will be treated as such. This topic specifically will be elaborated on more in the “Various Major Questions” section, should you have any concerns towards the validity of this scaling.)

Energy Absorption - Due to his existence as a being of pure Chaos Energy, Super Sonic can easily absorb Chaos Energy out of others and use it to empower and revitalize himself, such as when he absorbed the full power of Perfect Chaos. He could likely do this with other types of energy too.

Energy Projection - Super Sonic can shoot energy beams from his eyes. He loves doing this. A lot. It’s one of his favorite methods of attack. One of his favorite activities, even. He absolutely adores trolling with them, too. He can also release AOE blasts of energy from his body.

Explosion Manipulation & Fire Manipulation - Just, caused a mansion destroying explosion with no real explanation, likely a release of energy from his body. The explosion caused fire to spread throughout the area

Flight - Super Sonic can freely fly around at high speeds, even able to fly in and out of space.

Forcefield Creation - Super Sonic created an energy shield to protect Sonic and several others from an explosion of his own creationsolely so he could kill them himself individually.

Heat Manipulation, Electromagnetic Radiation Manipulation, Explosion Manipulation, Technology Manipulation, & Possible Space-Time Manipulation - Super Sonic can build up enough power to turn himself into an electron bomb. When doing so, he superheated the meteor he was trapped inside to millions of degrees hot, making it appear as if it was a second sun, and built up incredible electromagnetic radiation. Upon releasing the explosion, it released a planetary ranged EMP capable of shutting down every single piece of technology, machine, and computerized system on the planet. Doing this also freed him from the effects of the Omni-Viewer’s slowed time.

Time Travel & Age Manipulation - God Robotnik was able to nearly instantly travel forwards and backwards in time, and is able to forcefully drag others alongside him, such as when he traveled 65 years into the future in an instant to age Sonic to the point of being elderly, before traveling back to the current day. He could likely still age someone forwards and backwards in time without utilizing time travel, however.

Acausality (Type 1) - God Robotnik, despite being able to rewrite and erase history, to the point that he changed the events of his past making it so that Sonic never existed, which would have resulted in him never becoming Robotnik, still exists, making him immune to time paradoxes. This emerald granted* acausality likely extends to Super Sonic as well, as they’re powered by the same energy source. Sonic himself also obviously gets this acausality as well, as despite literally no longer existing historically, Sonic remains unaffected and still alive, somehow. He also once traveled back in time, and existed and interacted with himself at the same point in time without causing any issues.

Space-Time Manipulation - God Robotnik showcased complete and utter control over the space-time of the universe and the special zone.

Reality Warping - God Robotnik was able to completely rewrite, recreate, and alter the entire universe and special zone several times over, could alter the physiology and existence of other characters, warp entire locations to be completely different, rewrite or erase people from history, or rewrite them to be subservient to him, anything he imagines could be brought to reality, could change anything, he could destroy people with a thought, as well as many more effects. Perfect Chaos was also able to immediately begin warping reality after absorbing the Chaos Emeralds, using them to warp Robotnik’s stronghold into something befitting his image.

Power Nullification - Was able to nullify Sonic’s speed and skill, preventing him from using any of his combat abilities, these abilities can also be returned/un-nullified

Regeneration (Low-Godly) - God Robotnik regenerated his physical form in a completely different location after his body was blown to chunks. Super Sonic was also able to fully recreate his physical form that he would take while within Sonic’s body, when all of his Chaos Energy was ripped out of Sonic’s body and ejected into the Special Zone. Despite just being a disembodied consciousness scattered amongst energy, he would reform himself into a physical form, becoming a separate entity from Sonic.

Size Manipulation - God Robotnik could alter his own size, to be able to hold the entirety of the Floating Island in his hands, or to dwarf the planet of Mobius to the point he could hold it in his hand (of note, Mobius is exactly comparable to Earth in size).

Telekinesis - God Robotnik used telekinesis to throw Knuckles across the room by simply pointing at him.

Duplication - God Robotnik could create duplicates of himself.

Intangibility - God Robotnik could turn intangible, causing Sonic to phase right through him.

Shapeshifting - God Robotnik can easily alter his body’s shape and form, such as transforming it to an extra durable crystal-like form. He was also able to take many different forms while reshaping the universe to his whim to toy with Sonic.

Transmutation - God Robotnik can transmute beings to stone.

Mind Control & Possible Dream Manipulation - God Robotnik is able to easily brainwash and control the minds of others, such as when he manipulates Knuckles’ mind to make him a devoted servant, or how every creation or summon of his is loyal to him. It’s also implied he employs some kind of manipulation of dreams upon those he brainwashes, as upon being released from Robotnik’s mental control, Knuckles notes he was having a strange dream (it is entirely possible that this is just him perceiving his previous mental state as a dream, it's unclarified).

Dimensional Travel & BFR - Robotnik sends Sonic to the Special Zone, which is a completely different universe, and also travels there himself. Considering the green energy enveloping Sonic, it’s likely he warped him there rather than opening a portal.

Summoning/Creation - God Robotnik could summon/re-create several characters from across the Fleetway series, even characters that were canonically dead, and could forcefully control them to do his bidding. He was able to summon Metallix Mark I, Megatox, Plasma, Arnhem Abacus (who exists solely to control Plasma), Commander Brutus, Metamorphia, and he could likely summon any other characters in the series, so long as he can visualize them. Meaning entities that he has created such as Metallix Mark II, Knuckles Metallix, many of his machines, and even the Death Egg could easily be summoned. Some of these characters have specific abilities of their own, which will be listed down below:

While God Robotnik, and by extension, Super Sonic, could likely summon/recreate almost any other character in the Fleetway Universe, listing all of all of the characters in Fleetway and their abilities would be a complete pain in the ass, and would kind of be going far beyond the matchup itself, and such summons happening at all would be quite unlikely. It’s also unlikely that Super Sonic would know to summon every character in the verse, as he wouldn’t have the experience or memory of them to be able to visualize them in the first place.

*Robotnik’s acausality only applies to his God Robotnik form, as unlike Sonic, who remained unaffected after his history was altered/erased, when Robotnik’s past was altered by the Brotherhood of Metallix to have made it that the accident that created him never occured, he reverted back to Kintobor, as he never underwent the accident to become Robotnik

Kasen Ibaraki Abilities and Haxx:

Spirit Manipulation - The main energy system of all magic users in Touhou is Spirit (also known as Spirit Power, Spirit Energy, Temperament, etc…), and any Spell Card user in the series is capable of manipulating said energy system. Characters are capable of reducing or absorbing this energy through a number of methods, ranging from projectile attacks to basic physical hits. Spirit is essentially a hodgepodge of the soul, emotions, subconscious/mind, chi, and stamina, as described throughout the series in multiple ways. Manipulation of this system yields an incredible amount of abilities and resistances, which include:
(before listing these abilities, note that Spirit is typically represented in the games as P shaped squares, and that this explanation of the system is very abridged, more elaborate description will be available down below)

This gives Kasen a lot of benefits and options, and her ability to negate resistances to Soul Manipulation means she can bypass most people’s resistances and still affect them regardless, making all abilities she is netted through Spirit Manipulation layered. Check here for more detail on Spirit Manipulation as a system, Fujiwara went to great lengths putting the page together.

Spell Card Creation & Usage - Kasen has the ability to create Spell Cards, in order to define its form and power. This would give Kasen:

While there are limitations to this ability, making it not as effective as full Concept Manip, it still has some potent uses within battle.

Animal Manipulation & Summoning - Kasen’s ability to guide animals allows her to communicate with, guide, command, control, and even summon animals. Animals will do whatever she asks, whether it be to assist her in combat or even help her go shopping. She can also transfigure Youkai.

Danmaku - Nearly every character in the Touhou franchise is capable of creating danmaku. Danmaku battles are the main method of combat within the Touhou franchise, and Kasen has participated in many herself. Danmaku within Touhou is typically intended to be overwhelming, flashy, beautiful displays of elegance for competitive purposes to solve disputes, but to still be completely dodgeable despite that. However, those rules of combat can be broken, and unfair, impossible to dodge danmaku patterns can be created just as easily, in fact an entire Touhou game was based around this concept. The distinction between fair and unfair danmaku is entirely up to the user, and in a serious fight to the death, Kasen has no requirements to be fair.

Artificial Arm - Kasen’s Artificial Arm is unique, and nets her several special abilities and attributes, those being:

Soul Manipulation - Kasen, in a fight with Reimu, hit her with an attack that separated Reimu’s soul from her body, and forcefully brought it to Avici within Hell.

BFR - After separating Reimu’s soul from her body, she forcefully brought it to Avici within Hell, a realm equated to being an infinite prison that one would be trapped within for eternity. She was also able to bring Reimu’s body to Avici as well, in a manner described as like teleportation/disappearing. She could also theoretically BFR someone into her Senkai, by trapping them within and sealing it off completely.

Summoning - With her Last Word, she can summon a massive claw to attack her opponents, a Monkey’s paw, specifically.

Longevity - Youkai have innately longer lifespans than humans, with Half Youkai such as Rinnosuke not appearing to age at all.

Flight - Kasen can freely and easily fly around. She can also summon her animal familiars to fly her around if desired, such as her pet dragon or her pet dapeng.

Regeneration (Mid-Godly) - Kasen, being an Oni, is a Youkai. Youkai have the ability to recover from their bodies being completely destroyed. What’s of note here is that Youkai are beings composed entirely of Spirit, meaning they can regenerate from complete erasure of body, mind, and soul. Kasen herself does this when her body is completely obliterated and disappears after Reimu severs Ibara-Douji’s Arm from her body, and she completely reforms herself*.

Immortality 1 (Eternal Life) - As a Hermit, Kasen is unable to die via natural means such as aging, able to live eternally so long as she is not killed by unnatural means and maintains her body.

Statistics Amplification - Hermits can make their bodies as hard as steel.

Purification (Type 1) - Hermits can maintain their bodies via natural cures.

Air Manipulation - She can fire tornado-like gusts of wind.

Necromancy - She can manipulate and control skeletons, such as when Ibaraki-Douji controls the skeletons of all those she’s consumed or killed over her lifetime.

Light Manipulation - She can create orbs of light, in large quantities, can dissipate them at will, and can manipulate their size easily.

Forcefield Creation - She can create a forcefield around herself to block incoming attacks, and can passively create a barrier around herself even while stunned.

Non-Physical Interaction - She can harm Phantoms, Evil Spirits, and Youkai with her regular physical attacks, magic, and danmaku with no issue.

Shapeshifting - Upon entering Gensokyo, Youkai gained the ability to change their shape at will, though they frequently choose to keep their form as something more adjacent to that of humans.

Incorporeality - Youkai are beings composed largely of spirit, and have been stated to be unbound from the confines of the material world.

Intangibility - Youkai can break themselves down into a type of black, formless mist at will, and dematerialize into a physical form whenever they desire. They can also regenerate from said mist.  They are also repeatedly shown to form from this mist out of thin air

Enhanced Senses & Spatial Manipulation - Was able to sense distortions in the Hakurei Barrier, and was able to pull Yukari out of said distortion after opening a rift within. Magic users are also sensitive to changes in temperament.

Possession - During the events of Antinomy of Common Flowers, Kasen gained access to Perfect Possession, a technique that allows one to take over one’s body and mind. While this can be done consensually, it is still able to forcefully take control of a person if desired. While this ability was tied to a singular incident, it should still be accessible by Kasen even after the incident ended, as its existence was tied to that of the Urban Legend incident, which never canonically ended.

Acausality (Types 1 & 4) - Was unaffected by Keine erasing the human village from history, despite the fact that youkai rely on the continued existence of the human village in order to sustain their own existence. Exists within the Hakurei Barrier, which created a world with a different flow of time and different physical laws. Should be comparable to those who can act normally inside Eientei (such as Reimu or Marisa), which exists outside of time and causality.

Dimensional Travel - Can create magical circles to transport herself to Otherworlds, such as Avici within Hell. She can freely leave the Hakurei Barrier to exit and re-enter Gensokyo as she pleases (and was even chastised by Yukari for doing this thoughtlessly when she went to get fish from the Outside World’s Oceans), with Marisa (unknowingly) describing the feeling of Kasen re-entering Gensokyo as “almost like opening a door to Makai” (Makai being an Otherworld in Touhou) and like “space warping”, and opened a hole in the barrier in ULiL several times as well. Being able to access her Senkai from just about anywhere also likely counts as a form of dimensional travel as well, since she could use it to travel to Gensokyo.

Aura, Fear Manipulation & Aura Suppression  - All Youkai have a passive aura composed of “Youkai Energy”, this aura can induce pins and needles throughout one's body, make them tremble, and can even induce these effects while sealed away. If the Youkai successfully induces fear in their target, they can also passively absorb their spirit. Youkai also all have the ability to suppress their auras, allowing them to infiltrate human villages without causing issues, and even suppress it to the point that individuals with heightened senses to Youkai Energy such as Kosuzu Mootori cannot detect them.

Pocket Reality Manipulation & Sealing - As a Hermit, Kasen is capable of creating her own personal Senkai, and then sealing it away from the world. She has full control over this Senkai, being able to manipulate its size, as well as even more minute details such as the individual seasons and weather in an individual region of it. Marisa has described her Senkai as “feeling like another world” and seeming like Heaven. The seals she had placed on her home were so powerful that even Tenshi had difficulty breaking them, a Celestial who can easily shatter seals.

Ibara-douji’s Arm - Ibara-Douji’s arm has some unique aspects to it as well, those being:

Poison Manipulation - Via her pet Raijuu Mukuo, who can induce a poison through his electricity that induces lethargy, and eventually “causes you to stop thinking and turn into an invalid”, likely shutting down the victim’s brain.

Weather Manipulation - Via her pet Dragon Koutei, who can change the weather by creating storms, torrential rain, and lightning storms. Her pet Raijuu can also create electrical storms. She can also control the weather and seasons specifically within her own Senkai.

Electricity Manipulation - Kasen’s pet Raijuu can create electrical storms and produces static shocks, and is also capable of shooting out ball lightning of various sizes. Kasen’s Dragon Koutei can also create lightning storms.

Possible Illusion Creation - May have created illusory versions of several characters.

Fortune - Within the context of Touhou, ‘Fortune’ is the measure of one’s luck, and consequently, their passive control over the memory layer, which dictates probability and fate. Those who control fortune can cause projectiles to swerve away from themselves, tilt the odds of any situation in their favor, or just generally make their entire lives easier. As a magic user, Kasen likely possesses these abilities to some extent as well, as magic requires fortune as one of its most fundamental components. Fortune is an incredibly varied mechanic, granting access to the following passive abilities:

  • Probability & Fate Manipulation - Fortune allows one to control the memory layer itself, using it to manipulate the power of probability and cause any event to occur in such a way that favors the user (eg; having a die land on a desired number). The memory layer is not just limited to probability, as it controls fate as well, and fate users such as Remilia are stated to use fortune/misfortune as a basis for their powers.

  • Law & Physics Manipulation - The memory layer exists beyond the physical layer, which is where all physical laws reside. Essentially, fortune is not bound by these laws, and can produce effects that ignore the laws of physics.

  • Causality Manipulation - Fortune manipulates the ‘memory’ stored within all objects, which acts as a recording of all actions that thing has undertaken (eg; the past results of rolling a die, and which way the die landed).

  • Creation & Soul Manipulation - Both objects and souls result from probability, allowing one to alter these should they alter probability.

  • Clairvoyance - Good fortune makes it easier to find one’s way through difficult to navigate areas, like the Bamboo Forest of the Lost.

  • Statistics Reduction & Statistics Amplification - Fortune adjusts the power levels of one’s opponents to be easier or harder depending on what is more beneficial to the user at the moment, while misfortune does the same, except work against those affected by it (eg; someone with fortune will face weaker enemies, and someone afflicted with misfortune will face stronger enemies).

  • Acausality Negation - Fortune is always shown to work against those who are not bound by causal laws, such as those who could act normally inside Eientei (a place devoid of cause and effect entirely) and those whose pasts were not affected by the human village being removed from history.

  • Resistance to Diseases, Curses. Pain, BFR, & Resistance Negation - Good fortune is often used to protect against misfortune, the latter of which brings diseases, curses, can send ripples of pain throughout a victim’s body, or even cause their body to fall into Hell or across the boundary between worlds. Misfortune is also unable to be resisted through conventional means.

  • Limited Resistance to Power Nullification - Fortune is the most vital aspect of magic, and even if the other components of a successful magic spell are absent, an adequate amount of fortune can allow the spell to be cast anyways. However, this does not guard against more traditional means of nullifying powers, or nullifying magic after a spell has already been cast.

*Kasen reforming but missing her right arm is actually completely in support of her regeneration, as after her arm was initially sliced off and sealed, it became its own being, with its own mind, personality, and body. Kasen is able to regenerate her full body but NOT her right arm is perfectly in line.
**There were so many instances of her being able to manipulate her arm’s shape and it was difficult to find video references, so just visit this sprite dump, as it showcases many of the various ways she can manipulate her arm

Fleetway Sonic Resistances:

Base Sonic:

Resistance to Mind Manipulation - Resisted being brainwashed when captured by a mecha, resisted being brainwashed by Robotnik’s brain drain machine, was unaffected by hypnotic beams, and was unaffected by a brain washing machine

Limited Poison Resistance - Was able to resist the effects of a poison built specifically to kill him, being soaked in it and literally swimming in it for a period of time, though he did begin to feel the effects by fight’s end, but quickly returned to normal as soon he was no longer exposed to it

Resistance to Fear Manipulation - While initially affected by Chaos’ Fear Manipulation, after the death of Johnny Lightfoot, Sonic learns to focus on his own intense emotions (such as rage) to resist the effects of fear manipulation, and power through it, even against the heavily enhanced Perfect Chaos. While he still feels the fear, he cannot be frozen by it.

Super Sonic:

ALL RESISTANCES OF BASE SONIC APPLY TO SUPER SONIC, BUT AT A LIKELY MUCH HIGHER LEVEL

Resistance to Absorption - Sonic is unaffected by the Chaos Emeralds’ ability to absorb evil, able to hold 6 of them at once with no issue, despite the presence of Super Sonic within his body, a being of immense evil.

Resistance to Fear Manipulation - A heavily weakened, near death Post-Running Wild Super Sonic was also able to completely resist Perfect Chaos’ fear manipulation, appearing utterly unfazed even, showing no indication of even noticing the fear effect.

Resistance to Fire Manipulation - Super Sonic is activated when Sonic was backed into a corner by being caught in a massive oil fire. Despite being activated in the epicenter of these flames, and being engulfed in them, he ran out of them and was absolutely unphased by the experience at all.

Resistance to Magma Manipulation & Extreme Heat - Super Sonic flies through the Earth, puncturing one end of the planet, burrowing through the core, before looping back around, traveling through magma and surviving the heat of the core of the planet.*

Resistance to Cosmic Radiations and Extreme Cold - Can survive in space with no issues.

Resistance to Space-Time Manipulation - Was able to slightly move, as well as think and devise a plan while slowed in time to near halt by the Omni-Viewer, and was able to free himself from the time slowed imprisonment by turning himself into an electron bomb.

*While this feat is technically performed during an hypnotic illusion, it's made abundantly clear that everything Super Sonic does in this illusion is a very real capability of his, and it would not be beyond his capabilities.

Kasen Ibaraki Resistances:

Limited Resistance to Sealing - When fully formed with Ibara-Douji’s arm, she displays an incredible resistance to sealing abilities, being almost completely unphased by Reimu’s Fantasy Seal, which was cast with full intention to seal her away. Her arm can only be sealed away once it's severed by the Onikirimaru, a special katana with powerful sealing abilities

Resistance to Soul Manipulation - Survived Tenshi absorbing the souls of all living things across Gensokyo and various Otherworlds, such as the Netherworld

Resistance to Madness Manipulation - Youkai are completely resistant to the effects of the True Moon, which would drive any regular person who looks at it insane.

Resistance to Illusion Creation - Youkai are able to see illusions, and during the events of Imperishable Night, all Youkai were able to realize that the illusory moon in the sky was a fake.

Resistance to Biological Manipulation - Youkai lack DNA, brains, or any common proper organs to be manipulated.

Resistance to Matter Manipulation - Youkai are stated to be “fluctuations”, and seem to be composed of entirely different particles than what are scientifically known.

Resistance to Fear Manipulation - Youkai are unaffected by the auras of other youkai.

Resistance to Disease Manipulation - As a being composed mostly of spirit, Youkai are unaffected by physical illnesses.

Resistance to Space-Time Manipulation - Is unaffected by the magic circles of other Spell Card Users, which have the ability to cause things near them to automatically slow-down to a near-stop while also damaging them.

Resistance to Poison Manipulation - Is unaffected by Raijuu's poison, even with its ancient nature. She can also survive within Former Hell, where the air is so toxic that it's more dangerous than geysers that eject toxic gasses, that are also contaminated with vengeful spirits desires, which can produce chemicals such as arsenic, mercury, antimony, and lead, obviously poisonous and dangerous chemicals (which she can also survive around just fine)

Resistance to Electricity Manipulation - Is able to be completely covered in electricity by her Raijuu.

Resistance to Magma Manipulation and Extreme Heat - Oni regularly bathe in pools of magma with no issue. Youkai are also incapable of experiencing heatstroke, or at least, the effects of heat stroke would be ineffectual to them.

Resistance to Subjective Reality & Transformation - Youkai were once bound to the imagination of humans, with the myths and stories about them defining their forms and characteristics. However, after moving to Gensokyo, youkai were unbound from this system, and became capable of changing their forms and characteristics on their own to whatever they wish.

Resistance to Transmutation, Soul Manipulation, and Purification - Kasen can survive unscathed in Hell, which slowly purifies one’s soul into crystal.

Resistance to Death Manipulation - Kasen is completely unaffected being within the proximity of Yuyuko, who’s mere touch induces death, and can even passively kill those just nearby her.

Resistance to Corruption - Youkai are completely unaffected by the Hourai Elixir, which grants one deathless immortality and taints them with impurity.

Resistance to Mind Manipulation & Emphatic Manipulation - Is unaffected by being near phantoms, which can passively destroy the mind of and change the emotions of anybody they’re near.

Unconventional Resistance to Dream Manipulation - Considering how Dreams work within Touhou, manipulating or altering Kasen’s Dreams would just be affecting Dream Kasen, a separate, but equal entity to the real thing, and could potentially drag her into the fight.

Unconventional Resistance to Necromancy - While technically completely useless to her and not really beneficial in any way, it’s funny to mention. Youkai don’t leave corpses behind upon death, instead being completely obliterated, meaning there would be nothing to control.

Possible Resistance to Sleep Manipulation, Soul Manipulation, & BFR - While she technically never fights Doremy in her Antimony of Common Flowers route, she scales to or is comparable to several people who do, and is still capable of resisting these effects if she fights Doremy in Versus Mode. Doremy attacks with Dream Souls, which instantly put a person to sleep and sends their soul to the Dream World.

Fleetway Sonic Feats & Stats:

With their abilities out of the way, let’s talk about the pure power behind these two!

BASE FORM SONIC:

AP / DURABILITY:

-Sonic frequently pulls his punches at nearly all points, due to most of the robots he fights withholding Mobians that he doesn’t want to injure, and his inherent want to not kill others. He actively avoids killing Robotnik when given the chance, for instance. The only times he’ll let loose and use his full power are against Robots with nobody inside, or opponents he knows he can’t kill by regular means.

-Sonic’s spin dash is compared to that of a tank shell, and then instantly fragments and shatters a mech upon spindashing it (0.011 tons of TNT, Small Building Level)

-Easily one-shots most badniks, and can easily shrug off hits from them. Badniks are capable of shattering doors in a single kick, which takes this much energy (Wall Level)

-Upscales from Tails, who can destroy a tank in a single punch and easily destroy badniks. (At least Wall Level)

-Kicks an Item Box containing an evil copy of himself out of orbit and into space with his Super Sonic Kick (City Block Level to Small City Level)

-Was able to suppress and survive the explosion of a city destroying missile (City Level)

-Is able to evenly match and take blows from Knuckles the Echidna, completely destroying the surrounding area in their first fight, and later on even to the point of being able to tank a completely serious blow to the face just so he could use the momentum of the punch to knock out someone they were chasing, and be almost completely unaffected. Knuckles was able to cause a fissure and smash off a chunk of The Floating Island with a single punch. (7.58 Gigatons, Island Level)

-Is able to battle Metallixes, robotic clones made to be his exact equal. A single Metallix scales to 1/13th of the Alpha Device (as it takes 13 Metallixes to power up the device in the first place), which has enough power to blow up Miracle Planet (1.47 Zettatons, Small Planet Level)

SPEED:

-Catches an arrow shot by Amy just before it would have connected, the bow appears to be a Recurve Bow, which has a shot speed of around 65.2272 m/s (Subsonic)

-Upon putting on his friction reducing Power Sneakers for the first time, he proceeded to run up to 761 MPH, hitting mach 1 speeds and breaking the sound barrier (Transonic)

-Is able to easily dodge gunfire on several occasions (Subsonic to Sub-Relativistic*)

-Grabbed all the fragments of an explosion after it imploded before they could reach a single person. This object acts similar to a grenade with its explosion shooting out spikes similarly to shrapnel. Assuming the spikes shoot out at a similar speed as shrapnel, that would mean Sonic would have caught multiple projectiles moving around 7900 m/s before they could kill anyone in the immediate radius, we’ll assume 20 meters, the fatal radius of a grenade. (at least Hypersonic +)

-Ran across the entirety of Miracle Planet, a small planetoid, in a matter of seconds (at least Massively Hypersonic +)

-Was able to dodge blasts of electricity, and redirect natural lightning (Massively Hypersonic +)

-Ran across half the Earth in about 4.5 seconds (Mach 12,979, Sub-Relativistic)

-Dodges Metal Sonic’s laser beams (8% Speed of Light, Sub-Relativistic+)

-Sonic, after pushing himself to go faster than ever before, ran so fast that time seemed frozen to him, even while he freely moved around to explore the city. In the time it takes for a single second to pass, he processes about 40 words of thought. Through combining the average time of speaking for the 40 words he processes, and the speed it would take to process that in about a single second, alongside him moving in that timeframe, he would have had to be moving at around 0.99C. (Relativistic)

*This wide distinction is due to the fact that it's never specified if Badnik guns in Fleetway utilize bullets or a type of laser beam. While in comic panels they typically have the properties of lasers, I still accounted for the possibility of just being stylistic bullet shots

SUPER SONIC:

AP / DURABILITY:

-Is able to effortlessly tear apart or one shot opponents that Sonic struggled to defeat.

-Is never so much as challenged or even scratched by a single character in the entire duration of the comic’s run, and is vastly above every non-Chaos Emerald empowered character in the series.

-Manhandled Knuckles in a fight, who’s able to punch off entire sections of the Floating Island (Island Level)

-Nearly destroyed Metallix Mark 2 in a single spin attack, and then immediately decapitated him in a single punch, who was siphoning power from the Master Emerald, the same artifact that granted Super Sonic his power. (Small Planet Level)

-Has effortlessly tanked hits from Sonic in battle (Small Planet Level)

-Easily overwhelmed Brutus, tearing off one of his arms in a single punch. Brutus’ armor is made of Megatal, an absurdly tough super metal that’s stronger than any other on Mobius. Brutus could easily handle Sonic in a fight and was more powerful than Cybernik the Shortfuse, who could battle Knuckles fairly. (Small Planet Level)

-Threw the moon out of orbit, destroying Mobius on impact* (1.41 Ninatons of TNT to 141 Ninatons of TNT, Large Planet Level to Dwarf Star Level

-Is powered by the Complete Emeralds, the same emeralds that gave God Robotnik his powers, which allowed him to destroy, rewrite, and recreate the universe and the Special Zone (which is its own universe) (Low Multiversal):

*While this feat is performed in an illusion, it is made abundantly clear that Super Sonic could easily replicate it as desired, and it fits in line with other feats he has performed, making it valid for use.

SPEED:

-Significantly upscales from any other feat performed by any other character in the series, due to being significantly stronger and faster than everyone else, only ever being tagged or hit because he holds back out of sadism. This includes every single feat of Sonic’s.

-Can weave around several laser beams at once (at least Sub-Relativistic +)

-Scales to God Robotnik via being powered by the same energy source, who is able to move regularly at sizes that completely dwarf planets such as Mobius (which is the size of Earth). Even moving regularly at sizes of this magnitude would constitute moving faster than light. (FTL)

-Would scale far above Amy and Tekno traveling an interstellar/intergalactic distance in a manually piloted UFO. While an exact number is indeterminable for this feat for a variety of reasons, they still clearly travel an interstellar/intergalactic distance in a relatively short amount of time, as stars, planets, and nebulas are passed, and they clearly enter our solar system. Depending on the minimum number we use, even the most conservative options for this feat ranges from anywhere from thousands of times the speed of light, to billions of times sol. (MFTL+, ranging from 38,000 x FTL to 22,000,000,000 x FTL)

Kasen Ibaraki Feats & Stats:

One thing to note before we begin to go over Kasen’s stats. I will mention “Dream Versions” of characters relatively often in this breakdown. This is because the events of  Touhou 15.5, one of the games Kasen takes part in, involves several Dream Versions of characters breaking out of the Dream World and running amok in the Real World. It’s noted several times throughout the series dreams are equal to reality, and Dream Versions of characters are complete equals to the Real Versions of them, down to everything including combat ability. This means that scaling to them is completely acceptable.

AP & DURABILITY

DIRECT FEATS:

-One-shot a lightning lizard and tanked its upon death explosion at point blank radius, and was completely unaffected. A lightning lizard is capable of causing spontaneous combustion within humans, as well as creating a localized fire that can nearly instantly burn a house to the ground. (at least Small Building Level)

-Even in her base form, she notably holds back against Reimu and near everyone else she fights, as to not use her true strength.

-Was able to restrain Ibaraki-Douji’s Arm, Ibaraki-Douji having been noted as Reimu herself to have “crazy strength” and to be ridiculous on more than one occasion. Said arm also cratered and shattered a large portion of stone in a single punch.

-Oni are directly stated by Akyuu, the chronicler of Gensokyo, to be the strongest creatures in Gensokyo, and this statement is generally upheld throughout the series. This would make Oni superior to even other youkai such as vampires, who are stated to be able to uproot 1000 old trees single handedly, and centuries old trees within Gensokyo are gigantic.

-While holding back, can fight Marisa*, and can tank blasts from her Mini-Hakkero, which is stated to have enough power to vaporize a mountain, which would require this much energy (Small Country Level). Marisa can also casually toss around two huge planets with her Spell Card Magic Space “Asteroid Belt” (Large Planet Level).

-Is able to create her own Senkai, a personal pocket realm which are large enough to contain entire moons (Large Planet Level) or starry skies (Multi-Solar System Level). Individual Senkais can also be infinitely enlarged using space-time manipulation (Universe Level+)

-Has fought and easily defeated Mononobe no Futo, considering her a “low level Hermit”, even when Futo intentionally targeted all of her weak points. Toyosatomimi no Miko, one of the most notable, revered, and powerful Hermits known directly stated that Kasen’s power far surpassed her own. Futo and Miko are both capable of creating their own infinitely sized Senkai in of themselves and are more than capable characters within the world of Gensokyo (Universe Level+)

-Has directly fought Tenshi Hinanawi, and has also fought several characters that either scale to her, such as Joon & Shion, Suika Ibuki, Reimu Hakurei, and Yukari Yakumo. Tenshi’s Dream Self, in a show of power before fighting Joon & Shion, shook the entirety of Heaven, threatening to completely destroy it. There is a lot going into this feat, so buckle in, it needs three of its own bullet points, but first I’ll cover heaven itself. Heaven is a collection of separate realms that exists somewhere above Earth. This means that in shaking and being able to destroy this realm, Tenshi would have:

*The number 8 in Japanese culture represents the sacred and infinite, and while it could be argued that the number of Gods would be infinite, and thus, Heaven would contain an infinite amount of infinitely sized heavens, and thus a Multiversal + / 2A structure as opposed to a Multiversal / 2B structure, at no point in the series is the infinite definition of 8 used when referring to the amount of Gods/Heavens, only the term countless is used, which is an important distinction. So while there is a possible argument for Heaven being 2A, it’s not one I want to safely take until there is more evidence in its favor.

SCALING:

-Has fought Fujiwara no Mokou, a Hourai Immortal who:

-Is comparable to Suika Ibuki, another Oni and one of the other Four Devas of the Mountain, and notably hasn’t been sober since ancient history. Suika has:

-As previously stated, Kasen, while holding back, had Marisa Kirisame fight her. Marisa has:

Marisa has done far more than this, but to avoid repeating information from my previous blog and repeating information in the upcoming scaling chain, I’ll leave it at this.

-In her Oni Form, completely and utterly bitched Reimu Hakurei. During the entire fight Reimu was swatted around, her attacks were almost constantly no-sold, and even her biggest attack barely did any damage, to the point Reimu began to believe the fight to be unwinnable. Reimu would have lost the fight had Kasen not intentionally ensured Reimu would gain access to the only thing that could seal her arm before the fight. Despite Reimu being Gensokyo’s prime incident resolver, and incredibly capable fighter with some of the most impressive magical abilities in the series, she was nearly powerless against Kasen’s full power in Oni Form. Reimu has:

This is a very abridged listing of Reimu’s feats, she’s done so much more than this

*There are currently no calcs available for these feats, and I was unable to make an exact calc for myself during the time I had to make this blog, so I made the best estimation I possibly could based on the knowledge I had.

SPEED:

DIRECT FEATS:

-Flew across an entire city in a short time span casually (idk lol)

-Laughably superior to fairies, who can react to and deflect light-based projectiles (Relativistic +)

-Can dodge attacks from Marisa such as her Master Spark, which is a beam of light with all the properties of a light-speed laser (at least FTL)

(she actually doesn’t have a lot of directly performed speed feats…. Coming from a slice of life manga and fighting games will do that)
SCALING:

-Scales above both Marisa and Reimu (and is notably superior to Reimu in Oni Form, having completely dismantled her in combat while seeming very casual the entire time). These two have:

Infinite Speed stats for Touhou are relatively poorly understood for those who aren’t familiar with the franchise, and thus, may seem strange to the uninitiated. Here is a blog dedicated to discussing the validity of infinite speed by covering the arguments against infinite speed in great detail to defend its validity.

*It should be noted that, inherently, this number is a massive lowball, as it doesn’t take into account variable universe sizes, such as Amitabha scaling for Heaven, and caps out at 7.3 billion people, ignoring any possible extra humans or youkai, or any beings from other realms, as simply there is no way to reasonably calculate these variables, so we went with the absolute bare minimum numbers possible for this calc.

Fleetway Sonic Weaknesses:

Sonic, as all people do, has plenty of weaknesses, both in base form, and in Super Form. In Base Form, despite his ability to use strategy to quite good effect, he is very cocky and narcissistic, leading him to occasionally overestimate himself and make brash moves in combat, or flat out rush in without a plan. He is also notably weak to power or energy absorption, as if his powers are absorbed, he is reverted to his state before the accident, just a normal, albeit very fast, brown quilled hedgehog. He’ll be unable to use any of his techniques, significantly less powerful, most of his super speed will be gone, and he’ll generally be much less of a threat. Power Nullification is also a threat to him, as when God Robotnik stole his powers, it not only removed his speed, but also his skill, making him completely unable to use any of his techniques at all, despite still having his unique blue hedgehog physiology. If he’s ever stressed or pushed into a corner, he can be forcefully transformed into Super Sonic, losing control of himself.

On Super Sonic’s end, he has a similar issue to Base Sonic, in that, despite his ability to use some higher mental functions like planning and battle tactics… he really doesn’t! He very rarely, if ever utilizes a plan in combat, only ever doing so if pressured to. He is very arrogant and sadistic, often holding back to prolong his opponent’s suffering, which can leave him open to counterattacks. He also generally doesn’t utilize the full power offered by the Complete Chaos Emeralds much, while his overwhelming strength, flight, and eye-beams see plenty of use, he’s never actually utilized many of the other abilities of Chaos Energy himself, despite definitely being capable of doing so. If Super Sonic is a separate individual from Sonic, since he’s a being of pure Chaos Energy, he can die should he eventually run out of Chaos Energy, though it takes several months for this to get close to happening.

Despite everything, magically, Fleetway Sonic actually does not have a weakness to water. He can swim just fine and even has a specialized water suit. So he has one thing over basically every other version of Sonic, at least. You might be stuck with the demon buddy, but you get that one. However, he’s also British, which is minus several points.

Kasen Ibaraki Weaknesses:

Kasen, despite how she might present herself, is not flawless. Kasen, while kind, definitely is a little haughty at points, which might cause her to be shortsighted and try to solve things her own way, despite things not necessarily needing to be “solved”, such as her trying to train Reimu for perceiving her as “having too much worldly desire” or when she nearly inadvertently caused the destruction of Gensokyo by trying to solve the Urban Legend Incident herself.

Her Artificial Arm will rot and become useless if she doesn’t drink from her Ibaraki Medicine Box frequently. She’s also subject to losing control of her body when in her Oni Form, due to the dominance of the personality of Ibaraki-douji. She’s especially weak to the Onikirimaru blade, the sword that severed her arm in the first place. Even a shard of it is powerful enough to lop off her arm and seal it away yet again.

She also seems to share the same weaknesses of most Oni, or at least, still has the psychological fear of them, those being beans and sardine heads pierced by holly branches.

She will also fold and take in any animal she finds cute, because she has no self control.

Various Major Questions:

Could Kasen’s Guiding of Animals Allow Her To Command Sonic?:

Very unlikely, no. Sonic has several mental resistances when it comes to any form of mind control, brainwashing, mental attacks, really any method of attempting to control him tends to fail just by his own will and mental fortitude. While he’s been affected by things such as possession, and Super Sonic was affected by an extremely powerful hypnosis, those aren’t quite what Kasen’s ability would quantify as. Even with how impressive Kasen’s ability is, Sonic should be able to resist her affects solidly, and Super Sonic would likely be completely unaffected by such attempts.

Can Kasen Teleport?:

This is a question presented largely because within WaHH, Kasen seems to get a kick out of just, appearing and disappearing near instantly. She does this a lot. Like, it is borderline comical. While it’s never explained if this is a type of teleportation or just pure speed, it’s likely just her dipping out of the situation through speed. There’s generally no showcased evidence of her teleporting other than these instances of her vanishing and reappearing, and they’re all generally used as a gag within the series. This is likely nothing more than just really fast movement.

Can Sonic Even Hit Kasen?:

This is something that was discovered incredibly late into the matchup’s research period, but Base Form Sonic… likely can’t even hit Kasen in the first place, not normally at least. Kasen’s existence as a youkai means that she’s an incorporeal being composed of spirit that’s unbound from the confines of the material will, and can even become a black mist at will. Sonic consistently shows an inability to affect incorporeal entities, usually phasing right through ghosts. While he could still affect her via attack redirection and some various haxx means, physically punching her is likely not an option. Super Sonic on the other hand, likely should be able to, through indirect means or not. While we never see him get to fight a non-corporeal entity, his more powerful haxx such as reality manipulation, when commandeered by God Robotnik, was able to rewrite both the universe and the special zone, likely including all the non-corporeal entities within. Logistically, even if you have reservations of Super Sonic being able to punch Kasen in the face or not, his Chaos Abilities ensure that he can still affect Kasen at the very least. Something like this could also logistically just be ignored for an animated fight, as Youkai being incorporeal is something that’s generally underlooked in Touhou due to most characters just having NPI, meaning it's likely not that big a hit against this MU.

Could Sonic Disarm Kasen’s Molecules?:

Sonic consistently shows extremely solid control over vibration manipulation, down to a molecular level. He’s used this to loosen and weaken ropes on many occasions, and has even used it to weaken the molecular structure of chains he was captured with, allowing him to shatter them. That must naturally raise the question, couldn’t he just grab Kasen, and vibrate her at a ridiculous frequency, disarming her molecules in the process and killing her? He’s used lesser versions of this concept before, like when we rapidly vibrated a strange plastic-like man to disrupt his body. As inventive a wincon as that is, it’s just not something that could happen in this matchup. For one, even if he could do so, Kasen’s regeneration, immortality, and resurrections would just bring her back from such an attack, but likely, Kasen wouldn’t even be directly affected by this herself. Her Youkai physiology would likely make her immune to any fuckery with her molecular structure, as Youkai are described as “fluctuations”, and are composed of particles completely separate to that of most matter. Kasen’s complete control over the form she takes means that even if he disrupted her current molecular makeup, she could just… re-alter it herself. Youkai lacking fundamental human biology such as brains or DNA also means Sonic couldn’t just scramble her brains or anything like that. While Sonic’s vibration abilities would be useful in this fight, they wouldn’t carry him that far.

Could the Chaos Emeralds Absorb Oni Kasen’s Evil?:

Ignoring how unlikely it would be for Sonic to be carrying the Chaos Emeralds in the first place to do so, this… actually should be possible. The Chaos Emeralds’ would likely slowly sap the evil within Oni Kasen away and make her more like her normal, kind self. The issue here is just the applicability. It’s unlikely something like this could be done in the middle of combat, as it seems to take at least a period of time to fully absorb the evil from particularly evil entities, such as Captain Plunder and his crew. While it would drain her evil, it would likely take time to do so. Not to mention, the impracticality of bringing the Chaos Emeralds into a fight. In Fleetway, the Chaos Emeralds are incredibly unstable, and if they’re not kept in stabilizing conditions like extreme cold or the sanctum of the Floating Island, their instability will worsen, to the point that they will create a chain reaction of releasing Chaos Energy, before warping to the Special Zone. This released Chaos Energy also happens to be negative in nature, as being exposed to a large blast of it was exactly what created Super Sonic within Sonic in the first place. So it’s very likely that attempting to do this would not only A. Not absorb Kasen’s evil fast enough, but also B. Possibly result in a negative Chaos Energy blast connecting with Kasen, either empowering her with Chaos Energy, reverting her evil self, or making her even MORE dastardly. It’s just a dangerous gamble to make, and would even be one Base Sonic and especially not Super Sonic would consider.

Could Kasen Prevent Sonic From Manipulating Her Senkai?:

Considering the way Senkai works, and what we know about what Kasen can do with hers, Hermits generally have full control over their own Senkai, being able to manipulate and expand it to whatever size they desire and even control details within down to the degree of the seasons and weather of a region experience. Shouldn’t her full control over this realm make Super Sonic unable to manipulate, rewrite, affect or fuck with her Senkai in any meaningful way? No, actually. Despite Kasen’s control over her own Senkai, nothing has shown that her Senkai is unable to be manipulated by others or external factors, in fact, quite the opposite. Komachi Onozuka was able to manipulate distance within Kasen’s Senkai, doing so to decompress the thickness of the door to her house, to bypass the magical seal on it. This means no, her Senkai is not immune to change or manipulation, and others with the abilities necessary to do so could absolutely change or manipulate her Senkai if desired.

Is Super Sonic Invulnerable?:

Most iterations of Super Sonic, from the mainline Games, to the Archie Comics, and maybe even the IDW Comics, Super Sonic is stated and shown to be completely invulnerable to harm. Shouldn’t Fleetway Sonic be the same? Well, no actually. At no point in the series is it ever mentioned or insinuated that Super Sonic is invulnerable to harm completely. In general, Fleetway’s Super Sonic just has monstrously high durability within his own verse, and considering that nothing within the series ever challenges him, or even so much as puts a scratch on him at any point, he’s never given a chance to show off potential invulnerability. And no, a line like “Nothing can harm Super Sonic!” is not a solid justification for invulnerability. So no, Fleetway Super Sonic hasn’t showcased invulnerability, just very high durability.

Can Super Sonic Use God Robotnik’s Abilities?:

A question that occasionally comes up in regards to Fleetway Super Sonic, is that many of his highest tier stats and much of his ridiculous haxx come from scaling off of God Robotnik. This must raise the question within some people, is it fair to give Sonic these abilities? Especially when he’s utilized almost none of them himself? Well, yes, it is, with only a couple exceptions. God Robotnik is powered by the Complete Chaos Emeralds, he is only able to use any of these abilities because of his empowerment by said Emeralds. As soon as his connection to the Emeralds was severed by Knuckles using the Gray Emerald, Robotnik lost all of his abilities as God Robotnik. Super Sonic, as noted, gained his powers from the Complete Emeralds, having absorbed a large dosage of its energy as well. While Super Sonic has never utilized many of the reality warping abilities netted from the Chaos Emerald’s Chaos Energy, that’s likely more so due to him never having a chance to display said abilities in the comic, as well as his personality preferring to dismantle foes physically rather than with his powers. Since Super Sonic never faces an opponent anywhere near his level at any point in Fleetway’s duration, he’s never put in a situation where he’d need to use anything but his brute force and most basic abilities.

Moreover, wielders of Chaos Energy netted by the Complete Emeralds have showcased shared abilities, with God Robotnik showing himself to be capable of Super Sonic’s eye-beams, which he only gained after being empowered by the Complete Emeralds for the first time. Chaos, after absorbing all the Complete Emeralds and becoming Perfect Chaos, was also immediately able to begin using the Emeralds’ reality warping effects by immediately reshaping Robotnik’s castle in his own image, and after absorbing his energy, Super Sonic was crackling with the same aura that Perfect Chaos was. It’s very likely that Super Sonic has all the same abilities that Perfect Chaos and God Robotnik had access to, due to how it’s simply the Emeralds’ Chaos Energy granting the powers at all. There are two exceptions to this ability sharing rule, however.

Is Super Sonic Omnipresent And Nigh-Omniscient?:

Two notable facets of God Robotnik that aren’t showcased by Perfect Chaos or Super Sonic at any point, would be God Robotnik’s Omnipresence and Nigh-Omniscience. After absorbing the power of the emeralds, Robotnik becomes instantly aware of every event happening past and present, but is incapable of seeing into the future, as well as suddenly existing everywhere in the universe, able to hear anyone at any time and appear anywhere and any place. Perfect Chaos simply never gets the chance to showcase if he can do this or not, considering he had a total of maybe 6 pages of screentime, but Super Sonic at no point ever shows any qualities of being omnipresent or nigh-omniscient.

If I had to make an educated guess as to why these two specific abilities go unshared and are likely not part of Super Sonic’s or Perfect Chaos’ kit, it would be that it’s very likely that the Emeralds can grant specific abilities by enhancing a specific aspect of their wielder. In Robotnik’s case, his incredibly high IQ and overseeing dictator personality gifted him omnipresence and nigh-omniscience, with him being unable to see his own future due to his own hubris. Super Sonic actually has a special quality that no other Chaos Emerald empowered entity has showcased before as well, absorption. Super Sonic can easily absorb the Chaos Energy of other entities, such as when he completely absorbed Perfect Chaos’ energy to recharge himself to full power. In short, Super Sonic should be capable of most abilities netted through God Robotnik/Perfect Chaos, with the exception of Omnipresence and Nigh-Omniscience, as those appear to be character specific abilities just as Super Sonic’s energy absorption seems specific to him.

Kasen Ibaraki vs Fleetway Sonic Breakdown:

Time to take everything we’ve gone over and compare the two, before coming to our final conclusion!:

Fleetway Sonic:

"Change reality anyway you like Robotnik! Whatever you do, I'll still fight you! And somehow, I'll win! Because no matter how ridiculous the situation. I'll never give up Robotnik! I'll never give up!

Advantages:
+Could nullify Kasen’s powers in Super Form, heavily lowering her statistics and affecting her magical or spiritual abilities. Could also do this to Kasen’s summons.
+Can resist Kasen’s fear manipulation in base, and be completely unaffected in Super form
+Can resist Kasen’s ability to guide animals, and could not be commanded by her
+Could likely resist the mental effects of Spirit Manipulation
+Should be able to resist the poison of Kasen’s Raijuu, at least for an extended amount of time
+Duplication and Creation/Summoning could allow him to reduce the numbers gap and prevent himself from getting overwhelmed by Kasen’s array of summonable pets, potentially even outnumbering her.
+Super Sonic can resist Kasen’s time slowing shenanigans and even destroy the effects by turning himself into an Electron Bomb.
+Low Godly regeneration would make killing him by normal physical means moot.
+Vibration manipulation would allow him to negate many of Kasen’s projectiles with force fields, and he could likely reality warp many attacks out of existence as well
+Can redirect many of Kasen’s attacks and projectiles with the Speed Cocoon
+Kintobor Computer could potentially relay useful information during the fight
+His monologue against God Robotnik about never giving up is one of the rawest moments in the entire Sonic franchise and I am being 100% serious
+Chaos is the best track in the Vs Sonic.EXE Mod by a country mile, even the instrumental is godly it's synonymous with Fleetway as a whole by now (Fight or Flight & Prey are good too tho)

Iffy Elements:
-Could potentially affect Kasen by rewriting her from existence with reality warping, though she debatably has counters to this

-Has a wide variety of abilities that could definitely catch Kasen off guard, but she has counters to many of them or would be unaffected by most.

-Could potentially fuck with her dreams, but this wouldn’t gain any advantage in a fight, and would just present it's own problems (check Kasen’s section)

-While Base Form Sonic likely cannot touch Kasen via Youkai Incorporeality, Super Sonic should be able to work around this just fine himself

-Could affect Kasen’s Senkai with his reality warping, but this likely wouldn’t reap many rewards.

-Can counter Kasen’s weather manipulation with his own

-Both are resistant to BFR due to having methods of dimensional travel or portal creation

-Depending on where the battle takes place, much of the Kintobor Computer’s useful functionalities could be limited, since many of his sensors and methods of observation are located on Mobius

Disadvantages:
-Gets shitstomped in base form by Kasen & Oni Kasen, is weaker in Super form
-Is significantly slower in base and Super form, even with generous numbers for Sonic
-Cannot resist the effects on the soul of Spirit Manipulation

-Has no counter to Kasen removing his soul from his body and crushing it
-Cannot resist Kasen’s Perfect Possession

-Super Sonic has never actually used many of the Chaos Emeralds’ reality warping abilities, and would be unlikely to use them in character unless he was truly pushed into a corner, due to preferring to physically dismantle his opponents and his severely arrogant nature

-Super Sonic, while capable of some intelligent thought and planning, rarely ever uses it, preferring to use berserker rage and overwhelming physical might to defeat his opponents

-Super Sonic would be unlikely to ask the Kintobor Computer for assistance

-Kasen could very easily overwhelm him via unfair danmaku and her speed advantage, even though he has the capacity to negate or erase her attacks
-Is British (probably why his Super Form has fucked up snaggleteeth)

-Got trolled out of having immeasurable speed and being star level in the same arc by a clone

-Is legit borderline emotionally and verbally abusive to Tails most of the comic, like what the fuck

Kasen Ibaraki:

“I've always been looking for my arm. But not the unsealed arm, or the living arm that moves on its own. What I wanted was what's in this box, my dried up mummified arm. To keep it right beside me, like my own death. To take both opposing paths to their extremes. For that itself, is the way of the Hermit.”

Advantages:
+Shitstomps Base Sonic, and is stronger than Super Sonic, with or without Oni Kasen
+Outspeeds Base Sonic to a ridiculous point, and is still significantly faster than Super Sonic
+Could bypass Super Sonic’s low godly regeneration through destroying his soul via Spirit Manipulation, or by separating his soul from his body and then crushing it with her Artificial Arm, destroying it entirely and removing it from the reincarnation cycle.
+Her youkai physiology, immortality, and mid-godly regen would be absurdly hard for Sonic to bypass.
+Can recover herself from having her powers nullified via drinking from the Ibaraki Box of Medicine, restoring her strength and health. She could also just heal off any damages taken during the fight with this.
+Is physically stronger than Super Sonic, meaning she could overpower any attempts at a telekinetic hold
+Her Hermit immortality would make her unaffected by age manipulation
+Her acausality would make her immune to being time huh’d?
+Can resist any and all time shenanigans, rewinding, fast forwarding, and freezing would all be ineffective against her
+Could likely resist Super Sonic’s mind control
+Could completely resist any attempts to transmute or transform her
+While her pets may have trouble with them, Kasen herself shitstomps all of Super Sonic’s potential summoning options
+Basically becomes Reimu’s Mom by the end of Wild and Horned Hermit
+Has a sweet tooth, and that’s adorable.

Iffy Elements:
-Kasen could potentially resist having her existence altered or rewritten by Super Sonic’s reality warping due to her Youkai Physiology.

-Kasen would be unaffected by any manipulation or alterations to her dreams, as they would just bring Dream Kasen into the equation due to how dreams in Touhou work, meaning Sonic would just be picking a fight with a second Kasen at this point.

-Can counter Super Sonic’s weather manipulation with her own
-Both are resistant to BFR due to having methods of dimensional travel or portal creation
-While Kasen has superior battlefield control compared to Base Sonic due to her superior mobility in the air, limiting Sonic’s options, this point is moot once Super Sonic gets involved.

Disadvantages:

-While she can restore herself from it, she is still completely susceptible to being power nulled by Super Sonic, which could leave her open to attack should he prevent her from drinking from her Ibaraki Box of Medicine
-Super Sonic’s duplication and creation/summoning could potentially put her at a large numbers disadvantage, and while she can deal with his summons fine enough, Super Sonic duplications could be very troublesome

-Theoretically, if Kasen had the shard of Onikirimaru still on her person, and Super Sonic were to sort out her weakness, he could steal the blade off of her or simply create his own variant of it, and then use it to seal her arm away.

-Got trolled out of being the extra boss of Ten Desires in favor of Mamizou

-Is staunchly against drug use (unbased)

Confronting Yourself Track Art by Pasbros

(if you have a fanwork you'd like to see added to this tributes section, let me know, I'll try and periodically update this blog with them!)

Verdict:

“Just because you don’t see the beast, it doesn’t mean the beast isn’t there. Be careful playing with somebody’s kindness, they have tamed their beast”

There’s a lot of moving parts to this fight, but it's best to start with the easiest angle to discuss, the stats. Both Kasen and Sonic had impressive showings, but Kasen simply has the edge in the stat trinity here. While Super Sonic’s scaling to God Robotnik completely toying with two separate universes and their timelines, casually destroying and rewriting them several times, making him Low Multiversal, Kasen just outmuscles that power significantly. Being able to fight and defeat Tenshi or characters that scale to her automatically puts her at a significantly higher degree of power. Not only is this a multiversal feat, it's about as high into multiversal you can get before reaching infinite multiversal, due to the uncountable nature of the number of realms residing within Heaven. Even if we were to use the blatantly incorrect lowball of at least 8 million universes, that’s still putting her above Super Sonic’s shown output to a ludicrous degree. Fleetway Sonic just simply has not shown levels of power to this degree.

Even if one were to try and make the very flimsy argument that Super Sonic would somehow scale to the Limbo Dimension, a 4.5D construct that is the space between all worlds and dimensions. However, this construct is introduced after God Robotnik performed his universal tomfoolery, and there’s no implications or statements that he ever affected this construct. Even if one were to consider scaling him to this regardless, Touhou’s higher dimensional scaling is much more solid, and it can net characters anywhere from 5D to 10/11D levels of power, which would just be far beyond anything Super Sonic could scrounge for.

Surprisingly enough, despite Sonic’s nature as a speedster, and his quite impressive catalog of speed feats across the Fleetway Comics, Kasen also has him beat in this category. Even if you were to completely disclude her Infinite speed scaling, that would simply knock down her speed to 22.5 Septillion x FTL, far outpacing Super Sonic’s potential highest end of 22 Billion x FTL (which of note, would only apply to his reaction/combat speeds, not his travel speeds as well, as Amy and Tekno’s feat is entirely reaction-based), meaning that Kasen would still be at least a quadrillion times faster than Super Sonic, and just as a reminder, that’s her lowest end, completely ignoring her Infinite Speed stats. While Sonic may be more skilled at utilizing his speed than Kasen is, Kasen isn’t able to manipulate her speed in as precise or effective ways as Sonic is able to, but his mastery over speed won’t save him from the fact that Kasen is simply just far faster than him, even if she’s not as skilled at utilizing her speed like he is. With or without finite numbers, Kasen takes speed by a wide margin, meaning that Kasen takes the stat trinity quite solidly.

However, stats were never going to be the full deciding factor in this fight, as neither character could clinch the victory simply by outmuscling the other and bludgeoning the other to death. Both characters have a cacophony of haxx at their disposal, regeneration that allows them to survive conventional bodily destruction, and immortality that would prevent stats from being the sole deciding factor here, meaning the ability and haxx clash is where things get truly interesting. So let's get into that now!

So first, it’d be best to get the major factors that could instantly end the fight out of the way. Any kind of mind manipulation, mind control, or emotional manipulation is unlikely to affect either combatant, due to both displaying numerous resistances to such effects, Sonic wouldn’t be able to mind control Kasen to do his bidding, Kasen would be unable to control Sonic through her guiding of animals and would likely be unable to destroy his mind through spirit manipulation. Neither could BFR the other, as they both have counter measures to such things. If Kasen were to say, try and BFR Sonic to Hell, he could simply escape by teleporting and traveling through dimensions with either Mobian Rings, or warping himself to a different dimension with his powers as Super Sonic. Kasen has her own counters as well, she can use spatial manipulation to punch holes in the Hakurei Barrier, meaning she could likely punch through any attempted seals, she can create magical circles to teleport to entirely separate dimensions, and could simply access her own Senkai from wherever she’s sent to.

Super Sonic wouldn’t be able to “Time Huh?” Kasen, due to her acausality, killing her in the past or future wouldn’t affect her present in any meaningful way, and her immortality as a Hermit would mean she wouldn’t die from being aged forward in time, allowing her to resist any kind of time fuckery Super Sonic might try. Sonic has also displayed a resistance to fear manipulation in base form, but also a complete immunity to it in Super Form, meaning she wouldn’t be able to earn an instant win by absorbing Sonic’s spirit by activating her fear aura right at the start of the fight. Their time manipulation abilities would also be negged by one another, Kasen due to resisting the effects of other Magical Circle users, and Super Sonic just being able to release a EMP nuke to cancel out the effects of the time manipulation. Kasen would be able to resist any attempt to transmute her due to being unaffected by several methods of transmutation, and her complete control over her form. Kasen’s superior physical abilities would also allow her to break out of any telekinetic hold Super Sonic could put her under as well.

Yeah, these two go back and forth a lot. While it may seem like their abilities perfectly counter one another, there’s a few that slip between one another’s resistances, unfortunately for Sonic, though, Kasen has more abilities he has no counter to. For one, neither Sonic nor Super Sonic has ever had any showings of resisting possession, meaning Kasen could absolutely use Perfect Possession, which would connect her to Sonic mentally and spiritually allowing her to assume full control of him. Sonic’s base form would likely be completely unable to damage Kasen by most means as well, due to her youkai incorporeality, though Super Sonic has plenty of means to affect her.

Sonic has a couple of notable abilities as well. His ability to duplicate himself and create a near endless stream of summons could absolutely allow him to create a massive numbers advantage between the two, even taking into account Kasen’s animal summons. While many of Sonic’s summons could be put down rather easily, duplications of Super Sonic would absolutely pose problems for her furry friends. One of the biggest boons in Sonic’s favor however, would be his ability to nullify and take away powers and skills. Kasen doesn’t seem to have an innate resistance to her powers being nullified, meaning that, if Super Sonic decided he had enough and snatched her powers away, she would completely be affected. However, she does have workarounds. Fortune could allow her to still cast magical attacks even with her powers nullified, as even without the other necessary aspects of magic, Fortune can still allow for spells to be cast. Her most notable workaround however, would be her Ibaraki Box of Medicine, which would restore her back to full health. Even if one were to argue it wouldn’t restore her strength to it's normal capacities, she would still be granted super-human oni-like strength, allowing her to still contend with Super Sonic regardless, and once her abilities are nullified once, she’ll certainly go for one of her wincons immediately.

Speaking of wincons, it's about time we discuss potential wincons for both characters. As stated before, neither opponent has the capacity to just kill the other through regular physical means. Super Sonic’s low godly regen ensures that even if his physical form is destroyed, he can regenerate it from his essence/energy (this also means Kasen couldn’t get a win just by splattering Sonic into a fine paste in base form, as Super Sonic would just reform from his energy immediately, now freed from the confines of Sonic’s body), while Kasen’s mid godly regeneration ensures she can regenerate from even complete and utter spiritual destruction. So that means this fight is less a matter of who can turn the other into a splatter on the pavement first, and will ultimately come down to who has the ability to bypass the other’s regeneration to land a permanent kill, and who would be most likely to get their wincon off first. Miraculously, both characters have at least one potential method each.

To start with Kasen’s wincons: Sonic also has absolutely no resistance to any kind of soul fuckery, an ability Kasen has in spades, and frankly, that’s the most damaging aspect against him. Spirit Manipulation means that every attack of Kasen’s is going to be passively sapping away his soul with every hit, and restoring Kasen’s in the process, eventually leading to his spirit being crushed and his soul completely destroyed, killing him. This would occur on every attack Kasen could throw out, from basic punches and kicks to any of her numerous amounts of Danmaku, essentially creating a snowball effect of making Sonic weaker and weaker until the inevitable destruction of his soul. Not to mention, if Kasen wanted to near immediately end the fight, nothing would stop her from simply separating Super Sonic’s Soul from his body and then immediately targeting it with her attacks while he can’t retaliate, or just immediately crush it with her Prosthetic Arm, obliterating his soul and instantly killing him.

Super Sonic on the other hand, has his reality warping, his one major potential wincon. God Robotnik’s reality reshaping abilities were so potent that the entire universe could be re-written to his whim, alongside everything within it. Couldn’t Super Sonic theoretically just rewrite Kasen’s physiology or just erase her from existence or history? While erasing Kasen from history would be useless due to her acausality allowing her to survive the effects of historical erasure and paradoxical events such as this, the other potential usages are more elaborate. Kasen has a few aspects about her physiology that might allow her to survive this. Youkai are composed of completely different types of particles than what is known, meaning manipulating them would likely be difficult, if not outright impossible by those of conventional understanding. Youkai are also able to freely decide and assume forms, altering their existence at will, meaning that any attempts to transform her into something else would likely be moot, as she could always reshape herself. It could be argued that this full control over her very existence could allow her to resist being written out of reality, and if not that, at the very least, it should prevent her from having her physiology/existence rewritten, however, this is uncertain. Kasen hasn’t had the chance to showcase an immunity to existence erasure or concept erasure like Marisa, Sakuya, Remilia, or Alice have, so just saying that because she scales to these characters, she should also have their resistances, isn’t a benefit that can be completely given to her without some serious questioning. This is a very coinflip element, the reality warping could affect her… but she could also be argued to resist it.

Now that we’ve gone over both character’s statistics, major notable abilities, and wincons, let's put this all together into a cohesive, final decision.

In spite of Sonic’s notable advantages with his potential to create a numbers advantage and possibly overwhelm Kasen with duplicates, his ability to nullify her powers and force her onto the back foot (despite her potential to restore herself), his vibration manipulation and reality warping allowing him to negate or warp many of Kasen’s attacks out of existence, and the possibility that he may be able to erase or rewrite her from existence for a win… he falls short in just about every other category. Kasen is far stronger, she’s far faster, is much more likely to actually utilize her haxx and abilities to instantly put the squeeze on Super Sonic, she resists nearly every other bit of haxx he can bring to the table, and she has multiple ways to instantly end the fight through decimating Super Sonic’s soul through her Spirit Manipulation, separating Super Sonic’s soul form his body, and crushing his soul with her Artificial Arm. It’s a much more likely scenario that Kasen would overwhelm Super with her superior stats, and her massively higher speed would allow her ample opportunity to get off one of her wincons to end the fight before Super Sonic could get the chance to pull off something that could potentially endanger Kasen.

One of the biggest things against Super Sonic however, would be his own damn personality. Despite having access to the full capabilities of the powers of the Complete Chaos Emeralds, Super Sonic almost never uses them, utilizing very minimal amounts of their abilities, and typically just energy projection related usages. He much prefers to physically dismantle his opponents and take joy in utterly dominating them with his overwhelming power, something he unfortunately won't be able to fall back on against Kasen, as she’s just significantly more powerful than he is by all metrics. Generally, it's very, very unlikely Super Sonic would use any of his notable Chaos Abilities unless truly pushed against the wall and fully aware that his death is at hand unless he uses them, and by that point, it would likely be too late for him to pull out a decisive win.

Ultimately, very few things are stopping Kasen from, upon near immediately realizing she can’t win through brute force alone, launching Super Sonic’s soul out of his body and then crushing it, or just overwhelming him with an absurd amount of undodgeable waves of danmaku and physical attacks, destroying his soul before he could reasonably counteract due to the speed gap, or just possessing him for an instant win via incap or just, destroying him after possessing him. Kasen has showcased herself to be far willing to utilize her haxx and abilities without restriction as well, unlike Super Sonic, meaning she wouldn’t be afraid to end the fight near instantly if required.

While Super Sonic puts up an excellent fight, has some major boons in his favor, and even a potential wincon with his reality warping, his own ego and unlikeliness to use his more potent Chaos Powers, alongside Kasen’s staggering speed and strength advantages, wider array of abilities, absurd wall of resistances, and clear cut and easily accessible wincons secure her the victory in this battle far more often than not.

THE WINNER IS…. KASEN IBARAKI!

Conclusion:

Hey everyone, sorry for taking so long on this blog! This was intended to be out at least 2 weeks ago by now, possibly even earlier, but things just kept getting in the way at an obnoxious rate, and while I almost had it out last week, Sonic Frontiers released and utterly snatched my soul and free time until I blasted through it, lol. Overall though, this was definitely one of my most extensive research periods for a blog, reading through an entire comic series and then having to pour over as much Touhou media as possible, including gaps in my knowledge like manga I had somehow not yet finished, was a pretty huge task, but one I had an absolute blast doing. Fleetway Sonic was an awesome read and I love Touhou and its world, so any time I get to delve even deeper into it is a joy for me, so I hope you all had a good time reading it.

I’m also putting some heavy consideration into making a sequel to this blog down the line, where I would just composite all of the Fleetway adjacent media, including the 4 Virgin Books, alongside all of Sonic the Comic Online, and see how Sonic would stack up to Kasen there. During the later stages of research for this blog (and by that I mean the last week or two before completion), I saw a few screenshots that indicate the Virgin Books may potentially have some cosmology information hidden within them, and apparently Sonic the Comic Online has a handful of MFTL+ calcs for Sonic, some potential infinite speed feats, new abilities, as well as potential Multiversal Stats? I’m not sure of the validity of any of this, but I’d be interested in looking into all of that material and see if it’d be worth making a second blog, as if all of that is true he could genuinely provide an even closer fight at that point, which might require utilizing the higher interpretations of Touhou’s stats. If you guys are interested in that, absolutely reply in the comments with said interest!

… Now that I’ve mentioned it, I should probably cover that now as well. Anyone who’s read my Marisa Kirisame vs Yuffie Kisaragi blog, probably noticed that I didn’t pull out some of Touhou’s much higher level stats. Touhou has an abundance of Tier 1 evidence, and thus, Tier 1 feats, especially with aspects having to do with the Dream World and higher (things Kasen absolutely scales to). I ultimately decided to exclude them from this blog for a few reasons. For one, they just simply weren’t necessary at all to include. Fleetway’s best stats weren’t scratching multiversal, so I had no reason to bring them up without potentially painting this MU as a stomp to newbies. For two, yeah, I didn’t want to potentially paint this MU as a stomp and potentially cause new people to become disinterested in this MU. I’d hope that by this point in the blog you’ll have realized why this MU is fucking rad, and that even if Kasen was Tier 1 he’d still have all the same advantages and disadvantages, just with bigger numbers attached. For three, I actually wanted to discuss Touhou’s lower and middle end statistics a little bit more, since they generally go over-looked with Touhou’s insane high stats. I also figured that presenting the general most reasonable stats for Touhou characters (Multiversal with Infinite Speed, and absurdly high MFTL+ if lowballed) would be the most acceptable way to go for introducing Touhou to people potentially unfamiliar with it, since this blog was largely made for the Death Battle Season 10 Champions vote in campaign for this MU, and also to hopefully be linked to a future commission track with Brandon.

Outside of ignoring Tier 1 feats/evidence, I tried to make up for that by going more into scaling chains and lower end feats that usually get overlooked, like the variety of tier 8-6 feats that lower tier characters in the series perform. I spent a lot of time sorting out Touhou scaling chains, and frankly had to leave out a lot of different characters Kasen scaled to. Such as Suika defeating Remilia, who was able to batter Watatsuki no Yorihime to the point of visibly being bruised and beaten (which would end up going into Tier 1 lol), or the redundant scaling chains that inevitably lead to Shinki’s destruction/creation of Makai, Kaguya’s Corridor Creation, or Doremy’s Dream destruction/creation, or Dream Tenshi Shaking Heaven. These feats scale to an absurd amount of characters, haha.

If you’re interested in seeing some of the reasoning for higher stats, go check out said blog! I also plan to post a generalized Touhou Feats Blog sometime down the line, that would collect all the various Touhou AP, Durability, Speed, and potentially lifting strength feats in one, cohesive place, that would also cover the various low and high ends you could take with them, such as what they would rate as if you weren’t to use infinitely sized universes and such. It’s going to be a fucking herculean task so it might be a ways out ( I’ve also got videos I want to make, games I’d like to play, personal life things to attend to, potentially other MU blogs to make, comics I’d like to read (Hellblazer has been damn good so far, I want to re-read Archie Sonic, and I need to read STCO as well), and just generally a lot of shit going on), so please bear with me.

I’d also like to give out thanks to a few people. @sukuviolence, also known as Fujiwara, who helped a lot in the research of this blog, generally helping me keep track on Touhou’s feats, being the one who found the evidence for multiversal heaven and much, much more in the first place, and also helped me sort out a lot of my research for STC. @originthehero did fucking fantastic work on my commission bringing the MU to life, the sprite renders spread throughout this blog were all commissioned from him. Finally, the goat @skukuy2 who is working on a truly excellent piece of art for this MU as well, which I’ll be sure to add to this blog as soon as he finishes it.

Overall, I hope you enjoyed this blog! I put an insane amount of effort into it, I tried to make it better sourced than my last blog (which is missing a lot of sources that it should have had due to it's rushed time table, I plan to fix that), generally more approachable to those who are unfamiliar, and I also had a blast reading through STC and WaHH in preparation for this blog. If you enjoyed it, and this blog isn’t posted TOO late, please consider campaigning for and voting for Kasen Ibaraki vs Fleetway Sonic in this Champions vote! If we don’t win, well, consider voting for it next year! Campaign for this MU as much as possible, push it around however you can! I think it's a wonderful blast of a MU with crazy potential and two incredibly fun franchises to discuss.

That’s all I’ve got to say, however, I’d like to do a little interest gauging test. I have a handful of MUs I’m interested in doing for my next blog, but I haven’t yet decided which matchup will absolutely be done next, so I figured I’d ask down below for replies on what you all would be most interested in me covering next. Don’t worry, as I plan to cover all of these in time, and don't be upset if the one that receives the most support isn’t the one I make a blog for next, but I generally just want to see what has the most interest. My current planned blog-worthy matchups are:

Kirby vs Toutetsu Yuuma (Kirby vs Touhou Project)

Archie Tails vs Ran Yakumo (Archie Sonic vs Touhou Project)

Jack Frost vs Cirno (Shin Megami Tensei vs Touhou Project)

Sonic vs Mario (Sonic the Hedgehog vs Super Mario)

That’s all of them for now! If any of these MUs getting a full look from me sounds interesting to you, let me know down below! I’d love to see what you guys are interested in. Be sure to mention your interest in a potential sequel to this blog with a full composite Fleetway Sonic vs Kasen Ibaraki as well! Thanks for your time, and I hope you support Kasen Ibaraki vs Fleetway Sonic for the Champion Vote of Death Battle Season 10!

  2. just remembered that Super Sonic s'max speed is likely around 116x trillions FTL cuz Santa Clause was able to across Sonic's main universe which that took the whole night so he must be able to do much better than him....

  3. Hey there! Wanted to comment so I could state my MASSIVE interest in a sequel blog with the new stuff you mentioned (like STCO/Virgin, to name some). You asked to leave a comment if we'd like to see a sequel blog, so I did just that. :)

If you decide against making a sequel blog (which would be perfectly understandable), is it alright for me to ask if you could give me a rundown of the new Fleetway stuff you mention? I've been becoming increasingly interested in both this MU and in Sonic the Comic in general, and I'm really interested in the new stuff you say you found.

    Hoping you are well!
